Why change the respawn mechanics the way you did?

Recommended Posts

What was reasoning behind disabling the re-spawn option during game play, yet allowing it once you were injured?

For me and I assume most of this community this game is the most fun when played with friends. To play with friends, you must be able to locate them in game. From my limited experience with this game I found the easiest and fastest way to do this was using the re-spawn functionality. By re-spawning and creating a new character enough times I can choose the general location that I spawn. My friends can use the same mechanic thus allowing us to find each other in game much faster. An example of this would be re-spawning until we are all near Cherno or Elektro, thus allowing us to enjoy the game together without having to spend an unpredictably yet probably long time simply locating each other.

Based on this recent patch I can only assume that this is not intended. In the developers eyes they want people who intend to group together to spend an unreasonably large amount of time finding each other. Now assuming I want to meet up with friends on a freshly spawned character, instead of being able to re-spawn to a closer location to my friends, I have to first break my bones, only then can I re-spawn? What did this accomplish other then forcing people to spend even more time doing something other then playing the actual game.

I think the point was to stop people from doing that. The game is supposed to be hard. I'd just find the nearest building and jump off (in game, not in real life haha).

Every character adds to the database and clogs it up especially when people just want a good spawn place. Finding eachother on the coast is prety easy. Look at the name of your spawn location, check a map online and run the corrisponding direction. It will take you at most 10 mins to find each other.

Because not being able to select your respawn location by spamming respawn makes death a little more punishing and give players yet another reason to live.

Players constantly respawning to get a favorable spawn puts a major load on the server and cause not only lag, but also major desyncs. That's why it's being stopped.

Whenever i need to get my friends. I just run to them or ask them to pick me up with their cars. Before we had cars. We just ran or we used to like meet up near camp or near the airfield. It won't take long to get to airfield. Just put something on ur W key and read a book,

READING BOOKS will increas your intelligence.

It makes the game harder.

That's why. Don't try to quantify it.

Harder = better.

I expected a fair amount of troll replies, thanks for taking the time to read the post and responding with a thought out response.

I realize the game should be difficult and I realize that using re-spawn in the fashion I mentioned may not have been intended, but it is really the only workaround for the lack of other functionality that would replace this. Such as allowing players to group up before a match, and then randomly spawn somewhere on the map as a group. This was a band-aid fix at best, which will not stop many people from using this tactic, except for when they get too fed up with it and decide to flat out stop playing when their friends do the same. I only bring up these questions as I want to see this game succeed. Not the countless ripoffs which will be showing up down the road.

During rockets last stream I asked him whether we would be able to spawn on friends in the future. His answer was along the lines of that he plans to implement a base spawn scenario where you and your friends establish an underground base and then spawn on it but there may be an in game penalty of doing so.

But the only problem with that is underground bases and spawn systems seems like it would take a long time to develop and that doesn't help us now. So until they we may be SOL.

This was asked and answered at about 40-50 minutes into his fpsguru live stream interview.

I know Rocket is just playing with settings right now, but I hope when it's done it's easy enough that people will play it, but hard enough that I should be able to dominate using a squad, sound tactics, and proper situational awareness.

If crosshairs, tags, 3rd person, markers, and all the rest were patched out and never came back I for one would shed a tear of joy. Been playing shitty games my whole life to get good at a game like this. Not to mention home defense, target practice, paintball, SHTF prep, etc.

As it is right now derp with a Lee from 3 hills over can see my tag, finds me in 3rd person, then uses his crosshairs to kill me.

EDIT: I am not saying I play on regular servers. Just saying that is the way the game is set up. I do appreciate the variety though.

Then don't play on regular servers...?

Anyway this isn't going to stop people from killing themselves as people have been saying. The only way I could think that could replace this is being able to pick your respawn spot. Perhaps you should only be able to pick the same respawn spot maybe only 2-5 times in one day. Not for everyone but it might work...

That's what you get for playing on regular servers. Yuck.

To the OP, there is a very good reason it was disabled. You know how everyone complained about waiting for character to create for about a million years? That was in part due to insane server load because half of the player base are constantly respawning at any given time.

While I cant argue against this, this is not the core issue. This is simply another symptom of the problem at hand, missing functionality which would allow players to spawn within a "reasonable" distance of each other. While the game should remain difficult and a challenge, it is still a game and needs to be entertaining. If I am spending more time, patching, updating, locating a server and then meeting up with my friends in game than I am actually playing the game with friends, something is wrong.

The fix as is, will do two things. Some people will simply stop playing as one or more of their friends who they constantly play with start to log less hours and flat out quit. The other people who were already "abusing" this will continue to do so, only they will now have to spend time running their fresh spawn into a new place to die, rather then dieing instantly.

Trust me, I don't play on regular servers.

A couple days ago it seemed ALL the servers had everything on. My home server admin was saying he didn't change anything but they sure were on.
