Telepathic groups of survivors

Recommended Posts

i play with a friend using steam voice call, and we coordinate someone's death, sometimes directly in-front of them: Unsettling Axe Murder (Youtube)

its the equivalent of having telepathic groups of survivors running around

a solution to this would be to force direct chat for everyone, all the time - though would this lag out the server? is some sort of sound detection method (to turn the mic signal on/off) not viable?

Mute should still exist for the sake of combating mic spam, unless there is some other fix out there..forcing direct is something i would love to see happen, thoughts anyone?

Makes sense, but lots of time you would need a pristine environment to play in, which many people don't have.

For example, the sounds of cars outside, other people in the room, a fan, etc.

An excellent idea, however! Perhaps with a TeamSpeak/ACRE Like Radio/directional-speaking plugin, this would work much better, as Teamspeak is much higher quality than ArmA2 VOIP.

I would love for them to do that, and come up with some way to ban VOIP programs beside the one internal to the game. But also add in walkies, short and long range ones, that could be used by a survivor group to keep in touch. Or an enemy that just killed one of the survivors to listen in on the rest of the group's movements.

@ deviant - yeah the ingame voice sucks compared to external shit.. maybe a custom voice solution would be needed, which would push this far down the list of implementation priority.. as long as the server can stand it, i would welcome a test of the current system for sure

@ ultenth - adding in radios is another idea i love, I have vague memories of rocket discussing it at some level so who knows, it may be on its way

I feel like hearing a survivor's mom telling him it's dinner time would slightly break immersion...

Joke aside, there would always be easy ways not to be heard by people in the game while still being heard on skype/teamspeak/mumble by for example configurating your game so that the microphone that's used would actually not be your main microphone or lowering your in game communication volume so much that they wouldn't hear you anymore. This would just give an advantage to "computer smart" people over lambda gamers.

unwelcome sounds in the background does work against this - though theres always the chance of that happening now I guess..

there will always be exploits though.. hopefully the people doing that would be in the minority?

Oh you mean like the "small" amount of people that disconnect to avoid zombies, server hop for loot, or when in PvP fights disconnect, switch servers, move, then log back into original server and flank their enemy? Yeah....

There is no way to force people to use direct communications.

If you do this, it will only be annoying to people. People will, if the way this is done is intrusive enough, use their spare laptops or phones just to use voice comms.

I don't see why there's such a big issue with comms anyway. Imagine the survivors with TS/Mumble are just people with radios and throat mics if it bothers you.

Absolutely not. No way. If the game must listen to my microphone without giving me the option than I won't play it. And I love this game, it's the best game ever. But I'd drop it like a dead fish if that idea was ever implemented, and I am actually amazed that some people would eagerly give that permission to a game, just to keep from getting ganged up on. There are many other better first solutions, like, start your own gang duh...

@ ulteth + nuc - Yeah, that was idealistic.. though i would like something in place as opposed to nothing

@ wartzilla - i dont think the argument that 'people will exploit anyway' is enough to warrant abandoning the idea, though thanks for the reply

i am the gang doing the killing. its pretty much an exploit to use external comms, since you can talk and shout and do what you like without regard for the world in day z.. since the direction of this mod is hardcore survival, forcing mic would add to immersion and gameplay by introducing the element of player reactions making a difference

Very good idea, but almost impossible implementation.

I would love this kind of factor, but only when I have met with my friends. It would be a massive trial to play the game with buddies if you couldn't communicate externally. Until a function is enabled wherein groups of re-spawning players can spawn in the same location, this function, for me at least, would spoil the game.

A brilliant concept, don't get me wrong... just at an unreasonable cost... although I'm now thinking that allowing re-spawning players to spawn in groups of up to five, or something similar, would be brilliant. Possibly giving players that do not use the function a slightly larger amount of supplies upon beggining, and forcing groups to share them out evenly?

eg. Starting alone = flashlight, bandage, torch, painkillers, crowbar. / Starting in a group of five = one person gets a torch, another a bandage, another a flashlight, another a crowbar, and the last some painkillers.

No advantage of spawning in a group at all, yet you can do so :D I want.

my friend constantly suggests a feature where you spawn within a 1km of your friend, its a good idea - some way of keeping together on respawn would be convenient for sure...

yeah limiting to direct in game would make meeting up near impossible, but this could be combated by not limiting the use of external comm... just making sure youre heard when you are using them with forced direct

your idea of distribution of supplies over a group spawned together is a good idea, +1

Here is how it can work. If you dont want to be heard you can mute the mic.

The only problem I see is that there would be echoing. But I like this idea.

if the technical implementation could be figured, I think it would add alot to the immersion. cheers for the bump.

maybe forcing it all the time, but at a minimised level, with the usual CAPS used to talk at full level? though that would work against the idea of factoring in reaction sounds, because youre not going to instinctively press caps when you shout something.. again sound detection making it contextual ..?

There's been a few posts suggesting this and I think its a great idea.

Direct chat is a fantastic feature of the game and has created some of the best gameplay experiences I've ever had.

the problem you will encounter with this debate is people who just refuse to see the possibilities of this. They will says "fuck you you can't stop me " "I will use a second pc" "I have tonnes of free minutes ill just phone my mate" Etc etc. It is probably possible to stop people using third party software like teamspeak, but then people complain it's an invasion of privacy.

My solution was this:

People use direct chat as normal.

You let people use third party software like teamspeak but if they are talking the ingame direct chat system broadcasts a generic "talking noise" a sort of indecipherable speech sound effct. So although you cant understand what they are saying you can triangulate their position / zombies are attracted to their voice.

While they still have the advantage of being "telepathic" they have the disadvantage everyone else has of giving their position away by talking. It also means you dont have to listen to the type of crap these players spout or hear their mums telling them it's dinner time.

thanks for the support! though i will never appease the masses muahaha

your idea might help draw people in, but then again it could easily be seen as another 'punishment' idea that others would reject

cheers for the bump

Do you think it would be an idea for me to start a separate suggestion thread about group spawning? The idea keeps gnawing at the back of my brain now.

@ginger (my quotes sometimes dont work?)

like strategos said, its been done so many times before.. but if you flesh out your idea, why not? its not as if the majority of the suggestion forum is original ideas anyway. 1+

@_Profile_Shame - Thanks for the boost but after checking the forums there are LOADS of suggestions. I'd rather not make another duplicate thread.
