What would you like to see in the stand alone?

I do really like the tool system but I do not think it is the same as the perks, but could work along side it.

Perk

- could be a single item or bonus that each player recieves at spawn.

-Either randomly generated or selected by the player.

- Will not limit the player to a role or class, but rather give them a bonus that would be benefitial to the group, or themself.

- Bonus could be a extra 'tool' at spawn, like a lock pick, or more bandaids, that would move them toward building specific toolkits.

- Perks can branch into two different areas depending on the players humaninity, mostly rewarding them for choosing either path.

-Low humanity will give bonuses that only help you, and not a group, playing off of your own selfish nature as a bandit.

-High humanity will give a bonus to help a group, reflecting how you have made it this far as a team player.

Ok, you've sold me. I'll put it in the OP. As usual if anyone wants it taken out, vote it down and give reasons.

Growing Beards. (Has been mentioned in other threads and by Rocket himself)

2, 3, and 4 number combination locks.

The portion concerning random wilderness drops is in there, I guess it's kind of obscure maybe. I believe it's in the bit about events and the like. Adding beards to the OP as well as 2, 3 and 4 number combo locks.

locks? so a player could search for camps, find one, and not be rewarded at all? sounds bad to me, sry

I'm going to try to respond to a few people at once here so forgive me if things get a little cluttered. Zombo, if you found a camp that wouldn't necessarily be the case. Like Baz said, the person who set up the camps would have to have found the locks to begin with. Locks should be fairly rare, somewhere along the lines of antibiotics. Locking up a tent would not be possible because, like you stated Zombo, you would just tear it to shreds. That said, the player would also have to find strong boxes and such as detailed in the "more world alteration" portion when mentioning storage to put inside of your base.

I think that buildings and cars might be spawned locked, randomly and rarely.

Adding this to the OP, great idea. I feel the same way as you do pertaining to a "perk" or "class" system. To some degree it binds the player to a choice. I'm still not sure whether it should be in the OP, but I've added it for the moment. I would like to see more debate on perks and classes that way we can all come to a consensus. I know that, for the most part, people will stick to their guns until the end; so changing anyone's mind is most likely off the table. However, I think by adding it to the OP there will be more debate, and out of that maybe some clear, concise answer will come. As far as the map, if everyone's Alt + Tabbing over to the map anyway then why not give everyone a map? Besides that, if you factor in random events, random drops, and many of the other features we have all came up with then an in game map could become far more useful than a browser map. Maybe so useful that you didn't give everyone a map after all, and they become something of real value.

I would like to see "lonewolf only" servers. Servers that make it impossible to group up with outside friends.

Not because I'm scared of groups or have no friends, but because it would create a place for people who think that DayZ should be played alone and that teams should only be created inside the game world.

How on earth could you force people not to team up though? Also: adding AA guns to OP.

Everyone great suggestions, keep them coming! I'm updating the OP right now.

What i think would be cool if it was built in a metropolise with 20 story buildings large shopping centers underground subways and such. I think if it was in a big city where 1 building could be explored for hours, or even with a group be able to take controll of a floor of a building as a camp then many groups could be in 1 building trying to keep it free of Z's .They could have generators in the basement that it fixed and fueled could supply lights the keep the Z's at bay but let the lights go out and the Z's start to spawn in again.

This might be all pie in the sky but i think it might work.

I would like to add a suggestion about the link on skills why not earn xp on kills either Z's or survivers then be able to use the XP to buy skills. There could be lots of skill types like shooting for one and then different levels on each skill, so a level 1 shooter could use say a macrov or double shotgun a level two can use revolver and a winchester up to like level 5 needed for the really good weapons like the L85a2 which need a lot of training to use. Have the skills carry over deaths but not the xp and dont bring in player levels just a big XP pool so people can get the skills they want when they want and ifthey want to try for a level 5 skill which might need lots of XP to buy then they have to risk not dieing and looseing all of it.Have a think of this option it would really give people a lot of choices and lots of deversity in the game.

How come in the entire dayz not a single military post survived? All dead while a lousy civilians survive for several days or even longer? Why not add some military camps or at least traveling military units throught a map? They could react have a itchy finger to shoot on sight or be helpful and if u bribe? or plead for help - give u an escort to closest city or whatnot...

It would be reasonable to find some cover before you log off - logginf off in the forest or open terain could make u sick/wet on log in?

Military camp or any other safe heaven where you can obtain info on events around. Information on some bandits killing people around some areas, heli crash or convoy crash/ambush so you can avoid or check out if brave enough :) Or a working broadcast tower to which u can tune (if u have a radio or walkie talkie) to get some info.

I'd want simple things added/fixed.

Being able to jump - not Lara Croft epic jumps, but i am quite sure that if i am chased by raving maniacs i could quite easily hurdle a small fence instead of having to stop and Vault it like a chump.

Car keys - c'mon, if you find a car are you really going to leave the keys in the ignition if you know other survivors will steal it if possible? Bring in hotwiring by all means!

Radios - just so as to have an avenue to Side Chat if you want it.

Sharks with Laser beams on their frigging heads - why not?

Explosive mines would be interesting.. You would bury the mine underground and arm it, and when someone walks over it... BOOM! Mines would probably have to be incredibly rare, as a map full of mines wouldn't be very fun.

In order to modify the thread's current proposition regarding inventory space/shopping carts:

A la Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road', you can build a cart. Wheels are a commodity and can be attached to various things to create push/pull carts. a piece of wood and 4 wheels would make a skid that could carry tons of stuff... but good luck finding 4 wheels. 1 wheel and a board could make a smaller push cart that only holds 10 or so item slots. Wheelbarrows also exist... maybe they are rare but have their wheel intact. A nice, if not overly significant find.

ROPE!!!!

This would be a commodity in an apocalypse. Binding splints, securing the aforementioned wheels, creating boundaries, making sling traps, lassos for wrangling animals and baddies. There are tons of reasons to include rope (presuming it can be modeled of course)

Wood boards / planks

Relatively common items that can be used for many purposes. Again, the pullcarts... but also for boarding up a broken window or door, creating a fence etc...

Candles

Duh... another light source that you'd find a lot of. You need matches to light them, obviously.

I think we are starting to stray away from the core game play of dayz. First classes, then perks, now exp pools. While I do like the idea, I think going down this road will only lead to more comparisons with that other game that's coming out soon.

Do I think that you should be able to get over a fence and keep trucking? Yes. But an actual jump key, not at all. This would lead, inevitably, to the old hop around each other in circles and shoot fighting tactics. I would hate this simulation turn into Halo.

I liked where you were going with the first part of your post, it feels like you were elaborating on the "crafting" thing that many have suggested but few have elaborated on. I'd still like to see a bit more on the subject though before I add it to the OP. Definitely adding candles to the OP though.

Classes, talents, perks, More motivation/rewards for group play, and more motivation/rewards for being a souless murderer.

more survivalist techniques for, hunting (making dead falls, snares etc, improvising crude weapons) More Improvised and accurate treatment of medical ailments ( Splint bones, deal with concussions, suturing/quarterizing of wounds, Try to fight Z-infection). Barricade doors. An endgame(clan up, garrison airfields permanently, Maybe a guild equivilent of a safehouse.) , A way for cross clan corresponsence and trash talk. GM/Admin events.

Well here's some more discussion on the fence idea.

I don't think the crafting element can be too in depth (for resource hog reasons). I also don't think it needs to be. It can be effective without being too complicated.

ie: You want to build a fence of about 20 feet

What you need

1x residential toolbox - Difficult to find. this will contain everything required to make "everyday" crafted items. Would contain a hammer, nails etc...

10x wooden boards/planks - medium spawn probability. They're in residential and industrial loot spawns

10x firewood - Essentially these would function as posts... It's not 100% logical but its easy as you can cut them in any forest.

The high amounts required would stop a single person from building a walled in structure in an hour. I would hope this would take a team of 5 guys an hour to forage (presuming they had the toolbox). So it'd take a considerable time to build a full-out walled in enclosure.

You can mount petrol fueled lanters (another idea), flares, chemlights, candles, or lights (powered the generator idea) on the wall. If you are lucky enough to find copper wire (another new item... like .05% spawn chance in high value industrial only and only gives you 20 feet), and you have the petrol required you can make it an electric fence... although it seriously sucks the petrol.

It would function as cover against bolts from crossbows, but nothing else. All other damages decreased by 20% when it goes through... the tricky is you can't just run through it. You've either gotta blow it up, shoot 10-12 rounds into it (giving away your position), hack it apart melee style, or take it apart with a toolbox... which would take a considerable amount of time. Zombies would just walk into it and turn around unless they were aggro'd by someone behind it... in which case they'd rip it open in seconds.

Adding all this to the OP. I really like your example too, and couldn't agree with you more that any crafting system should as non-complicated as possible.

I want to see a US style map, with cities and towns. Schools, office buildings, sky scrapers, airports, fast food restaurants, walmarts, etc etc.

I'll add this, even though it falls under the MOAR! category IMHO. Perhaps no one else will suggest it after this ;)

I would like to see a gun jamming mechanism like a 0.5% chance of it happening every time you fire or you have to maintain your gun e.g. clean it or repair it and if you don't it jams more frequently and could possibly backfire and injure yourself.

OP, you're post is great I loved almost all the ideas.

The one I really, really want to see is you only being aloud to have 1 character and that whatever server you pick with that character is the only server you can play on until that specific character is dead. that way a sort of community can get built up on servers and you would know who people are etc

Another thing I would like to see is, if you see someone and you dont know there name there could be a hotkey you press so that the mouse appears and you are able to click said person to see if they are friendly or not.

another thing I though was factions but when I thought about it further it just seemed really stupid... The eve idea is much much better. You have the Corporations and then big alliances between those corps. I think this is great because it is player made factions with there own territory in game.
