cordleztoaster 5 Posted August 26, 2012 Having not played the game for sometime. I loaded it up for the first time in ages today.I'm really disappointed that you don't start with a gun.Having died so many times just trying to find a gun to defend my self against zombies and getting killed by bandits it hardly makes my 40mins of playing this game enjoyable. For someone starting out you certainly don't join on a level playing field.I more or less forced to server hop in order to get some gear happening. My 2c
Regicide 111 Posted August 26, 2012 I more or less forced to server hop in order to get some gear happening. This statement destroyed any validity the rest of your post had imo. Server hopping is just lame, regardless.I've spawned in w/o a weapon more time than I can count. It's not a big deal. Hatchets are everywhere. They will help you defend yourself until you find an Enfield/Winnie.
herrjon 478 Posted August 26, 2012 It takes less than 10 minutes to get to a deerstand or barn, or any high level residential or military spawn from basically any spawn point. If the closest one doesn't pan out, go to the next one. It's not that difficult.

CerebralZombie (DayZ) 151 Posted August 26, 2012 After time you will learn to enjoy it. Every time you die you get better at finding/gathering loot, getting around zombies, and being stealthy from other players. It's really what the game is about, since once you have great gear you seem to get timid from fire fights, and than bam! Shot out of nowhere~ So it's better to just not get attached to your character!
CerebralZombie (DayZ) 151 Posted August 26, 2012 Also if you join a server with alot of players online you can just walk into Elektro and find a ton of dead bodies with every tool, and great gear/weaponry. You risk dying, but at least you don't spend days getting good loot, than end up dying to get pissed off. That way the gear doesn't really matter and you can go around fighting banditos.

cordleztoaster 5 Posted August 26, 2012 Is this meant to be as close as possible to a simulator?
ThuggleS 45 Posted August 26, 2012 I felt the same way at first, but I quickly adapted. My strategy on spawn:1) Sprint to closest town/city.2) Find large warehouse/barn with 2+ doors.3) Grab one of the many axes that are usually on the floor, and possibly gun.4) Run around the town/city and gear up - for buildings with only 1 door, run around corners/fences/buildings to get zombies off your ass, then crouch/crawl to your destination.Once you learn how to deal with the zombies you can just sprint into a town and gear up with the basics. ThuggleS 45 Posted August 26, 2012 (edited) Is this meant to be as close as possible to a simulator?Well the Arma2 engine is a military simulator (used by and for the military)...so, yes :DAnd, with the more realistic and somewhat unforgiving medical mods in DayZ...yup. ktabz 9 Posted August 26, 2012 (edited) seriously it's very rare for me to go without a decent weapon, bag and survival gear (mathches, hatchet, hunting knife) for more than 5-10 minutes, just need to know where to go.if you get a kamenka spawn, go north, 3 deerstands along the road and then the zelenegorsk grocery store. kamarovo/balota/cherno/prigidorsky spawn, balota airfield, cherno grocery, firehouse, apartments and pubs. cap golova, electro, drakon, krutoy cap = electro raid (stay out of sight from the hills). anything north of that you should follow the coast north to berezino.the only thing you would miss with any of those spawns is medical supplies with the kamenka spawn.geared in 10 minutes or less. FrankFisher 46 Posted August 26, 2012 Ok.. if anything its too easy to find weapons when you first spawn in.
morgan32 403 Posted August 26, 2012 Spawning without a gun in this mod is the least of your problems. It is piss easy to find something to survive with, I mean, the zombies are so stupid that you don't even need a gun to survive against them.

MonkeyBiz 7 Posted August 26, 2012 Hatchets are for zombies, guns are for humans. Find a hatchet first. If anything your problem is that you are new to the game, and you are trying to run and gun. You have to play it more like the first level of Metal Gear Solid.
jakeo10 9 Posted August 26, 2012 Trees and Bushes are your friends. Weave in and out, line of sight is broken and zombies go their separate ways.

jurrasstoil (DayZ) 12 Posted August 26, 2012 Learn the game mechanics of zombies. What attracts them, how their line of sight works and especially how you can lose them. Once you figured that out you'll kill zombies out of convinience and not because you have to. Zombie between you and precious loot and it takes him ages to move out of the way? Pop one in his head or give him a good old hatchet face-treatment.Barns offer enough space and exits to make you not care about the zombies that are after you, run in, grab what you need, run out. You'll usually find a hatchet or even a gun/rifle after one or two barns and a ton of other useful stuff in the process. Almost the same goes for industrial buildings. That should get you decently geared up to loot residential buildings for stuff like handguns, better backpacks, food/drinks and toolbelt items. Then you can move on to deerstands and maybe even stary.Probably the safest and quickest way to get okay gear.
