Bad Advice.

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm Gambles.

In my 2 months or so of this game I have been given three pieces of bad advice so frequently I actually began to follow them. They made the game boring (for me) and once I decided to stop playing the way I was told to play, and started playing the way the game in my opinion is suppose to be played it got better.

1st bad piece of advice "Don't get attached to your gear noob!".

Horrible advice, if there is one single bit of advice I can give you it is get attached to your gear. Love it, cherish it, never let it go, and get angry and sad when you lose it. Come to the forums and rant over a bug or bandit if you have to. Do not just brush it off as "oh well start again". When you get into the mentality of "I'm gunna die so I might as well get use to it" you start meta gaming, duping, and before you know it the game is a 220 km deathmatch map where everything you earn means nothing cause you just expect to die anyway. You're no longer playing to survive and thrive with your gear, you begin playing to get the stats up until your next death and you lose a lot of that rush you use to get when you actually cared about your gear.

Yes if you play like this you will get angry, sad, and frustrated. But you will also have a lot more motivation to play the game the way that it is most entertaining, like your life depends on it. Not as some gear grind where you horde gear because you know you're going to die anyway and just brush it off because you have "back up lootz".

2nd piece of bad advice "Play with a big group/clan!"

Every experience I have had with clans or large groups have been awful. I have yet to come across a clan that doesn't dupe or exploit the game in some manner. "Oh yeah you can have that gps just don't save the tent after taking it" yeah... "Why do we have 8 vehicles up here we never use?" "So other people can't get them" alrighty then. So the clan has every weapon in the game and some even not and most of the vehicles on the server. What do we do now? go kill players? the survival part of the game has been almost completely dismissed and it becomes a die and go back to camp fill up and kill or die more.

The best dayz I have had in dayz have been with small groups of friends playing to survive. Yeah if we die we have to scavenge again, we don't have a huge camp with duped stuff or 10 vehicles at our disposal but the game feels like it's difficult and it feels like these guys are my friends here to help eachother survive in this wasteland. Not guys who happen to be on the same TS counting the pixels making sure they are king of the mountain in some deathmatch extravaganza.

3rd piece of bad advice "Shoot first, ask questions later nub"

Unless you're a bandit this is horrible advice and you're missing out on soooo so many interesting experiences. Experiences of friendship, betraya, and adventure. Sure you are probably going to have to be very careful about how you approach people. You might even lose that precious gear you worked very hard for. But every so often you will meet someone in game who has the potential to be a friend. That to me is worth even more than the gear that you should care about.

Ultimately you are playing a game (hopefully) for enjoyment and not to make the game less enjoyable for others or crunch the numbers and make sure you get it all like some kind of bad competition. The only thing you should be fighting for is survival not hording the most vehicles and loot in the game with a huge group of guys who dominate a server and make it all trivial.

Anyhow, that's my advice to new players. I hope it helps you as it has me.

Edit: ( If any like minded survivors are looking for a guy they can count on when needed, check my profile for my Skype Name :). )

1st bad piece of advice "Don't get attached to your gear noob!".

3rd piece of bad advice "Shoot first, ask questions later nub"

1st: When people say don't get attached to your gear, they mean, "Be prepared to loose it. You can cherish it, you can love it, you can enjoy it. But be prepared to loose it do to dieing, glitches, etc.

3rd: If you want to keep that gear you might want to shoot first. You can take that risk. I did and someone saved my life. I saw a video where two guys that walked right next to a person ended saving him from a bandit.

I have played both ways and I have to say that both have pros and cons. Sure making new friends is fun, but so is sniping troublemakers from a far. Sure telling someone to run to you and you will help them then shooting them is fun, but so is saving someone running for their life. My point is I personally like to change my experience with every life. The only thing that remains the same is my looting path(depending on if i want military grade gear or if i want joe the hunters gear from his barn). I like your post though because there needs to be advocated for both sides of the coin.

I think that luckily the Nvidia fix fixed my gfx errors, so I should really start playing more.

Hello there

Good post.

"don't get attached to your loot" applies to the alpha nature/bugs/scripters.

In normal play protect it!

Too fucking true. Anyone who is in a large group and denies it is not only a liar, but an awful liar.

Gambles. I like the name. Reminds me walking into a city at night with a flashlight on.

1st bad piece of advice "Don't get attached to your gear noob!".

I'm only really attached to five pieces of gear: Hatchet. Hunting Knife. Water Bottle. Matches. Backpack. All in which I can find very easily half hour into the game at most.

2nd piece of bad advice "Play with a big group/clan!"

I can tell you right now that playing with big groups is a lot of fun if you know everyone in the group. It's even better when two groups run into each other and join forces. I've only had that happen once, and it was a biblical day. We went on a Cherno and Elektro raid. It was a finders keepers deal, but mostly everyone had the equipment they wanted and we did it just to shoot some zombies.

I have yet to come across a clan that doesn't dupe or exploit the game in some manner.

I will admit, exploiting glitches is kind of a buzz kill in a survival game. I will also admit that I'm guilty of the mag glitch. The ammo is just so common anyway, and I'm lazy enough to the point I don't want to mouse wheel to pick it up lol.

3rd piece of bad advice "Shoot first, ask questions later nub"

This is a terrible piece of advice. I've been playing this game since July and shooting first is a TERRIBLE idea. Most of the time, shooting first gets players and zombies attracted to you. Players that are worth their stones in the game will hear shots and run for the nearest building or tree line. I only shoot when it is absolutely necessary. Even when someone is shooting at me, I will rarely shoot back unless I turned the tables to my advantage somehow. Better to cut and run then be cut down.

Beans for 99% of your post.

PS: We are one of the few that have never exploited or even used a hacked in item.

That sounds odd given your clan tag is "H4X". Not saying you are just thought it was odd.

lol yeah. So here's the story of our tag. It started with my cousin and I when BF3 first came out. We are pretty good at the game and both of us on separate occasions were sent messages accusing us of hacking. So to be trolls we decided to make our clan tag H4X. Then it got worse because a few matches where we were on opposite sides but both at the top of the score board for our side with H4X as the tag. This became a running joke and now it is a set tag on all platforms for me and my clan. It is funny though seeing as this mod has a unique amount of hackers and well first thing people see when they rage is our tag :)

This, i agree 100%. Having feelings in this game increases the experience of it 100 fold. Although some people, when attached to their gear, refuse to go anywhere near cities and that may get boring after a while, it did for me. I thrive off the interactions of others. Just seeing somebody run 100m away is thrilling lol

The reason I say get attached to your gear and don't listen to people when they say not to is because it seems like players catch a lot of flak on here for being frustrated for losing gear. Which I think is a sign that people care about the game still. I don't wanna be around when the day comes that people stop complaining on forums about losing gear and telling there story. That just means that they either no longer care or have switched to duping or scripting.

And better experiences worth even more than gear can come from comunication in game which doesn't happen if you shoot on site :)

For me don't getting attached to gear means that when you get good gear, you start to play safe and start avoiding, because you don't want to lose it. Then you get rid of all those great experiences.

Well that is technically what it should mean I guess. But people use it on the forums to put others down or dismiss there stories. "Don't get attached to gear" is usually the first reply you see to someone who just wants to vent about how they were hunted down or died to an annoying bug.

I love it. I agree and disagree with #1, though.

I hate losing my gear, especially when I get a M4A3 CCO and then get mowed down by a chopper. But then again, I got so annoyed that I got more reckless when looting ciites, and then shortly after, I found reckless looting works....

Beans, though!

Sometimes it does indeed. But you should always care about your gear and never brush it off as "oh well". The game loses so much suspense like that, when you just don't care about losing it all.

#1 This was conceptualized to get people to shut the hell up on the forums. We can only take so much bitching. The point is to accept that, at any given time, you may lose everything you've worked hard to get. However, the point is not that you should take unnecessary risks. The goal of the game is to survive; it isn't to hold onto your gear for as long as possible. It just so happens that survival is usually associated with keeping your gear.

#2 Most large groups' goals are to kill. You can expect that they'd to things like that- after all, a large group is likely to kill more efficiently. Smaller groups, however, are more designed to survive.

#3 This goes hand in hand with #1, but the point isn't to kill everyone. The point of this advice is to kill any and all threats that present themselves. I don't actively hunt players, nor do I kill them on sight. But what if I feel as if they will threaten my survival? Well, that's the point where I start shooting. Bandit skins in major cities are obvious threats. Anyone running towards me is a threat. A noob with a hatchet running away from me into the nearest building is not a threat. The point here is to kill if you are worried about your survival. My philosophy is that my survival is more important to me than your survival. I won't hunt you, but I will shoot you in the skull if you make me sweat.
