Idea for ending Sniper abuse

Recommended Posts

So .50 caliber sniper I.E. As50 M107. Lets say you find one, well your a survivor and unless your character is either militarily trained, or a crazed gun enthusiast (which in my opinion probably would be one of the first kinds of people to get eaten since they'd go all guns a blazing and would probably get swarmed in a matter of seconds) then they probably don't know how to correctly hold/aim a gun of that size and power.

Well my suggestion is if you get one of these weapons you can shoot it all you want but you risk the chance after each shot of your character going into pain, and we already know that pain pills cure that pain.

There's a solution to this however and that would be to find a book (or something else maybe a manual to the weapon, a soldiers diary) that when read would allow your character to correctly hold the gun and fire more rounds successfully without going into pain. (I don't want it to be super rare but to find it you most likely should have to travel North towards the air field and check the military zombies/spawns along the way) I don't know what to do about Balota but its a suggestion you people figure it out.

Now before people complain for some reason I am suggesting this so if some Cod kiddie finds a dead survivor that went through the long and difficult process of finding the sniper, the cod kiddie wont be able to just pick up the murder machine and shoot everyone in a city.

Not a bad idea, although if implemented you should still be able to train yourself with it. Maybe after a certain amount of time survived with it and a certain number of shots fired your character starts to get the hang of it.

hmmm nice idea, but I think that the challenge should lie in the actual sniping process itself. Like having to account for wind direction and range of the target

But both Zeroing and bullet drop(I think at least) are already in this game. If they want to make a standalone they are going to make a serious engine to run it on. That takes time. Im sure Rocket will get something goin on.

On the other hand though this does sound like punishing people for their playstyle, I like the idea the guy above me had of simply making the actual shot the challenge.

I would say after a number of shots you start to get into pain.

Never going to happen, certainly not in the mod. Im curious though, no one I've ever hit with an M24 or DMR has ever survived (who hasn't alt-f4'ed, which is most people these days). First shot they collapse/pass out, follow up shot they die, if I haven't head shot them in the first place (or they run a few seconds and keel over). Do many people really recover after they have been hit with a "lesser" sniper rifle, I know I haven't.

While I really wouldn't mind if .50 snipers were removed from the standalone right now if someone chooses to snipe in the game and they aren't using a .50 they have to deal with a lot of people ducking out before they can get a proper kill. So for the time being I say leave them in. I know there's a lot of griefers around the city these days with hacked AS50 TWS's but with the game in the state its in do you really think any legitimate nerf on rockets end wouldn't be scripted around be the same people griefing the coast now (.50 causes pain, script unlimited pain pills etc)? Personally I would just like to see him fix duping and see battle eye get its game together with hackers which also might go along way to solving this "problem".

One more thing, seriously, just grab a can of beans and head north. I keep out of the coast citys and I rarely get sniped before I have a chance to acquire some military hardware myself (at least making it fair game) if they wont change it at least you can play around it.

Stopped reading right there.

So people who like guns but aren't military trained are crazy?

I agree. I would love a Sniper Elite V2esque sniping mechanic in DayZ. Not only is sniping in that game incredibly fun but it also takes a degree of know-how and skill. :)

Here's a solution.... make the gun handeling/mechanics realistic like the game/sim Reciever .To see how many shots left, you have to take the clip out, you have to go through each and every step you would in RL to load the weapon and fire it. Reciever can be found at wolfire games website.

If you know how to use a sniper rifle in Arma2/DayZ then so be it. People shouldent have to find a book on how to do something they already know.

There is basic training for a reason. I see where you're coming from, but sniper rifles do take knowledge and a bit of skill to use. Not to mention unless you have a range finder you'll have to use mill dot estimations. And not everyone knows how to do that.

My point is, the reason why people are getting sniped all the time is because of the number of hackers. From what I've been told, around 60% of the DayZ community are hackers or get their equipment from them. They do not teleport to everyone and kill them, but what they do is join a server with a bad battleeye protection, and spawn weapons for themselves, and others. Also half these hackers are dumbfucks themselves, they dont know how to play or use a weapon properly, quite often I'll find dead bodys with rare millitary weapons. Or kill some idiot running around in the open thats fully geared. Last night I found 4 dead bodys, (one of which was still standing up) that had L85A2 AWS'. Not so long ago I killed a bunch of fully geared noobs at kamyshovo. Who the hell runs around at spawn points thats got a L85A2 AWS?

What I'm trying to get to is that the problem is not the sniper rifle, and how overpowered it is. It is the number of people with them. And not for a moment am I complaining about the spawns, after playing for a couple months I have only found 2 AS50's at helicopter crash sites, otherwise I would have found atleast 20 off dead bodys and campingtents.

One of the main reasons the AS50 or M107 are at the top as they are, is because of the abundance of ammo while it really should be very low amounts of it. Low amount of bullets would mean that they select their targets more spesifically rather than just shooting fresh spawn characters or the few day old with barely anything worth the time or even risk. Aside from the obvious duping and hacking problems, there's also the problem of ammo refreshing back to full clip without you actually doing anything for it, giving your weapons substantially longer life time since you don't have to discard it. I'd rather have a AKM with ammo than a AS50 without any ammo at all.

While I'm not opposed to the idea, I'd caution that it's a slippery slope and that your proposal does target and nerf a specific playstyle which (IMHO) can be more easily balanced through making the weapons more rare versus game play nerfs.

What do I mean by slippery slope?

How many people actually know how to gut an animal and trim meat?

How many people actually know how to fly a helicopter?

How many people can actually perform a blood tranfusion? (In the woods with no supplies other than an unrefirgerated, probably useless blood bag, no less)

etc. etc.

Personally, I'm okay with some basic class system or achievment yielding perks system to differenciate players, make them better at the thingsthey like to do and not so good at others, and add in penalties for dying (having to start over on the achivement tree). But I know that's pretty unpopular so I don't harp on it too much.

Actually to a Player on foot, the M107 does exactly the same. Ruin your dayZ with one hit.

No you can like guns that fine i have my own but in my opinion if you own a .50 caliber sniper rifle your crazy for a good amount of reasons. There's no need to have it, you won't dare hunt with it. The only thing it's good for is killing, that's what it was designed to do.

I'd really like the weapon mechanic to be 'realed up' considerably; with even considerations like damage and maintanance. This would make using a weapon effectively an aquired in game skill
