Hunting; a revamp

Recommended Posts

Right now, hunting is not exactly awesome. Rabbits and chicken are ignored in favor of the bigger stuff because they drop less of the same.

So, either for the standalone, following a similar system, or for DayZ itself, hunting should be tiered into something else. Making big game easier to get, but less rewarding.

Rabbits should drop 1 Rabbit Meat, cooked into Cooked Rabbit; giving off a whooping 1000 blood.

For a total of 1000 blood per rabbits.

Chicken should drop 2 breast filets, cooked into Cooked Chicken; each giving off 400 blood.

For a total of 800 blood per chickens.

Goats should drop 2 Goat Steaks, cooked into Cooked Goat Steaks; each giving off 250 blood.

For a total of 500 blood per Goats.

Boars should drop 4 Swine Chops, cooked into Cooked Chops; each giving off 300 blood.

For a total of 1000 blood per boars.

Sheep should drop 4 Lamb steaks, cooked into Cooked Lamb Steaks; each giving off 350 blood.

For a total of 1400 blood per sheep.

Cows should drop 8 steaks, cooked into 8 Steaks; each giving off 200 blood.

For a total of 1600 blood per heads.

This would make rabbit hunting interesting and hunting in general interesting all the same. When was the last time you saw a rabbit and shot it? I hunt a bit, and rabbit is my favorite game. But in DayZ, they are barely worth a makarov bullet.

Leaving the bigger animals for the replenishing of the food meter over the replenishing of blood itself, per storage space.

And making smaller, more agile game, more rewarding per piece of meat.

Along with this, animals, maybe except cows, should be much more skittish.

Considering any pieces of meat would take as much space as the other, I'd say this is balanced enough.

I want to get into a deer stand, get my CS 550 and shoot a rabbit our of a bush.

Since we're gonna get dogs soon, how about they can go and get a rabbit or a chicken body and bring it back to you?

I would like for there to be more game animals - ones that are challenging to hunt, ones that will run (and not stop 10m later like the current animals) - eg DEER, ELK - something you can track and hunt down, to relive the tedium of trudging through the empty woods.

I like your idea of using the dog to help you hunt.

Yeah, woods are too empty.

Deer would be nice. Elks are only present in the far eastern side of Russian while deer are EVERYWHERE.

How about aggressive animals like bears and wolves?

Rabbits are fine as they are.

Boars just mostly ignore players. Make them a bit faster more skittish (better vision and hearing, running away from players along with vehicle and weapon sounds)

Goats can be skittish if left alone long enough.

Sheep might be spooked but most domesticated variants are, well, sheep.

The current 6400 blood per cow is a joke.

Totally agree on hunting needing a revamp. Some animals need to be faster and harder to hunt and some should be tougher to kill and more aggressive. Wild boar for example should put up a fight and be able to cause player damage/bleeding. Farm animals should be scarce, cows especially as they have high yield for no effort. There should be lots of deer in the woods but make them very and fast easily spooked. I would also love if there were different mushroom/fungi to eat with some giving somewhat negative side effects(but hey if you are starving to death you can't be choosy). Also as has been mentioned several times is the dangerous animals like bears and wolves. They should spawn when a player is bleeding or has hunted/is cooking meat or has meat in their inventory.

I think the wild animals should give more health than the cows, and farm animals.

It's far to easy to just walk up and bang a cow in the face, or a sheep or goat, or chicken, and yet they currently yield the best.

I think the boar, rabbit should yield the most, as well as being a lot harder to get close to, hunting them at the moment is a waste of time.

Not more, better.

Current quantities could be kept but we need something that brings the hunting of smaller and more agile animals to be more rewarding.

Of course, it would be ideal to change the behaviour of some of the beasts. Goats and lambs could be more skittish, boars definitely need a speed boost and much more easily spooked.

Rabbits are fine, on the other hand.

I like the idea of adding more to the hunting game, but, 1000 blood for a rabbit is a bit to high. I mean does it even have 1000 blood total? Plus I'm sure 99% of people would say a steak would be more filling then a rabbit.

IMO this could be balanced tho, if each meat cured a different amount of hunger and changed how fast it dropped. So rabbit being a lean as it is could add a boost so it doesn't drop as fast or something along that.

I'd love to see more of a variety of animals in the standalone. Maybe some dangerous animals?

I'd love to see bears above all. They'd be a high risk, high reward hunt.

i would love to have some hostile animals now and then, maybe wolfes could hunt in packs and flank players to attack on more sides, while bears should have a lot of hp. Also i guess in a world where live meat is so rare as opposed to dead meat, the wildlfe would be very hungry and prepared to venture much closer to the cities to hunt. There might be packs of stray dogs roaming the big cities.

if wildlife actually had an ai, this could create very interesting playere interaction dinamics.

If i'm running like hell through a wood i could scare small animals, birds could fly away frightened and give up my position to someone near by...

A boar can weigh two of you. And would rather knock you on your ass instead. tweak the numbers a bit. Rabbit is small and what little meat it has wont fill you up. A boar steak should give more health than a rabbit. Other than that i agree it should be a challenge. Edited by noobsmcgee

Is this some sort of funny DayZ math?

If the food/blood system was simply remade as something similar to Minecraft on PC (I haven't played it but bear with me)

You eat food to replenish hunger, when hunger is at or above a certain point (75%?), it refills your blood slowly (1 point per second, maybe quicker if you're fuller)

Running about and attacking or being attacked, basically every action + the passage of time, burns the hunger o'meter down.

Below a certain level of hunger (10%) you start to lose blood slowly, and continue to do so more and more until you eat something or die.

Different game would fill the hunger o'meter different quantities, and cause the calorie burn effect to take a longer depending on the last meal you had.

eg. Rabbit is high energy, allowing your hunger o'meter to last longer, but there's less meat on a rabbit so you would have to eat more to fill up.

Whereas porcine creatures (Boars) are more fatty, and would fill you up, but not for as long (like chinese food)

tl:dr - Food insta-healing is too old skool for an authentic apocalypse sim.

Healing takes time and rest.

Blood bags should be the main way of countering blood loss, Food has a digestive time and therefore the length of time for blood to be produced from meat and tines should be represented more reaslistic. Like Chadowski mentioned, blood will replenish itself but at the expense of ingestion of food.

Imagine as of now, you HAVE to rely on other players for a blood transfusion, that is a realistic way of doing things. Take the co-op transfusion away to DIY and you don't need animals nor tins for the most part (Dependant on players game pref')

No magic bunnies or animals are nessesary, If Rocket can have scientific advice on a virus, then as an ex officer I'm sure he can incorporate a more genuine way of replenishing blood just as he is with the injury system.

Yea I agree, you wouldn't want to make it too realistic because too much realism starts to become game breaking. I would say foods' main purpose should just be for hunger (obviously).

As the body would naturally replenish blood at X% in X amount time, food would just increase the rate your blood is naturally replenished by Y%.

blood should auto regenerate if you are:

well fed

hydrated

warm

not sick

eating an entire cow to immediatly recover from a bullet hole is a bit stupid. if you nearly die it should take time to recover. make you think twice about deathmatching in elektro.

If Rocket is going for a harsher survival feel then very slow blood regen only when fed would enhance the feel.Remove the blood loss when hunger icon is blinking and make eating a thing the players have to do to try to get as much blood back as possible before next encounter.Depends though on what type game Dayz will eventually become. If its just PVP fest than just leave it as is since you will be on low blood after surviving awhile and even makarovs will be deadly. This could very easily make people get so frustrated and suicide themselves when at low health.

As for hunting,I would get rid of the cows since they seem silly walking by a group of infected people who are starving.Keep rabbits and add in deer and moose. Also fix the boar animations so that when they spot you they take off like a banshee.I think there would be a very fun game in just hunting animals if they were hard to shoot and sensed when your around unless your very stealthy.

I like this, perhaps also add a status effect like slower or no running for hungry players so healthy players don't completely ignore food.

People can live an awfully long time without food and getting food should be relatively low on the list of priorities in most survival situations. It would also produce a more authentic response to being badly injured. Instead of just finding a cow to eat you would need to find a way to provide for your basic needs while hunkering down and healing up. Thinking along these same lines maybe blood bags wouldn't heal you instantly they would simply let you regenerate health more rapidly for a period of time.

Solo players could still recover from injuries but it would be much easier to recover if you're part of group that can take care of you.
