I did quite a bit of searching on the forum trying to find out exactly how much a tent would hold and in what composition. On another forum I found the answer and have copied and pasted it to here with heartfelt thanks to the author Kirii Fuchs (Thanks for the info!)

Ok so rule 1: In a tent every item counts as 1 slot. That means your m4a1 is 1 slot, a tire is 1 slot, a jerrycan is 1 slot, anything and everything is 1 slot when inside a tent.

Storage is broken down into 3 different categories, each one has it’s own amount of storage space.

  • Weapons & Tools(including NV goggles, binoculars, and side arms) – 10 Slots
  • Backpacks – 5 Slots
  • Items – 50 Slots

So an example of a full tent would be:

5 AKM’s, 2 Binoculars, 2 M1911 Pistols, 1 NV goggles. = 10 Slots

5 Alice Packs. = 5 Slots

10 tires, 5 jerrycans, 20 bloodbags, 5 Stanag Ammo, 10 Raw Meat. = 50 Slots.

So as you can see it doesn’t matter how many slots the item would take in your inventory, it only counts as 1 slot within the tent.

If you attempt to place items into a full tent one of two things can happen. The item can drop on the floor near the tent or the item could disappear. So take care when placing items in the tent.

My personal theory on items disappearing after placing in a full tent is — the items are placed under the tent or perhaps under the ground if your tent is on a hill.

It does the same if you try and put extra stuff (beyond the limit) in vehicles.. or bags too sometimes from what I've seen.

General items dont disappear when placing them in a full tent, they will be in the grass around the tent. Weapons / gear items DO dissapear when placing them into a full tent. Not sure what causes the difference but that has always been my experience.

Tents seem to be getting better. I have had 2 for several days now. I always try to remember to use the mouse scroll to "save old camping tent" every time I visit it. That said I have lost several with content in the past but that goes for backpacks and personal inventory as well. All to often I have spawned to find the tents gone, but I have also found tents added. These tents were pitched and empty. I was able to pack them up and use then elsewhere. I hope they are still there but i cannot check as the last update has resulted in more than half the server I use to go missing from the list. That and 3 updates in the last 36 hours mean many servers are not compatible and will not load (until they update?)

I don't understand why people feel the need to pitch tents in plain sight. It's like hanging a big "LOOT ME "sign above it. I always put my tents in deep brush cover and if possible away from the road. Yes they are a pain in the butt to pitch but once in the right position they can be next to impossible to see. In fact, I need to write down the coordinates to find them myself sometimes. These extra tent spawns are a problem in that they spawn outside the cover of the tent i placed and I have the impression that they actually affect the texture of the bushes and give away the position of the hidden tent. I lost a couple of nice things due to this but managed to move the rest to a new location. As a matter of fact, I always scout good locations for my tents and write them down for possible later use when i come across them while foraging.

Man, I've found a MP5SD on a deer stand yesterday - the rarest weapon I've found so far. Today, I wanted to put it in my tent - the tent was full - the MP5SD is GONE

I looked for it around the tent for like half an hour, rolled in the dirt like some idiot, but I couldn't find it.

(I just want to bitch about it <_< and this topic is somehow the only one related to this matter)

Thank you so much for this information. Considering that whatever they've coded has no error checking and really doesn't seem to be a priority to fix, probably means the standalone version will get the same exact treatment. I'm getting sick and tired of:

1. Not having something CRUCIAL like this be easy to find.

2. Having items/weapons/etc disappearing on me. It's getting to be a pain to find stuff over and over and over again. Especially with the crap vehicle spawn rate so you have to hoof it EVERYWHERE.

I mean... color code the stuff if you can't error check it and say: "Nope! You already have too many weapons in your tent!" Give us something that makes it easier to ID what is what or let us categorize stuff so we don't have to sit there with pen and paper and note what will take us "over the top."

Really...

Fishguts, thanks again for posting this info. Should be stickied if it isn't. :(

Oh Fishy, fishy, fish, fish. You clever and useful guy! This is a helpful thread, thank you!

Couple of things: I've been told if you accidentally pack your tent when it's not empty take a look around, as the stuff will be in the area, sometimes quite far; and also, try not to do what I've done-been far too clever for my own good - putting a tent between two bushy trees. It works but two things tend to happen: the tents disasappear or worse still, you can't save or access them no matter how much you crawl, hop skip or roll around on your belly, waggling your gun at them as you roll your mouse wheel - no menu option to save tent or anything else shows up. :o

Kingkrabbe, sorry to hear that, mate. I feel your pain.

I don't know why they segregated the items you can put into tents into different groups anyways. That just seems to add more complexity that's not necessary. 70 items in a tent, done. Same like a pack. That way you can look at your 0/70 or 14/70 or n/70 and just do some quick math instead of trying to figure out what constitutes a tool vs an item and then what weapons you have and see if the tools and weapons add up to 10.

Thanks, I always wanted to know but never found it out.

Yeah, I've lost a lot of weapons, trying to put on a full tend and automatically dropping it on the ground, and not finding it. -.-

Ah, once I had a tend full of snipers, then I was about to park a car around it and accidently hit the tend, crushing it. ;'(
