Being a hero versus being a bandit

Recommended Posts

Well, I had one of those "crossroads" moments in DAYZ today, and Im thankful that I chose the path of good. I was scavenging near some abandoned hangars and noticed another survivor standing in a copse of trees to the rear of one of the hangars. This dude appeared to be loaded, with at the very least some kind of sweet sniper rifle slung on his back. After waiting for a few seconds, I noticed no movement. I crept right up behind him and still no movement. I decided that he was afk.

Now, I could have wasted him right there and taken his stuff, but I didnt. I guess I feel like survivors need to watch out for each other rather than kill each other for supplies that could fairly easily be scavenged peacefully.

Does anyone have a similar story to share?

I guess he's just lucky it wasn't me behind him. I would have dropped the sh*t outta him and taken everything :)

Being a Hero takes skill and common sense, knowing who to avoid, where to avoid, and how to approach people. Being a bandit takes a gun, bullets, and no empathy, only selfishness.

Usually, if someone is hesitante about responding to direct comms on whether they are friendly or not, they're not and should be avoided.

Unarmed guy apporached me in barn chased by couple zeds.

I had hatchet and there was another one in room (long barns have small rooms).

When i was fighting off zombies i told guy with my funny English on mic to pick up hatchet instead of slashing him on spot.

He armed himself and ran off.

Im pretty sure he did not respond because he was laughing hard at my accent.

I hope he's fine by the way ;D

Lets face it, if your going to try and call people on a video game selfish, cowards and people without empathy just because they kill other survivors for gear and supplies then you shouldn't be playing. DayZ isn't CareBear land and the ONLY people you should trust is friends or a group that you've been with for awhile other than that its shoot on sight in my books and thanks for the gear. Its your own fault for not being cautious and watching your surroundings and get nailed in the face by an AS50 round.

Nonsense.

This game is trying to be exactly not what you are playing, the whole point of this game is that you have the choice to interact with people.

While I do not condemn people choosing to be bandits, this kind of approach, the "trust your irl friends only" is plain stupid, go play something else, this is the apocalypse, you're friends are supposed to be dead,or at least lost.

you're looking for a good shooter? arma 2 has plenty to offer, and the mods for this kind of play style are abundant, there is no shame in liking different styles.

Somehow I hope that standalone would ban using anykind of communication other than the game's, it just destroys the atmosphere.

My son and I were by one of the castles when i encountered another player. I ask if he was freind or foe and didnt get a reply. noticed all he had was an axe so we didnt waste him. He finally got in the right chat channel and told us he needed blood and food then passed out from blood loss. we gave him a transfusion and some food and headed off.

Was a very intense moment that ended well and thats why we like the game. The tension with player encounters is awsome, but getting sniped from some prick hiding in the woods is cheap. I hope when the zombies come they eat your brains first!

+1

It also takes discipline & restraint.

Makes for much more interesting gameplay too.

So, being cautious is shooting unarmed survivors for painkillers and a flashlight? Oh, or is it shooting a guy from 800m away because he is a threat somehow? Or maybe its camping the airfield and killing anyone who comes, because you are being cautious? Yeah, sounds like bullshit.

If you're trying to argue that bandits are survivors killing other survivors for gear, then you need to play DayZ, because you are very wrong.

While I feel that anarchy is certainly an element in a apocalypse, outright murder against someone who poses little or no threat is ridiculous. First rule of combat: Strength in Numbers.

Second Rule: Watch your ASS

I was in the Elektro firehouse trying to find something decent to arm myself with so I could venture into the woods and happened upon two survivors AFK on the roof. One had an Enfield and a bigger pack of some sort, and the other had an ALICE pack and a Kobra. I was behind them with the revolver and could've dropped at least one before the second had time to find me and begin engagement.

I also would have had enough time to climb the ladder and steal their weapons.

I neither engaged nor stole. I warned them that they were in a precarious position, that there were dangerous elements in the town who'd killed me once before. They disconnected.

I will never steal from anyone. I will never shoot a man in the back unless he shot me previously. I will never shoot unless someone initiates force. I will always try to help anyone, regardless of skin or weaponry.

After getting somewhat bored of my current life (76 days and counting), and spending numerous in-game hours player watching for amusement I have now created my own mini game and taken to providing anonymous overwatch for unarmed players or those who seem to be just carrying basic weaponry if they manage to get themselves into trouble with Zeds. I usually setup in a tree-line overlooking one of the small villages or towns such as Shakhovka, Dolina etc. work out all my ranges, plan an escape route incase somebody unsavoury turns up and just wait it out. It's not unusual to see two or three survivors pass through looking for loot in as many hours. If they happen to draw agro I simply attempt to kill any Zeds that get near them. Usually after the first sniper shot rings out or they notice zombies dropping near them they mostly just leg it. But I have had a few that have just gone prone and let me clean up around them, although most likely out of the fear that they think I'm a bandit or something. After helping a survivor and trying to remain unseen I wait until he has left the area, then relocate to a new position or town/village.

I do not enjoy PvP, have zero murders and no bandit kills but have a full compliment of end-game gear. This was the only way I could think of of having a use for it (apart from if engaged by hostiles) but yet refrain from killing players.

I'm sorry for the way you think, no game will EVER forbid communication. This simply can't be done, and why would they do it? Because a dozen *hardcore brave internet men* thinks this is real life and *carebears* should learn how to play like men?

People need to understand that in the end of the day, this is just a game. We play games to have fun, specially when we have our friends with us to share the experience.

Fortran.... how about Algol?

Nice post. I think I may follow your lead on this one.

I understand what you are saying to a point... but the mentality propagated by calling those who try to help others "carebears" is ridiculous. The real problem is the "jerkoffs" seem to outweigh the "carebears" by a large margin, making it a challenge to enjoy the game sometimes. Maybe in the future there will be some nice perks earned by HELPING and not harming folks. I for one, if stuck in an apocalypse such as this, would prefer human company to zombies any day.

A guy was running around near Solnichiniy, and I spotted him. He seemingly spotted me as well, and seemed very nervous. After saluting him multiple times, he slowly walked over. He was unarmed, new to the game, and to this life. Turns out he was trying to find his way to a friend. After a bit of communication with his friend, I decide to try and escort him to the meeting point, Staroye. Along the way, I gave him a pepsi, cooked meat, found him a hatchet and gave him my M1911 with 2 mags. He ended out falling down the stairs and breaking his legs in a barn xD But I was still glad to try and help

I broke a man's legs to keep him from killing me. Fortunately he had the means to safely acquire entry into the nearby hospitable so I didn't have to follow up with medicinal aid. Now that skins have been re-implimented however, I don't think I will have to spare any Bandits since it will be much easier to determine their lack of innocence.

This has nothing to do with hardcore men or carebears, I did not promote being a "hero" or a bandit.

And I am certently not a hardcore gamer, I usually play on the easiest settings in a game :P

It just seems to me that this game is not ment to be played with outside communications, not becuase its harder that way, becuase it just seems, at least to me, better and more fun.

I just think there are games more suitable for the style you are playing in dayz, not a fact, just an opinion.

We should team up sometime. I've been doing the exact same thing. Most times when they hear sniper rounds going off they as you said either high tail it out of there or hit the deck. Just this afternoon way out in the NW I helped out a guy and he took off for the hills, Now being I'm out in the middle of nowhere decided to follow him for something to do. About 45 minutes later we hit another village and bam I start taking out zeds, The guy never said anything but I could almost hear him thinking WTF? Makes my day :)
