Landmines?

How can I tell the difference between one that is armed and one that is just sitting on the floor?  I found one in a hospital and have the prompt to pick up? If I pick it up it goes boom? Seems dumb.

Landmines set on ground active are sunk into the ground, only in limited cases they are above it, but if you can pick it up means it's not active.

According to DayZ Wiki, you have the option to deactivate an armed land mine if you notice it but don't step on it.  I have never tried this myself, so dunno if it actually works.

If it's on the floor and still has its key in it, it should be safe to pick up.
