People who play 3rd person

Recommended Posts

I've seen lots of people complaining about servers that remove 3rd person view.

I just wanted to mention a couple things that might help people use 1st person better. Who knows, you might actually start to like it and switch over to 3dp:off servers, since there's no looking over objects in first.

-Turn off head bob (options>game options) I see people complain that they get motion sick if they play in first person, turning off head bob will prevent that.

It was the first thing I did after installing ArmA2. Not sure who made the brain dead decision to make it default.

lol what exploit? 3rd person is not an exploit. Its actually part of the engine and all of the games the engine supports for over 10 years now. Like I said, I dont care either way but BIS is not going to remove 3rd person from their games because some dayz noob that never gave a shit about their games before wants it to be a FPS game.

The same can be said about removing client side scripting. They won't remove that just because DayZ has a serious hacker problem.

I only play on hardcore servers where all you have to wipe with is sandpaper.

Get on my level.

Real hardcore is to play 1st person-only on servers that allow all the cheats, I mean options. :)

3rd person for not shooting.

1st person for shooting.

Have I boiled the blood in your veins yet?

I like 3rd person because I want to see my character

maybe if you could see your character in 3D when opening the inventory...

In Dayz you can break your legs falling 10 ft and die if you don't drink enough water. Being able to see around walls clearly isn't in keeping with the same spirit

Most people don't hold a negative view of 1st person view as hardly anybody encourages people to use it. The fact is, if 3rd person is available and you arn't using it, you're putting yourself at a large disadvantage in terms of concealment and negotiating your surroundings.

HOWEVER, I do enjoy 1st person a lot when these disadvantages are mutual. It's certainly more immersive hearing everything directly through your characters ears, risking your neck to look around a corner, sitting blind in tall grass. All the uncertainty thats spawned from removing such a large crutch really helps the mod achieve the goals it set out to originally accomplish. Risks must be assessed more throughly across the board and with that comes fear and pressure.

Sometimes, when I make a fresh restart, I just want to take my new character for a ride through purely 1st person servers. The best early-game thrill you can get is crawling through tall grass without a weapon. You'll stand out like a sore thumb to other players while crawlers and hoppers won't be visible until they're right up in your face. Will you pop your head up and get a better look?

I've been meaning to order a track IR system, I think it will really improve the first person view, not to mention immersion. For people unfamiliar...

Really helps, thanks for this. I usually don't use first person mode but with this, I will start to use it.

3rd is Great !!

It allows me to see over objects I would not be able to IRL.

It lets me look around corners without leaning.

I can see from inside a dense bush while remaining hidden.

I can use it to glitch the magical camera through walls.

and best of all it lets me look at my barbie doll to see the clothes using my magical camera that follows me over my shoulder !!!

3rd is so much more realistic I don't know why everyone doesn't use it. Instead of the silly option of turning your head left or right in 1st person.

FP has it's uses. It's even perfect for some types of games like CoD or Halo. It's not perfect for this game. Everyone can use it so I don't see why so many people hate on it.

Hurry up and adapt. It's not going anywhere.

Even most the "vet servers" have both 3rd person AND crosshairs on.

truesay. something isnt right with DayzCommander either, when it comes to the filters. i have 3dp off and ch off but it will still list servers which when i get in there have CH or 3dp.. which is annoying. These servers usually say VET, rather than specifically 3DP OFF CH OFF. nowadays i only play on servers with that shit in the servername

Have at me. Come on now, don't shy away from a debate.

Name a game that requires stealth and tactics that forces a players to play in first person.

I travel in third person and shoot in first. I've always found third person more comfortable, but I read all these forum posts saying the FOV isn't much different between first and third, so why is it more comfortable to me?

I think it has to do with disorientation. In first person, I'm not exactly sure what my character's position is relative to his surroundings. The view feels off because I'm not sure of exactly where I am. I know I'm not explaining this very well, but first person in this game feels very counter-intuitive to me. In third person I can move and navigate much more comfortably and instinctively. In first person I am very aware of the interface and constantly trying to locate myself relative to my surroundings, while in third person I know exactly where I am and thus can focus on moving.

Honestly, you can turn off everything else on your server and I'm fine with it. I've never even used waypoints, in fact I didn't even know about them until I read a forum post debating them last week. Crosshairs make it a little easier to interact with objects, but I never use them for shooting, so I can work without them. Nametags are just silly.

But if you lock me into first person view in this game, it's disorienting and just feels wrong. It's unpleasant, and makes me more, not less, aware that I'm playing a game.

I use it just to see over objects that you cant see over with first person.

Its also good to have your magic camera look around corners for you while hidden from view.

I mean why lean round a corner when your magic camera keeps you hidden...

I think all soldiers should carry a magical floating camera so they don't expose themselves to danger.

-Double tap (-) on numpad when indoors. First person by default is a little zoomed in, which is great for seeing distance outdoors. But indoors it feels like you're bumping into the walls constantly. So double tapping the - key zooms it back out and gives you a larger field of view. And for some reason I don't have as much problem moving about inside buildings.

-Crank up the aiming deadzone (options>game options) This might not be for everyone, but I enjoy playing with the deadzone at its highest most of the time. This means the crosshair can move around the center of your screen without your body moving with it. It's great with a flashlight, or when you're trying to hide while keeping your aim on something.

-Hold left Alt key for freelook (or double tap to toggle) - I'm sure most people know this, but it's worth mentioning for newer players.

Hope this was helpful to someone.

Beans give for helpful, constructive post, unlike some of the replies to your thread, sadly

I'll always be a third person player, because I do get motion sick, and not from the head bob (which I've already turned off.) Well, not just from the head bob. Fact is, and perhaps it's just the way my eyes are, I need something still and constant on the screen that I can focus on, otherwise I get motion sick, and unfortunately, when you run in Arma 2, your weapon drops out of sight, leaving the entire screen almost entirely empty of anything not moving, which then gives me motion sickness.

That's the reason I travel and maneuver in 3rd person, so I don't have to go throw up every 20 minutes, however I will say, for actual combat, it's 1st person, ADS, all the way, trying to aim "Over the shoulder" or "From the hip" just feels unnatural to me.

Bad_Mojo.

You might want to add the FOV guide to your OP?

Field of View:

wildcard__ from reddit.com/r/dayz

Quote

1) Go to My Documents/ArmA 2/ and open up USERNAME.ArmA2OAProfile in notepad. Scroll to the very bottom and you'll see two values, fovTop and fovLeft.

2) Calculate what vertical FoV corresponds to your desired horizontal FoV using this calculator. Make sure the "resolution" information is correct!

3) Take that number, go to Google, and search "X degrees in radians" to convert it. It should be a small number, between .5 and 1.5 in all likelihood. Round it off at the hundredths - I hear ArmA will chop off any digits after that anyway.

4) Enter that value as fovTop in notepad.

5) Using a calculator, divide that number by the second number in your aspect ratio - in my case, 16:10, so I divide it by 10. Then multiply it by the first number, in my case 16. Now enter that number for fovLeft, and round it the same way (leaving only 2 digits after the decimal point).

munkey505 from reddit.com/r/dayz

For the lazy:

Using 90 degrees on the below resolutions

1920 x 1080 at 90 FOV =

fovTop=1.03;

fovLeft=1.83;

1680 x 1050 at 90 FOV =

fovTop=1.13;

fovLeft=1.80;
