louist 163 Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) Hey all. This is my 4th day of playing DayZ.I've commited a few accidental kills, and I've killed a few people in self defense, but until today I wasn't so jaded as to kill someone who was oblivious to my presence. Today I was killed by a sniper as I gutted a goat, and later on had my leg shattered by another would-be sniper. I was shot in the back by someone who claimed to be friendly. And I had another life nearly end when another "friendly" found an axe while we were looting the Elektro Docks. He chased me halfway to Cherno. So enough with this, I thought, I'm no longer going to give anyone a chance. From now on anyone I don't know personally is an enemy. And it's been going well.On an expedition to see the NWAF for the first time, I came upon a small camp. Two survivors were cooking meat in a small fire, the smoke of which first drew my attention. I moved at a crouch to about 45m, looked down the sights of my enfield, and pop, pop. Two fewer enemies for me to face. I dug through their gear and the contents of their tent and helped myself to a real bounty of meat, canteens, a map and compass (A big thank you for those!), a toolbox, a new pack, a G17 and an CZ 550. This agressive defence business is pretty lucurative.A few hours later, after getting a little lost (even with the map and compass!), I found myself at the airfield. I spent a long time just watching the place. I did an awful lot of crawling and sticking to the tree lines. I didn't like how open the hangers were, and I thought heading for the control tower would end in a sniper-assisted suicide. And besides, not only had I heard that the barracks is the best place to find items, but it was also very close to a dense patch of woods.Things actually went really smoothly. I managed to hop over the barbed-wire someone had set up in the doorway, and greedily sucked up anything of value. There wasn't much left, clearly someone had beated me to it, but I got a military flashlight, and some grenades. Things got a little dicier when I tried to leave. I couldn't step over the wire to leave, so I had crawl my way trough a gap between the wire and the bathroom door, trying to find out where I could use the toolkit to take it down. As soon as I had accomplished that, 2 survivors came in. The first on had an AKM, and the second one (curiously) was unarmed. They didn't even look in my direction. G17 took care of them nicely. I decided to swap my CZ for the AKM, and GTFO before anyone came looking. I guess these two Alt-F4'd, because I recieved neither murder counts, not bandit kills. All in all, treating everyone as an enemy has been much more rewarding than trusting even a few. I haven't been betrayed, I'm better stocked than I have ever been, and I made it into and out of what seems to be one of DayZ'z most notorious locations. I am a little bummed, though, that I didn't find any shiny military gear; I've seen AKMs in other places.I have a parting question, if I may: I had heard that the G17 has a built in flashlight, but I couldn't figure out how to work it. Is there something special I need to be doing? Thanks! Edited July 15, 2012 by louist

kettenschutz 9 Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) Hi there, first special Thanks for you experiences. Im completely with youI was shot and murdered with the hatchet a few times. While doing !nothing!. I was just standing still in front of my killer, to show him, "im friendly"Until these moments i believed in the "Teamplaying"-faith of the game. But then another situation occurs, which made me switch my mind...I was in cherno, crawling around with a very good bag. I've seen another survivor with a few zeds chasing him.i stand up, loss a few bullets in the zed's direction and faced the survivor. I showed him the way to a ladder and he was following me.I startet to climb up the ladder so he can rebuild his stamina and maybe i could help out with items and more. So, i was climbing the ladder, and this DUMBFUCK just killed me with a pistol while climbing. Im pretty sure that i helped him with guns and items more than i wanted to.So, this is a fat betrayal to me. I tried to help him, and he just played "fuckyou" with me.For now, im using the same method as the thread author. Kill anyone you dont now, dont give him a chance to do the same. You can cry in your headset as much as you want. Until the other guys see your back, youre dead Edited July 15, 2012 by kettenschutz
zipper 69 Posted July 15, 2012 Playing with friends will solve a lot of your problems. If you don't have friends that play, take a look at the Survivor HQ and see if there aren't people who are willing to team up with you.If you die, and have nothing, you shouldn't really be upset. You had nothing to lose. All someone did was basically make you respawn. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.If you die, and you had stuff to lose, it is your own fault, especially if you were trusting a complete stranger who had nothing. This doesn't mean you can't trust people, but you can't give them the benefit of the doubt that they are next in line to succeed the Pope.People aren't dumb for killing you, you are dumb for dying. It really isn't what people want to hear, but there are very few situations that occur where this isn't the case. The core of the game is a military sim. It requires you to think, sometimes a lot, before you act. Failure to do so will more often than not end in your death. Take a moment to observe your surroundings. Try and watch people for a bit if they haven't seen you before you put the blind faith in them that they won't kill you. Often if you watch someone long enough, you will see them being presented an opportunity to kill someone else. How they react in that situation will usually be the exact same way they will react towards you.
Venzire 76 Posted July 15, 2012 Rules of DayZ:Don't get attached to gear.Trust No OneKeep a low profileTry to stay hidden and avoid other playersRaid airfields with a group of 3+Anyone wunna add to that? I'm sure I missed out on some survival rules.
kettenschutz 9 Posted July 15, 2012 Zipper, i totally agree with you.And i know that everyone tries to get himself in the best possible situation. Kill before get killed. But the last survivor i tried to help really pissed me off.So, now there is one bandit more in the woods ;)Thanks for your statement

Moxyz1 (DayZ) 10 Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) ive not killed anyone in my 3 weeks playing but died to bandits , theres still good guys in game just avoid other players if you must and say friendly when entering barns / buildings etc. I rolled 6 miles with broken leg and was patched up by strangers at cherno med tents and had my best time yet in cherno with them random guys. Dont be discouraged from being friendly ok. Plus i feel better that ive earned my gear rather than just taken it from another player by ending his game. Warhog (DayZ) 26 Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) I got murdered two times, while i was playing alone. The 3rd time i already had my buddy in Skype and we wen't surviving together. We wen't to Staroye to the long building and met two other players. I said we are friendly through my Mic, the other guys already had firearms and we only had a hatchet and a crowbar as weapons.First my buddy was shot in a corner, while picking up a water bottle, i saw everything and asked "Why?!", the answer was from the other guy:"Because you are fair" -.-Since them we avoid other players, even if they are unarmed or they even yell friendly, we back up and say "Stay away from us, we don't want any trouble" and go away.Never trust anyone in DayZ, only your close friends on Skype or Teamspeak.OT: Are the Vehicles disabled in DayZ? Because i never say a working vehicle or even one to fix, or all the Vehicles in North kept by Pro Players? Finding Vehicle parts isn't a problem :/ Edited July 15, 2012 by Warhog
irishcavemen@yahoo.ie 65 Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) The only people I will trust with cautiousness is a person thats unarmed , if I see them with a weapon than ill run for my virtual life .The only person I will FULLY trust is a person I know in real life. maccoy 0 Posted July 15, 2012 went in with a great outlook on life.....yeah....guy saying he was friendly and then shooting me was the last straw....now i kill pretty much on sight...."friendly" or not
zipper 69 Posted July 15, 2012 And i know that everyone tries to get himself in the best possible situation. Kill before get killed. That is not what I am talking about. You do not have to adapt a shoot on sight style of play in order to succeed in the game. There are a few places you will obviously want to use this (NWAF, Starry, basically anything in the north). But you don't have to kill everything that moves. Running up to someone and yelling friendly is a death wish. There are much better ways to group up with strangers that don't involve you running right at somebody. Be creative in how you think about things, and ask yourself how you would react if a complete stranger did what you were about to do. If you put survival as your number one priority, and then answer that question, you will more often than not be able to figure out exactly how the stranger is going to act when you do the same thing. mrducky (DayZ) 33 Posted July 15, 2012 Yup. Just keep shooting 'em all. Much less trust issues and all that to worry about. Besides, it's a deathmatch game after all. ;)Or if you really want to spend a few weeks getting bored, I guess you can go with the survival play style by mostly avoiding people. Hunting others is more fun though. It's your choice.
Paraguin 1 Posted July 15, 2012 I wont lie, I have had my dark moments. I have a group I play with alot and I have had times while traveling to meet up with them I have bumped into other friendly survivors. These survivors were well armed and I would say friendly back. Knowing I was going to meet up with my group already as soon as that random survivor let his guard down I put a bullet in his head. I wish there was some kind of incentive to try to let people live cause I did feel bad but upgrading from a makarov and hatchet to a M1911 and AKM made it feel so right!I do try to help out fellow survivors when possible and for the most part I have not been killed by people I have armed. If I have a hand gun and a rifle I often drop the rifle for them if they have nothing and so far I have not been gunned down for that.

You do not have to adapt a shoot on sight style of play in order to succeed in the game. ...and i learned the opposite again todayI was up with a friend in cherno, we were changing baginventory. A stranger comes in and i yelled "FRIEND!"He just looked at me, then at my friend who was laying on the floor and gave him a shot, i shot his head and he disappeared!Im pretty sure he pressed ALT+F4 .. shitheads. If they are bandits, and they are going down, they should die as a man dies. i really hope that almost all servers get the cheater ban functionafter that i was in a church, and i allways close doors behind me, so i'll be noticed if someone enter the room. There was a stranger with a bag of zeds behind him. I blasted 2 of them and the stranger runs away. i thought, "okay, i need no thanks to feel good"i was running back to the door and close it again. a few seconds later the door opened again and i was running as hell into cover. The same stranger comes back and shot at the wall i was hiding behind. i sneaked out and gave him a headshot between his fucking eyesI dont really know whats wrong, maybe my face is ugly or i smell like a zed, but if i meet another survivor, its an asshole ...Its me, or them. louist 163 Posted July 16, 2012 Thanks for the replies everyone. It seems my experience is very typical, which is a shame, really. I've only had one "good" experience with a stranger, on my second day. A real-life friend and I were trying to meet up. He had spawned west of Cherno, and I east of Elektro. At this point we both knew very little of the geography, so to make meeting up easier, we both followed a set power lines towards each other. When we found each other I noticed a player, armed, was following my friend. I called out "friendly" and he asked if we were armed and what we were doing up in the mountains. I told him--truthfully if not exactly wisely--that we had only an axe between us, and had spent an hour trying to meet up. He contemplated this for a minute before telling us to run down towards the coast. He told us he would keep his weapon trained on us until we were far enough away for him to safely continue on his way. Despite his promise not to shoot, we zigged and zagged our asses off. That's the closest either of us has had to a peaceful encounter. Neither of us are willing to trust others anymore.

Toxx (DayZ) 2 Posted July 16, 2012 It depends on my gear, how I react. If I have anything really worth saving (Range Finder, GPS, Night Vision, M4A3, M24, DMR, M107, AS50, M14, Ghillie suit) I shoot on sight, if I feel he's a threat (anyone too close or with a primary weapon). If I'm just a few hours into a new life and my gear isn't top notch, I try to be friendly - at least towards people who don't look like bandits. One time we shot a guy with a lee enfield (I know it's a good weapon though). We felt kinda bad as he might have been a new player who found a good gun for the first time. But when we checked his backpack, he had a DMR. So yeah, some might even play unarmed and pull out a gun as soon as they have the chance. That's why we mostly kill everybody who is TOO CLOSE to us.
