RE: Private Hives and 'The Rules' - (Update from Rocket inside)

Rocket has changed his views on Private Hives, he wants them in to combat hackers. Discuss.

Kinda funny that the guy gets sent to the thunderdome during interview. But ya... rocket will figure out something

Because they ruin the whole point of why the game was developed?

Maybe that has something to do with it.

Hackers don't?

looks like rocket took advice from my sig.

I am glad he now recognises that user created content is something he is supporting, like he said going forward private hives and user craeted content are something he now seriously needs to consider.

Yep, it will keep people buying arma, keep player base up, he knows this, he's a modder.

Ive been playing on my own private server following a few deaths by hackers. Ive played solo (which is still challenging but not as fun as with other players, the way its meant to be played).

I personnally think theres room for both - I still hop onto official servers and play my 'other' character. This kills two birds with one stone - there are many players wanting multiple chars, now they can.

It stops server hopping, stops alt f4, and removes a massive dependancy on the central hive server.

Edited original thread post and went to the trouble of transcribing what Rocket has said on private hives and servers in his latest interview for those who are too thick-headed or lazy to go and watch the video for themselves. Lets not twist these words around, shall we? I don't want to hear any more of the this bullshit of speaking of Rocket's behalf about his "vision".

UPDATE FROM ROCKET:"... recommend at the moment to do private servers for the live streams. And that actually brings up a good issue because a lot of people have been asking for the ability to create private servers or separate hives and things like that. And I think that's something we need to seriously think about as well going forward, um... you know I wanted to keep it like it is at the moment to get the message out there, to say: "This is a multiplayer game!", to the people we could use for financing and things like that. If they saw that the idea could be taken as a single-player game then they would have gone for that. So what we've done here is we've, you know the gamers have spoken and said "we wanna see more of this", so... we don't have to worry about that so much. So I think that we can probably come to some solution here and in the short term that would help with the hacking".

That's hilarious. I've actually been wondering why I haven't seen more hacking on streams lately.

At first I raged when I read his comment "recommend at the moment to do private servers for the live streams." Some people watch these live streams, and buy the game as a result. If they are only watching a canned environment, where hackers are dealt with quickly, and then buy a game in which they are forced into a unstable (hacked) environment (hive/non-private) - that's just wrong. However, at the end of his statement he seems to come back into awareness of a possible solution to hackers, as a result of private servers.

Glad this happened while he was talking to them. That whole video was pretty sad to be honest. The constant hacking, battle eye bans, etc really showcased the current state of the game - and many, many people witnessed it.

As a training server , i see no problem with private servers with a limited weapons/vehicle capability.

BUT.

They are too easy for full time play and don't fully reflect the mod , it splits the community and keeps people locked away in a bubble where everybody becomes familiar when infact every encounter should be random.

Keep playing in your private bubble missing the whole point of the dayz experiment.

Glad you guys like the game enough to try and ruin it.

Says the one laying on a hilltop with an AS50 shooting people and jacking off to blood-porn like every other FPS out there.

If one wants to have a 1/50 private hive to acquaint oneself with the maps and basic mechanics, I see no reason for anyone to argue. We could call it DayZ: Training mode.

Private servers could be DayZ: The Next Day since it has more of a community structure, people trying to survive, etc.

The current DayZ could be called DayZ: The Fall since everything's gone to shit and people are shooting each other for points.

seems like a good short term thing for those lucky enough to have a password for a private server, but not something that's going to lead to widespread success of the game

seems it could lead to a lot of other issues as well when servers are full

Something that I think I should stress right here and now is that 'private' servers =/= password locked. Private is becoming something of a buzzword for non-hive servers, and absolutely anybody is welcome to join it. It's not some closed-off community in a bubble in most cases. Hackers can still get in, but are usually banned in short order. Server-hoppers and ghosters are crippled, and everybody else gets to enjoy the game just the same as before.

I'd rather the private hive community come to the public community and setup trading posts medical teams, try to change the public game. I don't think the game itself can evolve if the helpful type players play on private servers detached from public play. I'd like to see the helpful players band together and make a public stand.

These things aren't possible on the hive because of the hacks, and especially the server hoppers. It doesn't how matter how helpful people are, banded together, when they're all 100 feet in the air and two seconds from a splattery death.

Face it... the hive, in its current state, is a flaw.. not a feature.

The ONLY reason private hives are working well at the moment is because there aren't as many people on them. If there was suddenly a massive explosion of players using private hive servers, you bet there's gonna be lag, hackers, and longer loading times. The only positive thing I can see is admin control and being able to kick and ban people.

I guess you haven't been on many private servers? Many are around full, some have even more anti-cheat features than the officials do, and they would never be half the load time the official hive servers do because they dont have to connect to the official hive. Full or not.

That is exactly my point. The reason they work is because they aren't as popular and there isn't as much load as the official hive. If there was as much load on a private hive as there is on the official hive the problems would be 100x worse. It's kinda like WoW private servers, they work okay usually, but what happens when the private hive goes under (And it will eventually, who's paying for it), all your stuff is gone. I see the appeal and see absolutely no reason to try and stop people using private hives, but personally I'm going to stick to the official hive and wait for it to get better. You can't really compare the two, they both have pros and cons.

If you're playing because there is a better community then you're going against the "players balance the game" mentality of the game.

Actually making private servers because the public hive is a goddamn mess is a pretty good example of the players balancing the MOD for themselves.

Its a MOD still, not a GAME.

how IS this off topic?

I'll be your forum moderator today, Legacy. In this sub-forum you are free to discuss topics that are truly off-topic and do not belong in other sections of the forums, but this also means that everything that has a sub-forum for a specific type of discussion should be going into that sub-forum an not off-topic!

The following are disallowed in this section as a topic starter, such as, but not limited to:

- DayZ Discussion (Any and all.)

- DayZ Media Advertisement

- DayZ Media

- Technical support for DayZ Mod (Arma 2 is fine, but we highly recommend posting in Troubleshooting.)

- Anything that breaks the Forum Rules.

If you end posting a thread that is not off-topic you risk your thread being locked, deleted or rarely moved if it's actually reasonable.

This is a discussion about Dayz and Private Hives.

Yeah, sorry Delta Smoke but without trying to be reckless, I don't really understand how this is an off-topic subject.

My 2cents. I am all for private servers, for many reasons. Some that directly effect me and some that don't. My personal experience on private servers actually salvaged playing the game for me, I was at my wits end with hackers, ghosts, and combat loggers, couple that with shit no one can control and you had a very frustrated player (me). The enjoyment I have gotten from private servers has rekindled my passion for the game. But enough of that B.S.

There are a lot of issues with DayZ. Admin abuse, hacking, etc etc etc. Most of these issues are connected with the notion every server has to be connected to the hive and therefor follow the "hives" rules. That's bullshit. All that does is choke a gaming community, doesn't allow it to grow or take on a life of its own, doesn't allow it to become unique. And once something becomes stale and boring people brush it off.

I am not a server admin, nor will I ever be one with the rules as they are now; however, I have had numerous servers and clans in years past for other games. Though they are different from DayZ many of the principles still apply.

I completely understand what someone posted about the hive is essential for collecting data and seeing what it can do. So with that I suggest, like I have before, Rocket and his team rents servers. Let them pay the 100 dollars a month and let them follow whatever rules they put in place. If collecting data is that vital, then they should also be prepared to commit themselves to being the ones to collect it.

So the hive would be alive, as much as Rocket and company can afford it to be, and if you want to be connect to the "main" hive, then yes you have to follow their rules. Otherwise, like with damn near every other game, you are on your own.

I mean think about it, look at the forums for servers, people bitching and moaning about being banned, admin abuse etc etc etc, that bullshit has always been between the player and the clan ( or server admin), but here, the way it is now, its left to the mob. And the wheels on the bus go round and round.

Admins should have total control of their server, for better or for worst. "But what if an admin locks the server and he and his clan mates just loot farm"- so what. The only reason thats an issue is because of the hive. If that server wasn't connected to the hive, and there was no threat of these people jumping into another server with that elite gear, then who the fuck cares? "But thats not fair"- go to another server. It is really that simple.

The system has always been - person rents server- person runs server as he see fits- community likes or dislikes server- server becomes popular or dies.

Right now with this system its person rents server and goes through hell most of the time. ( not all the time mind you)

Private servers and private hives will sustain this game. It will add unique and fresh aspects to it, just look at Lingor, thats cool as hell. Some people will like it, some won't, BUT the option is there, allow the community to determine what they like.

I don't know. It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. This thread will be locked or deleted in a day or two after it becomes a huge flame war.
