Why you shouldn't buy a SERVER

Recommended Posts

I read the rules when I rented the server. So I can't complain, really.

I can understand people wanting to make their own rules and such, only allow their friends to come in and pve for loot. I would have no problem with this, as long as that server is disconnected from the hive.

When that server connects back to the hive, you need to follow that ruleset again. And, those characters must be saved to that particular server(or a seperate private hive or something.) So folks can't go easy mode collecting gear, then jump back into the public hive.

I can understand some of your frusterations. If I shared your opinion, I'd shut my server down, as well. And just enjoy playing on others.

Yes the rules need to be followed, but the community has this weird rift between Server Admins and Players. The players seem to really despise Server Admins and have a hatred for them.

I'm not saying Server Admins should be worshiped, but I'm regularly seeing posts on the forums with people complaining about a server being locked and screaming fowl. Then it turns out the server was only locked for the 5 minutes before a reboot.

Us server admins are putting out between $50 and $200+ a month to host servers for the community, and there are a large number of users that can't wait to tell them to "fuck off".

I understand rules need to be followed, but it's about finding a balance in this community. I think in some part there needs to be players chilling out, more education/documentation for Server Admins, and more patience from players.

I also think what would help is if DayZ "staff" would start taking more of a presence and stance in these forums on certain topics/issues. Right now they're standing off in the sidelines and letting the Server Admins and Players rip each others heads off.

I'm pretty happy to host my server with the current rules.

I don't have many people / posts complaining because i do nothing to incite that behaviour.

I pretty much let anything roll, unless there is mass evidence of hacking, then I'll investigate the scripts/looking for BE-Bypassers and ban them.

When I ban someone I compile all the evidence in one file and zip it up with the originals, so if they appeal they can choke on the evidence.

Only one ban appeal happened because I banned the wrong GUID - I apologized and moved on.

Only one "zomg admin restart server" post, I set the chap straight and moved on.

I'm too old to let the whining ingrates influence my decision to assist in this mods development, if you can't deal with the criticism of a few 12 year olds, then yes - don't host a server.

Got no problem dealing with criticism from twelve year olds, I find it annoying that we're basically paying for Rocket's proof of concept thats going to launch him into a multi-million dollar game platform, and his administration rules pretty much strip server admins of their basic rights to keep their games as fair as possible without having to literally turn administrating a DayZ server into a job.

Every single person I've had to ban I have to pull and analyze a ton of information and yes I keep backed up copies of it so I can present it if challenged for it....and thats the thing, I have to defend my decisions, to some yahoo who is going to make millions of dollars off using my server and your server and everyone elses servers as a proof of concept to rake in a ton of investment money and go stand alone off it.

And hey I'm cool with Rocket getting all the success he deserves but, I think server admins deserve a little more respect than they're being given. Right now hackers have more power in this server system, than server admins do. Hackers can hack with impugnity til their hack gets banned and, long as they don't get Hive banned, they just buy another copy of Arma and get right back at it.

Me and my clan put out a ton of cash to put up a server, and we can have all of that yanked out from under us, simply for banning the hacker I mentioned, and not being able to conclusively prove that the hacker was hacking...its not like ESP shows up in RPT files or scripts or server console.

Thats pretty much crap, I mean if some clan teabagged Rocket for hours back in the day then banned him from their server or something..thats great, but the obvious distrust of server admins that the hosting agreement implies just fuels the insane sense of entitlement most players have.

I have to say that there should be passworded servers, obviously so the server hosts can filter out the hackers. If instead of resources being put in to filter out hackers aren't working how about putting in place filters to prevent them? You have to apply to get a server password etc your added to a mailing list every 24hours password is changed and e-mail is sent to everybody that has been accepted. If ANY proof is given that passwords have been leaked by users or he is actually a hacker removed from mailing list until proven innocent? I don't think this would be a good idea globally for DayZ but it could lead to more hackers being banned possibly through filtration.

Well after 2 months of running my server LU70 i will not be renewing it as hackers just take over, theres no real way of stopping them. This is a great consept for a game but its just to easy to hack and get away with it, ill still play the mod of course but i can see alot of server owners shutting there servers down due to having no powers even though we pay for our servers. As it is server owners have no more rights with there server than joe blogs who just joined the server. Private Hive is the way forward imo

ok i think people need to get a little perspective on the matter

Hackers currently seem to be one of the largest problems with this mod. The first line of defense against this has always been server admin. Taking away their ability to decide when to kick and ban cripples this and leads to far worse gameplay then any admin abuse can supply.

Best case senerio:

Sever admin buys server and tries to provide a safe healthy server. Hackers are kicked but occasionally mistakes are made and non hackers kicked/banned as well. Now non hackers have to *gasp* play on a different sever! with all their stuff... since its HIVE people.

Lose you camp? get a friend to go get your stuff. Crisis over.

Worst case senerio:

Admin is abusive of his power. He resests servers, kicks players who kill him and bans people for little or no reason. Now you have to *GASP* play on a different server!

I really dont see how the risk isnt outweighing the benefit. With all the hacks and duping and other cheats admin abuse is kind of the least of the worries.

As for kicking for clan mates.... the dude pays a 100 dollars a month to run the server you play on for free. That should get him cut in line privilages. Its a simple and reasonable arguement. Now you have to take a few minutes to log back in or simply go play on a different server. Was your gameplay interupted? well go pay 50 - 200 dollars a month and not have to worry about it like he did or find a server with a no kick for clan policy (which mine would be by the way if i felt owning a server in this mod was worth it). I dont understand how downloading a alpha mod for free gets you privilege and entitlement... this guy on the other hand is paying money out of his pocket, managing a server and supporting the

community. Again... get perspective

For the record im addicted to this mod and love most of the devs ideas and approach but i really disagree with their admin policy and wont buy a server till its changed

All the admins want to do it lock up a server and farm loot.

I have only locked my server once and that was due to a hacker joining. I couldn't get into the admin panel to shut it down so I locked it to save other players from losing their progress.

I don't rent a server myself because I can see no real benefit to do so other than be a nice guy and add another server to the community. I have heard people say they use their servers as a "bank". Meaning they rent the server, set up tents in chosen location then stop the server. They leave the server turned off, only turning it on to hop on and store loot in tents or grab gear, then hop to the server they play on and turn theirs back off. It's an expensive way to save gear imo, but it's the only possible advantage I see to owning a server aside from just adding another one to the hive.

Thats just it there isnt any advantage to hosting a server, ive had enough of paying for mine with no benifits not even reserved slot. So its getting shutdown ill get the same amout of fun on other servers without the cost

I killed a admin on US 1479 and he restarted so it wont count :/

No. There are only 3 possible reasons why the server was restarted. Either it was scheduled, it was a crash, or it was a restart due to a hacker mass teleporting everybody (Thunderdome).
