daspope 146 Posted August 20, 2012 For the past few years I have been running intel chips exclusively after having been a long time AMD "fan boy".but now I want to revive my old desktop to play DayZ on, my laptop has an intel i7 and 16GB ram which is awesome for my work, but it leaves a lot to be desired in the gfx department.since my Desktop has an old Core2 Duo Socket LGA775 and Asus Mobo that is limited to 4GB Ram and a GeForce 8400 it will run DayZ but not as good as my laptop...Since I don't want to break the bank reviving an old desktop I was using as an in home dev server just to play games on... I am looking back to AMD for the much better pricing.I was looking at replacing the Mobo/CPU first, then the GFX Card, then maxing out the ram in a 3 step process.CPU I was looking at is the AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+I was thinking about pairing it up with the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX AM3+ Mobothen a couple weeks after getting a new gfx card Type TBDthen lastly pumping 32GB Ram in it.Not really gonna worry about an SSD, I dont mind waiting the 45 seconds or so for Windows to load lol.I figured I would get an aftermarket heatsink and OC the cpu to 4.0Ghz to 4.6Ghz depending on what temps I can keep it at.its hard to beat $160 for an 8 core cpu, Just wondering if anyone is running it and what I can expect from it. Blindingsun 233 Posted August 20, 2012 go intel for CPU.. and there's NO benefit in getting an 8core processor for gaming over a quad..that's more for things like 3d studio max and video work.intel destroys amd price to price

I may have to look at getting an i5 sandy bridge, just ~$50 more

Digital (DayZ) 2 Posted August 20, 2012 (edited) Do some research on windows 8 and how it will utilize the 8 core structure then make your choice. I bought the first 8 core fx when it launched with that in mind.Actually I assembled pretty much the exact same rig they used to break the world record with. daspope 146 Posted August 20, 2012 Windows8 is the reason business's won't be upgrading.Seriously, I will Switch over to full time Linux or OSX or both before putting up with an interface geared towards making all devices (phone/tablet/pc) have the same interface. daspope 146 Posted August 20, 2012 Good points made. Still not sure what I will end up doing, because when I am not gaming I will be running VM's (usually 3 at once), compiling code on dif platforms, some minor video editing here and there also. Additionally some 3d work, mapping for CryEngine 3 and Torque 3D and maybe some 3d modeling here and there, but I am a coder so my art skills are "blah" at best and just used as concept work. Cap'n (DayZ) 1827 Posted May 30, 2013 I've got an 8350 and I'm proud. Paired with a decent GPU(7950), I max the game! And I'm kind of tired of people telling me my computer sucks and I should give in to the man and become a follower of Nvidia and Intel...no thanks!
Cap'n (DayZ) 1827 Posted May 30, 2013 THIS THIS AND THIS.If you have to get an AM3 one, go for Quad. There are THREE decent quad core AMD's I can mention. The Phenom II X4 965, FX 4300, and the FX 4350. The 965 and 4300 have very similar benchmarks, while the 4350 is a bit ahead of both of them.
