Thermal vision. Does it belong in this game?

Recommended Posts

I think for thermal, NV, flashlights, and anything else that requires batteries should die after extended use. When you pick it up it has batteries that are at different % of charge then you have to track down batteries if you want to continue to use them.

I fully expect this in the stand alone version, along with weapon, vehicle and structure maintenance. Hell, even a hatchet needs to be sharpened once in awhile to remain effective.

I think that people want a counter for it, and not a equivalent.. I mean paper doesn't counter paper.

Now I'm not gonna say thermal scopes need a counter, but I do think it wouldn't be bad if we toss around the idea of a way to mask your thermal signature, or even having leaves make it less intense at range.

Stay out of the open areas in crowded places. That's the counter. :D

Get behind walls etc.

Thermal is OP as phuck and should definitely be removed from the game. It requires absolutely no skill to use. Just 360 degree scan your environment and see people all over the place 1000 meters off. There is nothing to counter it. Either you have it and are at a complete advantage or you don't have it and you're phucked. It's literally impossible to play at night without it.

If it's allowed to stay in the game then the L85 should be much more common and be able to spawn in the barracks. For people to have the magical advantage of thermal vision simply because they were lucky enough to stumble upon a heli crash site where it spawned is silly.

while I agree, and you should be completely visiable in the open, however having your body heat show through some thin walls and brush makes sense but it would also not be as bright as it would be out in the open.

I also think vehicle heat signatures should fade away after a while if the engine has been shut off.

I loved the degradation in System Shock 2. In fact, that's one of my favorite games of all time. It was a thrill finding one of those Leatherman multitools and knowing I could keep my pimped out shotgun going for a little longer.

Weapon degradation forces players to make choices. Choices are good to force players to make. This has long been documented that EVERYBODY loves choices.

Do you pick up that fancy, finicky M4A1 CCO SD that will break down as soon as it rains, or do you stick with a trusty AK-74 that will keep running forever? Is the advantage of a "better" gun worth the hassle of extra care and maintenance? Do you like the 'never fail' simplicity of the revolver, or do you not mind having to keep the silencer on your M9 cleaned and tuned?

These are questions that soldiers in the real world have to deal with. Unlike the soldiers in the real world, in DayZ the choice is left up to the player. Every weapon has its good sides and bad sides, not just in the areas of accuracy and power, and with weapon reliability and maintenance that could be well reflected in the game.

Ask anyone who used one in combat and they'll tell you what a piece of crap the M16 is. That why there have been so many successive 'improvements' made to it. Yet in DayZ it works just as reliably as a Kalishnikov and hits harder too. That's just not correct.

On topic: Thermal is fine as long as it's attached to a gun that can't snipe. The problem is people carrying the L86 just for the thermal, then pulling their 35lb, 5 foot long AS50 out of their backpack for the shooting.

Excellent points all.

A realistic encumbrance model needs to be implemented as it will force many critical decisions that will directly impact gameplay and combat effectiveness.

These AS50 wielding tools that can stuff another full sized primary into their "pack" with all relevant ammo as well as a sidearm with many clips and still maintain combat effectiveness are completely ridiculous.

A little dose of realism is the cure for this junk.

Hopefully the standalone addresses this among many other things.

The key is the devs need to fix tent duping, then wipe all servers. Because right now people have tents stashed all over the place with L85s in them and they refill with every server restart. So, they are meant to be

Again something that would be mostly fixed by preventing the rampant hacking/duping goin on in game right now.

Thermal in group-play is insanely effective, that's fine though; there is no need for minor or even moderate PvP balance. It adds an extra layer of risk and expands spotting potential, and counters bush wookies effectively.

Something as extreme as the AS50 TWS is an abomination and shouldn't be available, but the L85 is a terrible assault rifle and on top of that it's extremely rare (despite all the duping, it's still not as common as most people make it out to be).

The bottom line is that it's rare weapon that shines in a squad environment, and will most of the time be used in encounters of experienced people.

If it was as rare as intended, I'd say it suits just fine. With dupes however, that's just not the case.

Far more people have them than they should. It is a MASSIVE game changer in team fights. One that should be scarce instead of the standard.

Other than changing team fights into thermal vs thermal, they exist to confirm that DayZ zombies are still warm blooded, likely meaning they're of the infected variety rather than undead.

Just imagine that is the L85, and if you don't like it, then DONT FUCKING LOOK AT IT! :)

Edit: I have had the privilege of having 3 non-duped L85s over the course of my experiences in DayZ. I love them as they create a sense of dread in the game; you never know where they are or how many have one. It is the only thing that gives SVD Camo+ghillie people nightmares when sniping Cherno/Elektro/Stary. As unbalanced as it is, it balances the overall game very nicely, as it gives pause to anyone without one.

They can either completely balance the game and fuck it up or try to make some of things more realistic and in real life things are not as balanced as in most games so yes the thermal deservers to be in just as much as anything else in the game (that is a feature).

It was mine too. However it pissed me off that in the future they make all their weapons out of balsa wood and pritt stick.

thermal is broken, i don't see how it's even an argument. daytime, nighttime, it doesn't matter, it just makes spotting people SO much easier. i wouldnt mind at all if it was removed.

I would agree with you about the L85 needing to be removed, if it didn't spray like a mental patient with rabies. It's probably because I suck at shooting, but I had an L85 yesterday and fired at someone 20 meters away from me several time. Fuck knows where the bullets went but none of them hit. So yes, I basically consider it as just a thermal scope mounted on a rather large handle.
