Booker (DayZ) 47 Posted July 9, 2012 http://gamerfront.net/2012/07/dogs-coming-to-dayz-a-standalone-version-possibly-in-the-works/21489So dogs might be possibly coming to DayZ!I think a decent way to implement the dog would be to "tame" it in a sense, by finding it stray(in the woods) and feeding it raw meat.Dogs tend to stay with people that feed them as opposed to having the player starting with the dog when they spawn on the coast!I think giving up your food resources to feed the dog will create a bond as well as it being slightly "rare" and being found also creates a bond between the player and the dog.I think in times of desperation too, the player can choose to shoot the dog and get meat from it. It would be an emotional experience but should be an option! This is just an idea with the whole dog thing, what do you think?
azimov 76 Posted July 9, 2012 I hope they add in the ability for a dog to detect other players and zombies within a certain range. For instance a grumbling sound. Would be a usefull feature instead of just having them as plain attack dogs. Also for hunting it could be usefull, a dog could lead you to prey.
iamredseal 1 Posted July 9, 2012 Feeding it cooked food should tame. Uncooked food should infect the dog.I do like the emotional aspect of in desperate times, having to kill the dog to survive. Great idea!
wolfstriked 143 Posted July 9, 2012 Sadistic thing to add into this game.People get attached to dogs and we all know they will die bad deaths.
wiggie 0 Posted July 9, 2012 If you go into ARMA II's editor whilst DayZ is installed, you can sift through lots of things that have been added with the mod, mainly units and item models that do nothing. There are a few of interest that are new on the BlueFor side;BAF Light Rifleman named SurvivorA Bluefor PMC named SurvivorA bluefore version of Doctor Annie Baker, named Survivor,A Ghillie Suited Sniper, named SurvivorA BAF Officer, named Rocket, and finally, I can't remember where it is exactly, but an Alsation that is tagged as BlueFor instead of Ambient Life.I use the editor a lot to build misisons for my team, and I found them all whilst rooting around for units. So considering that its been added to the faction with DayZ, I would pretty much say that it is coming to the mod, as in part, it is already there. Booker (DayZ) 47 Posted July 9, 2012 I definitely think spawning with the dog will devalue the life of the dog/companion, the player will think "if I die, I get another one" which isn't the kind of mindset you want to have.I think if the player finds the dog and it's seen as a rarity as well as giving you a special bonus of sorts, the player will value it a lot more, also I feel if I had to give up my food to feed my dog, I'd grow a bond with it.I would also have an emotional process in my head if I found myself in the position where I had no food and was contemplating killing my companion for food, I would be waiting for that last moment where I absolutely had to kill it, like I'd been putting it off because I value the dogs life but had to do it to survive.Triggering emotional responses is what creates memories and experiences!Obviously this is all speculations but I do think there is something in this whole pet companion thing
pieflavor 38 Posted July 9, 2012 hmm wasn't the developer's objective to cause emotional pain to all of the players? this sounds like a very good idea to trigger depression on a massive percentage of the playerbase.
ZedsDeadBaby 2287 Posted July 9, 2012 Spawning with one? No way. There would be thousands of dogs everyhwere and their advantages would be pointless if everyone had one. Eww.Should be an ultra rare find, like more rare than vehicles - tied to a fence or house somewhere in need of rescue. And your dog's death should be permanent too, like yours. Also: infected dogs. Rawr.
ajrunke03@gmail.com 30 Posted July 9, 2012 I would save my dogs over a random survivor :DMy dogs would be my hunting companions in the woods and retrieve the foul that I shoot. I'd survive for ever in a zombie apocalypse and my dogs would eat like kings!
GodOfGrain 191 Posted July 9, 2012 perhaps he can carry some items in a bag :)
Booker (DayZ) 47 Posted July 9, 2012 Definitely, I think a nice touch would be to somehow also find a way to implement a randomly generated name for the dog, because with names come a personality.By the way, I think this should be moved to suggestions. D4saken1 80 Posted July 9, 2012 So everyone has a sparky, spot, rex, or fido. (because rare isn't that rare if its not near impossible to get) No thanks. The commonality of a dog will ruin having a dog. Im dog farmin brah. It's a cool idea but I guess we'll have to see how it works.Edit: Will peanut butter be added as well with the dogs? D4saken1 80 Posted July 9, 2012 1.) Old Jadded Man2.) I have lots of faith in him and how he would implement it but I am aware of the pitfalls. 3.) No idea what would make you say that.
Redshift 58 Posted July 9, 2012 There is an assumption that is being made in this thread that is unwarranted. The assumption is that the dogs that will be introduced will be friendly. It seems far more likely that dogs will be either solitary or pack animals roaming the forests and other empty areas of the game and that they will be hostile to players. Redshift 58 Posted July 9, 2012 He specifically referred to them as "companions."Hmm ok I have not seen that. The two articles I read where it was mentioned simply said "Hall also mentioned something new that will be coming to the game. They are currently working to implement dogs, with a German Shepard being the first one introduced". If it was specified by him that they are companions outside of those articles then I am wrong, and my previous post can safely be ignored as misinformed.
