Lets Discuss - Way-Points.

Recommended Posts

I have been noticing a few threads complaining about servers that do not have way-points enabled. I personally would like to hear why people are so dependent on a way-point system when the game gives you plenty of tools to navigate on your own and stresses your critical thinking abilities.

Lets talk about way-points, the pro's and con's of having them on or off.

the pros would be quick navigation ability. a great tool for learning how to navigate in the game. figuring out your longitude and lattitude. although a con would be relying upon makes you dependent upon it instead of being able to identify your surroundings and find yourself on the map. i personally play with dayz db open, and even if i have access to the way point and CH. I still rely mostly upon the db map to know my locations. although i kind of think that too is a little unfair. the realism is the most important part. I hope that in the stand alone rocket hires several survival experts to add to the experience.

people have a problem because they have trouble with critical thinking. most gamers want things handed to them. they no longer think for themselves because of being conditioned that way by the game makers.

I don't see how it fits in with the Authenticity rocket wants.

There is nothing in the real world that tells me exactly how far and which direction, without a GPS that is.

There are waypoints?

I had no idea. The most in-depth thing I've seen is my location being marked on my map.

I think they'll remove waypoints eventually. Being able to set a waypoint with just a map pretty much makes things like a compass or a gps useless.

Yep, point to where you wanna go on the map and shift + left click it.

If you press shift left click on a map you can enable a small circle with waypoints. Then when you go back in game you will have a marker to tell you the distance to your waypoint.

Waypoints is ok for noobs and begininers I suppose, but it really takes away from the immersion of the game. Especially those that rely on them.

I only play on servers with no waypoints or 3rd person.

Eh. Waypoints are one of the convenient non-realistic things that are there to make up for something you could do in real life but can't in the game due to engine limitations. That being said, you should have to have a gps to use them.

In real life, a gps won't just tell you your longitude and latitude. It'll tell you exactly where you are now, how far away you are from your target, which direction it is, and give you step by step directions on how to get there. Hell, you can slip it into your pocket and just let the annoying robotic voice direct you to where you're going without even looking at it. It essentially gives you an audio waypoint. Visual waypoints are just a lot easier to use in video games, so that's what you get.

That's what I was thinking. Waypoints don't have to be totally removed from the game, but it should be something that GPS provides instead of the map.

When I first heard of way-points, I thought that you had to have a GPS. I really don't like waypoints because if anyone finds a map and knows the general location of a camp or a place to find something important, instead of actually looking for it they can just set a waypoint and make a beeline for it.

Well if you find a GPS you should be able to use waypoints. It shouldnt show to anyone else in the server, though. Same with map markers. If I had a map IRL and I put a cross on it no one else should see it on their map, because its made out of paper.

I didn't even know about the waypoint system until now. I'm glad I didn't, because it forced me to learn how to read a contour map and how to navigate by terrain recognition.

This. You get a can of beans.

I don't like the waypoints, they neglect the value of a Gps or being able to read a map.

I like when the waypoint is turned off. My friends were kinda sad that 128 didn't have it, but personally i like having to use the compass and map. Reading the map was never a problem, even as a newbie. I just have good feel for direction i suppose!

I've never used it before. I use the compass and map, if I've been in the area enough I navigate without both.

I agree, I logged about 10-20 hours in the game before knowing about waypoints, and when I found out they existed, I was super excited. No more checking and double checking the map and compass to make sure the treeline I'm following is the one i think im looking at on the map.

Cut to today, and I really dislike them. It feels like it cheapens the game (and makes compass obsolete). Is there any way to tell which servers have it enabled/disabled without joining and trying?

Yeh I'm not sure if I am convinced it's a good system. On top of the points already mentioned it also defeats the purpose of a rangefinder, you simply mark your target on the map and get the distance that way.

Regardless of how realistic DayZ will be, DayZDB or other third-party things will always exist as a way to make the game 'easier' for those who can't play it immersively. Those people know who they are - they have an alt monitor with the map up, they gamma/brightness increase and so on.

I only use waypoints when I either:

1. Don't have a GPS.

2. I don't have a Rangefinder.

Sometimes I use it to judge a distance so i can correctly zero/apply mildots.

Also, if waypoints weren't in the game and I didn't have a GPS, I would be fine. I can navigate myself.

It only makes the compass obsolete when you're playing alone. In squad play the compass comes in really handy when only one person in the squad sees the enemy. You have multiple people covering different avenues of approach so calling out clock times doesn't work. You just pull out your compass and call out the degrees to the enemy and everyone has a better idea of where the enemy is.
