Dude27 (DayZ) 0 Posted July 6, 2012 early Tips - learned the hard way  - which can save your early life: :)- Learn where you are and where you respawn (easy as you die a lot in this game), print a map and in the first seconds of the game, check where you respawned.- be bold but NOT TOO bold: with the new 1.7+, you HAVE to be bold in order to find at least a weapon, so you will have to sneak in town and find some food, medical stuffs, water and a weapon, but once you get them , get OUT! too bold=early death!- Edited: FIND AN AXE! this is an amazing early weapon, really... no need to recharge and on one-on-one vs Zed, it's worth the few centiliters of blood you'll loose, and cherry on the cake: a kill don't attract too much zeds!- The Crosbow is another fine stealthy killer for zeds... but the darts are rare!... and one take a full square in your inventory!- Head NORTH (once you have found your basic food, medical supply, water, weapon), it's not too crowded like the shores and you can deal only with Zeds, humans are more unpredictable and generally deadly.- In little village or a barn or a single house: wait, study the zeds patterns then sneak in... generally there is no more than 3 or 4... - DON'T EVER swim in water!!! you'll loose all your gears (bug?)- Don't trust humans! man, I would not want to live in this world for real when I see so much humans playing like selfish b...rds.- Always pause and observe a new town or house until you sneak in... and don't sneak too quickly as zeds can spawn just near you, once you're in, take the goods and get out as quickly as possible - check for TRAPS too... Damm humans!- if chased by a zed, try to enter a two way house (zed can only walk in a structure and since 1.7+, you can loose them quite easily - even a full crowd! in a city try to take sharp turns between blocks, in the woods run for the hills.- Use the "zeds can only walk in a house/structure" at your advantage: kill steadily and easily (if you have a weapon) or escape.- AVOID main shores cities/airport at all cost if you not have serious weaponry... and more experience! You'll die from a sniper 99% of the time.- Since 1.7, zeds are much more aware of you, so be VERY careful! (no more prone few meters away)- a little risky but payful technic for little village, barn, house, fort if you have a stealthy weapon (hatchet, crowbar, crossbow): there are few zeds, so try to lure them away and kill them one by one, you will have more time to loot until the next respawn- If there is already plenty of Zeds from rather long distance... you're not alone (other human presence), be extra careful. One can just wait and snipe you to get your precious stuff.NEW: - Bicycle is a nice way to travel faster offroads (sometimes much quicker than an old car) requires no gas and is a very good tool to loose a angry bunch of zeds that you had awaken by mistake- with the frequent deathrate, you will begin to know the immediate surroundings of spawn points, learn the places (the good houses/buidings) and be more efficient next time.- If you are attacked without a weapon and wounded at the begining of your journey... call it off and respawn on better terms!- to survive on your own: knife + matches + hatchet/axe - hunt an animal, gut it with the knife, get some wood with your axe, make a fire and cook your meat = meal + blood regeneration Also get some cantina for your water needs and found areas with not salted water on the map (print a map found somewhere on the web)... you'll still also have to find medical supply, weapons, and other gears... but at least you won't die because of food and water. and for the last tip, on a edge of cheating: if you're a rookie, try to go on less than ten players servers... you'll have less chance to be killed by a human. JamesBigglesworth (DayZ) 0 Posted July 6, 2012 - FIND A CROWBAR!Nope, find an Axe/Hatchet. These are much more common, almost every industrial area seems to have one somewhere. To equip it as a weapon, click G to open inventory, right click on the hatchet in the toolbelt and select "Remove from toolbelt". The hatchet will be moved to your primary weapon slot. Dude27 (DayZ) 0 Posted July 6, 2012 Thank you! How many attack to kill one zed with an axe? it takes about 3 for the crowbar...
xx1989spider 0 Posted July 6, 2012 The hatchet 1 shots zombies, if not it defently 2 shots them and is extremly easy to find after just spawning.
DayZPvP.com 143 Posted July 6, 2012 Just here to second everything on the list. Took me a couple weeks to learn everything you can read here in 2 minutes. I am not even going to add to the list since it is very good for beginners. I have started a blog at http://DayZPvP.com recently, please check it out for more tips. fish911503 136 Posted July 6, 2012 Good advice indeed. Another tip i learned by trial error. Go slow but not too slow....you have to find food and water. Stay low and trot when you can..prone when you must...but move as quickly as is safe and find water and food. HAtchets are my weapon of choice against zombies.I keep a gun when i find one but save it for bandits(havent needed it yet)...good hunting :)OH YEAH......play the ARMA Bootcamp campaign
Atom Quark 437 Posted July 6, 2012 Good tips but I have to disagree about the crowbar it does not compare to the one shot axe. "Heres Johnny!"
Elias (DayZ) 57 Posted July 6, 2012 Good list and good tips, well done. I have one more for the list: while sneaking in towns/villages: stick to the structures - you're a lot less visible that way (check the 'eye' symbol, it shows less lines).
jacknine 1 Posted July 6, 2012 When in the viciniy of zombies and :When on grass (making that soft sound underfoot) you can crouch run and get pretty close without aggroingWhen on hard surface (Road , or gravel ) , making either a hard sound , or a gravel-like sound - you must crouch-walk slow (holding shift) otherwise you will aggro closeby zombies. If you move from grass to cross a road, or a hard patch and zombies are closeby , you must crouch walk slow whilst on the hard part to remain hidden.Running will aggro zombies from long range no matter what surface. Salomonese 3 Posted July 6, 2012 I would not consider choosing a sparsely populated server "at the edge of cheating" its common sense if you want to avoid other players. Also the hatchet is probably the better choice.Try to pick up at least two water bottles and remember to drink and refill them when you have a chance, even when it is not really necessary. Also high on your priority list should be getting a hunting knife and matches. The best equipment does not help when you starve to death ;)Also try and keep at least two morphine injectors in your inventory. Crawling around can be really annoying. If you get too close to a Zed try rolling away. It does not make any noise if I remember correctly "q and e" keys if you are crawling. Dude27 (DayZ) 0 Posted July 6, 2012 Thanks guys, I updated the first thread with the AXE instead of the crowbar... Cheers!
brzator47@gmail.com 524 Posted July 6, 2012 Good stuff. What I'm having trouble the most is looting smaller villages. Usually there's a bunch of zombies roaming around and I'm finding it pretty difficult to take any stuff without being noticed, even when taking it really slow, crawling etc. In most cases I end up aggroing a couple of zombies, running for the hills, shooting them there and then going to the next village in hope of more easily accessible loot :(
Salomonese 3 Posted July 6, 2012 I feel that if you approach a village and the zombies just spawn that it is best to wait a bit for them to spread out. You can use that time to survey the area or check for building that are enterable. Preferrably with binos

I always roll with overwatch so I have a voice in my ear telling me where the zed is at, that is very helpful.Remember you can kind of lose the zombies now. The best buildings for that are the ones with a front and back door. In and out and you can lose your tail.
