More eerie sounds

Recommended Posts

There is nothing cooler than being in a city at night and suddenly you hear that bell ring while you are crawling around in the most completely darkness in my opinion.

So I thought, what if we had more eerie noises going on in the background?

Like the church bell and the little rusty gate opening - this one almost gives me a heart attack every time I hear it - there could be other sounds.

Some of my ideas of new sounds would be things like:

- faint yell in the distance

- whispers and footsteps - maybe running - in the woods

- doors and windows banging open with the wind in town

- tins and other objects falling to the ground too because of the wind

- school bell going off in the distance

- maybe ghost noises on abandoned buildings like typing noise inside office building from time to time and footsteps going up and downstairs in the firehouse/pub

- nail scratching from zombies from inside buildings - suggested by Dj Mikey

- zombies banging on walls and doors of buildings - Thanks Mikey for the idea

I know, most of these have a let's say "supernatural" cause and some people might not want this since this game was never supposed to be about ghosts or anything like that but I truly think this could be cool and add a new level of horror to the game.

Add this to a couple of shadows and rainstorms and staying alone anywhere would be terrifying.

the eeriest sound, is no sound at all.

but for the sake of suggestion, what about finger nail scratching from zombies on brick walls and buildings.

Added yours to the OP.

I agree that no sound at all can be eerie but having that all the time would take the eeriness factor away.

What if sometimes everything would go completely silent. No zombies or bgm or anything, just the wind for a couple of minutes?

Just look at Stalker to know that this doesn't work.Stalker has so many eerie sounds but you just ignore them after 5 to 10 times and then they start to ruin your immersion after 50 more times. Now the location specific sounds they added in like the fan/light combo squeaking away as you enter the underground or the banging of metal pipes as you pass certain areas is scary as hell but the constant background stuff just destroys immersion. As posted above....eerie silence is scary in itself and just hearing your footsteps and your hard breathing as you run the a dark forest is awesome. You want to keep sounds to be just a signal of whats around a corner.Think infected and your crawling around and hear that terrible moan they make,or your in Cherno and hear gun shots etc.

For me,I would go with reducing sounds across the board.Just found out that I can raise the preamp on my low volume output USB headphones and it hits me how terrible the sound of A2 is.Yes the guns sound better now as they do not sound like airsoft weapons anymore but everything else is so loud. The sound of the coast, the birds shrieking in your ears as if your in a small indoor aviary with a parrot standing by your head, the massive stomping your character does as he walks across the land etc.Drop them all down low and have players listening for clues instead of having to mentally block out the cacophony of sounds and making it all into one humming mess.Quietness where you can hear yourself panting and your feet pounding the ground at a realistic level and a very loud gun shot erupts in distance.

well...sounds do add to the mood...when i try to remember playing the first ever version of Aliens vs Predator i can still recall the terror i had when my motion tracker started beeping...( i was sitting with a friend in a dark room when i played it so imagine the panic  )

I'd be ok with this if there was a possibility to turn the sounds off. I don't like the idea of having randomized sounds not caused by actual things in the game, for example if I hear the sound of something scratching against a wall or a gate or a door slamming open I want there to actually be something that's causing the sound so I can react accordingly.

Having these kinds of sounds in the game just for the sake of creating a scary mood does not fit the spirit of the game in my opinion. Even in the case of the previous poster there was something actually causing the motion detector to go off.
