So far I'm finding this game is what you make of it. It is possible to survive almost indefinitely once you acquire basic survival tools: A hatchet for firewood, matches, a hunting knife, and a canteen or three. You can live out in the trees forever, never encountering a single zombie or other player. Just hunt livestock for food and find a pond (online maps help) for water.

But that would be hella-boring, so I wind up going into town to find toys, and getting shot at. I'm not down to join the QQ Patrol regarding bandits, but they do frustrate me. The virtual nature of things makes their blind aggression unrealistic, imho. It's a whole lot easier to shoot an anonymous avatar on the internet than it is to kill a human being in cold blood, and I do not think there would be quite as much aggression in a real survival situation.

But, when they kill me I usually have the basics (axe, knife, water, matches) within a matter of an hour anyway, so whatev :D Don't get attached to your stuff, right? :3

Easy: find knife, hatchet, matches, canteen = unlimited survival. There are some really scenic places up north to live and you'll even get the occasional visitor that will never see you. With a tent, toolbox, tank traps, some barbwire, entrenchment tool, and sandbags (are the last two even in regular dayz?) you can setup a nice base in the hills that will be pretty hard to attack without ghosting through it on another server.

I have several spots picked out for when underground bunkers become a reality.

You survive by not playing.

Seriously?

You survive by doing basic hunting missions about an hour or two everyday and hope you stock pile on food enough.

Survival really is boring though because you can't do anything with it.

Get a canteen, hunting knife, matches and a hatchet and enjoy your camping sim in the woods. That's how to survive in DayZ. If you wanna play the game like that by all means it is your time. I die all the time in DayZ/Lingor and I wouldn't have it any other way!! So many el oh els from so many different deaths it have lost track!

It is quite easy to survive indefinitely once you find the quite rare matches, but it gets pretty dull.

I used to get the basics then hit a deer stand or 5. You should then be pretty kitted up especially if you happen to come across a heli crash.

The problem then is - what now?

That's why now i just hang around the cities for a bit more action.

PHASE 1 - SURVIVE:

1. Learn how to deal with zombies. In general, how to deal with them WITHOUT firing a shot, f.e. by learning how to sneak past them and loose those few who refuse ignoring you.

2. Team up with at least 1 person. Over course of time, you WILL loose blood and more often then not you will not have the storage to carry 50 flesh for blood-regeneration. As well, running around with multiple people reduces the chance of being onehit-incapped.

PHASE 2 - GEAR UP:

3. Start looking for a vehicle/tent. No matter the size of your group and your backpack, you cannot properly store gear without a real storage.

4. Start gathering enough food, water and medical supplies and probably some spare weapons.

5. Get a real group together.

PHASE 3 - CHANGE THE WORLD:

6. With the necessary troops and supplies, do as you please. Help spawnies, clear towns, hunt bandits... whatever.

Find a Heli Crash Site, find an L85 with SD rounds. Thermal, great even at longer ranges, and most importantly Inaudible after 75m to players and completely silent to zombies at any range. Most OP way of solving all problems.

How does one find a ghillie suit?

Last time i died i respawned near kamenka. Got in the big orange house and found a makarov and some supplies. Went to the black log house up the hill and found a ghillie. Still wearing it, don't have the makarov since a while ago.

so keep on hitting civilian houses/apartments (and military apparently, i found all i've got in civilian buildings) and it will appear.

And for matches best places are supermarkets.
