Dynamic lighting has gone screwy

Recommended Posts

well the lighting looks very buggy' date=' like the images show..

maybe instead of trying to force an engine (and fail) to mimic real hdr

an more average lighting approach should be choose..

i honestly rather want to see bug fixed than lighting being toyed with..

a complete pitch black night where you can see absolutely nothing is in most cases very unrealistic..

again i don't see the point to force something into the game thats technically not (yet? arma3?) possible with it..

whats funny is that the guys in dayz wear basecaps which should also limit drastically how much the eyes need to dilate in different light situations..

i assume arma handles light via bounding boxes (indoor outdoor etc.) and its very finetuned in that department compared to other engines (check cryengine 3 e3 videos.. looks amazing)

anyway.. i would like to see a fix (or backroll) to the old settings

this this is surely not a the night is to dark thread.. but if this change will start pooping up the day is too dark threads something is going wrong.. (and lighting should be kept to lighting artists not coders *cough*)

[/quote']

It already has started to make an influence on that thread, yes. I'm afraid this thread will get shot down because of it, as it's becoming a duplicate at this rate :P

Still the issue is different. This thread is focused on the dynamic lighting being tweaked for the worse, and not specifically nights being dark (even though the dynamic lighting has a knock-on effect in regards to night darkness).

Yes, it's the "improved tone mapping" in the new beta build that we are seeing here, If rocket insists on ridiculously dark nights, then that's one thing. But, why insist on fucking up the daytime as well? And, more importantly, stop fucking up ARMA for the sake of DayZ. I don't understand how this mod is allowed to force its bullshit onto the base game.

Ugh, this is seriously fucking with my mind. Every time I see people saying it was the beta that caused this I go brain dead. Like I said earlier I had this problem before tone mapping was added. I can't test it 'cause I have no way of knowing what server has what mission file, or if it was a mission file or wtf...I did see that a couple people brought up that it did fuck with vanilla arma 2 as well. So it must've been a patch that caused it, but then why the fuck couldn't I change the settings the same day on patch 93616? When it was fine earlier that day? I NEED an answer (I'm dying over here)! Please if anyone can find this out FOR A FACT what has caused this and what can be changed (if anything) PLEASE post or some shit!

Witherfield what are you doing to take those screens? Reverting betas? Playing on non-beta servers? Do you know if those servers you played on, if you in fact reverted betas, have the most recent mission file? If I could just find a server running 93701 or 93666 that I knew didn't have the updated mission file that would be great! Damn. This is driving me nuts! lol...

Cheers, Witherfield.

Meh, damn! I read it, but still the changes didn't happen until:

[93654] Improved: Tone mapping

So why on 93616? Even though the one guy said it doesn't happen for him on 93616. Hehe.

It looks like people are posting some screens over there as well. Maybe they will notice the difference and change it back. I just hope they don't keep testing it over and over taking more time to get it correct or w/e...I wouldn't mind if we weren't forced to use the beta for the upcoming update, but we are...

Some guy did end up opening a CIT: https://dev-heaven.net/issues/32765 - I guess use that for now?

Damn this sucks. I was hoping it was on DayZ side so they can get feedback from here. I would think that it's possible to revert within the mission file though. Like with being able to disable channels within the mission file. So maybe that will be done before BIS changes it to something more pleasant. /shrug

Did anybody find a method to disable this "eye adaptation" mechanism? Example what I'm talking about:

I'm just back from playing some vanilla ARMA 2 and noticed how much worse this lighting/HDR/eye adaption effect is in DayZ. After digging a little bit, it looks like a DayZ "feature" related to the new tone mapping algorithms.

As of DayZ version 1.7.2.5 dayz_code/z/addons/dayz_code/init/compiles.sqf sets the tone mapping to:

"filmic" setToneMappingParams [0.07, 0.31, 0.23, 0.37, 0.011, 3.750, 6, 4]; setToneMapping "Filmic";

Compare this to the values recommended by BIS developer Dwarden in this post:

"filmic" setToneMappingParams [0.153, 0.357, 0.231, 0.1573, 0.011, 3.750, 6, 4]; setToneMapping "Filmic";

You can see examples of the three different settings on my Steam page and I'm also attaching histograms for the three images to this post. All screen shots were taken with gamma=1 and brightness=1.

Note that while default ARMA clips the highlights, it retains the most detail in the shadows. In contrast, DayZ keeps all of the highlights but almost completely obliterates the shadows. The Dwarden model seems to be a pretty good middle ground.

Although I've only tested it in this scene, I was able to improve the DayZ model, getting it a little closer to Dwarden's, by changing my video settings to gamma=1.2 and brightness=0.8. As a nice side-effect it also tones down the bloom.

I don't think this is an issue of the OP bitching about the night being too dark or anything, it's more of an issue that the lightning engine in this game is broken. I haven't been able to play in the daytime yet, but i'm wondering if that massive bloom spike problem is still in, I used to run into it a lot during the day time running through the woods, i'd be looking a certain direction and the brightness would just slowly ramp up until it looked like a nuke had gone off in the woods, then looking away it would go back to normal. At first I thought it was just the effect of looking at the sun, till I realized I was going down a hill and staring at dirt.

I get something similar to this 'bloom/nuke all the time, -but only emanating from the hanger area in the small southern airfield. Averting eyes from that does make it go away, but comes back when you look there. Restarting game completely sometimes cures this, otherwise switching servers does it. Running into an orange blob is a bit freaky.

i STILL have this issue as well.

this issue is making dayz really hard to play, its either too dark or to bright when you look at something specific.

like, if you look down on the floor, the contrast and brightness goes way up beyond realism.

adjusting the values and look back at the sky, and the contrast and brightness goes way down,

actually the problem here is dark days, not dark nights, lol

might as well ask, any solution to this be found meanwhile?

There's no such thing as pitch black above the surface. When you go caving the first thing you do is spend 20 minutes in the pitch black to get ur eyes accustomed to the dark. When you turn your headlight back on the difference is night and day on what you can see.

OMG I have to chime in here. Why are people seeming to be protecting this obvious flaw in Arma2's lighting engine. There is a fix out there for it but this issue has become like a twilight episode where to some people its reality and to others its bat shit crazy. There is no way that its realistic that I have to stare at ground for a few seconds for the screen to brighten at noon.I recall last night walking down this road at dusk and thinking it was time to find a new server and yet when I turned around it was suddenly bright daylight.I checked my watch and it was 1pm.Which reality was correct I wondered....

The answer is out there and if you seek you shall find....

Nah screw that...the A2 engined is flawed and I posted on this in past but nothing. Its been posted about on A2 forums also.Check this video that I posted awhile back where people were telling me it looks realistic!! Are these people covering up something? The music playing just adds to the Arma2 lore. :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGRFYzQW8gU

The truth is out there.......

Here is the fix as I wanna stop this insanity.DAMMMMMMM now I cant find the fix sorry. And I think this was the post that I had posted the fix to also. What the heck is going on here. The mod maker said it was an easy fix by just adjusting a few values.Ok after a 1/2 hour I found it again.Whats crazy is if this posts disappears also........ >:(

http://www.armaholic...age.php?id=6130

This is how it could look like if above fix is implemented.

The problem is that you were looking at the sun.

i am an absolute fan of realism, but this is just crap and makes the game unplayable in some situations.

the first video above shows what i mean, just that its wayyyyy more intense for me.

i know how the human eye adapts to incidence of light.

in this game however, i look down on the floor (my location doesn't really matter) or just zoom on anything in with right mouse button, and my view turns into something that looks like

my character suddenly went on a lsd trip. brightness and constrast goes up until it literally hurts my eyes, i am not kidding.

i look back up at the sun just shining through leaves, everything turns into a mere shadow.

if this is realistic, then maybe i should go see a doc, because something is very very odd with my eyes.

that is WITHOUT adjusting any values. now trying to fix anything on my side will make it even worse.

i have no idea if this might be a problem with my system, here goes:

i7 2600k

Asus EN6970 3GB

8GB RAM

Windows 7 64bit

and yea, everything is up-to-date.

why am i posting this now?

the problem existed before, somehow i used to just bear with it, but now i run a triple-monitor setup, and so i have to deal with the same problem, times 3.

i need a fix for this, badly.

@wolfstriked:

the idea to simulate eye adaption is not bad, these kind of mechanics actually impress me.

don't want this to be patched out, i would love if this could just be fixed:

a ) adaption goes way to fast

b ) the values applied are just mental (or make you go)

c ) adpation shouldn't go from complete brightness to complete darkness just out in the open field

i am sorry for the necro but this issue is still alive and well

the issue is not that the game is too bright or too dark but the fact that the dynamic contrast BS automatically levels brightness improperly. this is a serious problem wether it be normal eyesight or NVG since the smallest ammount of white pixels on the screen will cause an automatic adjustment making the terrain and trees completely black while all you can see is the sky and clouds. this also happens in morning and dusk where a player with even the smallest ammount of western sky visable will end up practically blind even if not looking directly at the sun. this dynamic contrast script needs to be removed completely because it simply is not working. it has nothing to do with wether or not the game is too bright or too dark it has everything to do with the fact that the lighting adjustments are unrealistic and cause graphical artifacts which seriously hinder gameplay in lowlight environments.

grow up stop trolling and fix the damn problem because you all know that this is broken

You might have more success if you go and rage on the official arma forum rather than a mod forum.
