Does headshots count on animals?

Recommended Posts

Came across a deer with a shotgun, rifled slugs.....first shot was a headshot, second was a hind leg shot, deer continued on like nothing.....second time was with a sgk5....again, 1st was a headshot, but also 3 side shots and at least 2 more hind leg shots....does headshots count on animals, or is it just pure damage that counts? I always went for the headshot thinking one and done, but at this rate, Im more thinking about full blown auto into the chest.

Use a buckshot next time or a rifle. One shot and they go down.

Or use a double barrel, and use 2 slugs fired in double discharge mode.

How do you do discharge mode? Selective fire button?

Yeah, it switched from double to single slugs are 50m loads.

A double shot should flatten anything you want.

I find mags but no gun. In my personal opinion. The shotgun is hard to beat as a tool. After that anything with range outclasses it.

Unfortunately, the kill zones for animals, currently, are not highly-realistic (especially heart&lung zone). There are certain calibers that are effective against the skull, but others should only be shot at the heart and lungs to be effective. That rifled slug you shot should have been effective out to 100 meters. Sorry, comrade! The SG5-K (a.k.a MP5) could shred up the torso of the deer at close range, but 9mm is not an effective hunting caliber, especially at ranges of 75 to 150 meters.

I feel your pain, @James Adam Rimmer. Once, I shot a small deer in the skull from ~40m with an SVD and it tried to run. I would have let it if there were a game mechanic that let it bleed and die allowing me track it with a realistically relative chance of locating the target ...and if there is, I haven’t discovered it yet: each time I track an animal after shooting it, I find him/her doing just fine with no signs of being wounded (like laying down in some brush, wink-wink BI).

TIP: If you aim very low on the rib cage of most large game, it will grant a one-shot kill. I trust the reliable M70. Slugs, 7.62x39, 7.62x54, 7.62x51, and .357 are all effective calibers. Harvested a cow yesterday with no trouble.

+1 for buckshot, @William Sternritter, it is very effective against timid and dangerous game!

Too loud for me and if you miss, you're buggered.

Desert Eagle, silenced, with a scope. It's my absolute go to now. I really hope the Dev's don't nerf it. It's a one bullet bitch at the moment. Killed a stag with one shot the other day. Can't even do that with .308.

The only issue is finding ammo for it. 357 seems scarce enough. Well, compared to 7.62x39. 😉

I have no trouble taking cows and stags down with one well-placed round of .308. Read my TIP above to maximize damage.

I'm not a sniper. I find that a cowardly way to play the game.

In any case, the deagle does well beyond that range quite easily.

With a scope- You should be able to hit a good 150 meters away. Maybe not much farthur, but if I am going to get sniped- lets face it. It aint gonna matter what gun I have if I walk into a zerod in sniper line of fire.

Sorta like a funny as hell moment, I got a BK-18, ( This game has bullet drop and the weapon does not go under a zero in distance of under 200 meters. ) load in a single shot 7.62 full metal jacket, standing still 20 meters in front of a cow, aim directly down the sights for the head and fire. The cow turns away as if to run, suddenly stops turns and looks back at me and then calmly goes back to eating the grass..  I did this 2 more times and still did not land a shot.. Embaressed I threw the BK-18 down and swore I would never use it again...

OH!  & I Axed that cow

But does the game have hit boxes on animals? Yes it does. although I agree-- In slaughter houses, the animals are corralled into a narrow hallway type structure until there head goes through a slot inches from the barrel of a .22 and a single shot humanly dispatches the animal.

I have shot a doe in the side of the face 4 times with an sg5 and it just run away. It would be rather cool feature to see animal blood trails, the ability to track and finish off the injured animal, provided the animal has a stamina bar and blood loss indicators attached to it. if not we might not ever see that in this version of dayz. but who knows? Survival is a basic human instinct, and no amount of time will seperate that from our DNA. People will always aspire to test there survivability... HAHAHA  This is why cheaters crack me up...  WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU CHEAT ON A "SURVIVAL" GAME?!!  HAHAHAHA

Ahem- not you or anyone in particular- just generalizing....  (shakes head)

All of the ammo in this game needs to be up'ed in terms of damage. You can, literally, riddle someone/something with .380 and they'll run away. 9x19 isn't much better.

There really is absolutely no point whatsoever in even picking up the lower calibre weapons in DayZ.

We're talking game hunting, that's usually not done close range with a handgun. Don't need to use a scope for hunting, but wild game runs away.
Also, looking forward to seeing you in my scope 😛

Not an issue in DayZ. Sneak up to a deer, bang with a deagle...result. I've one shot several stags now. I don't know if being upwind or anything like that matters in the game. I'm sure something like that isn't modelled. But you can get very close to animals before they leg it.

As for you seeing me in your scope, you'll never find me. 😄

@Tonyeh I know it's quite easy getting close, but I did have a few encounters where the animals would run away quite realistically. Once we tracked an annoying buck for quite a distance because he was loud AF and running away. We really just wanted to get rid of that sound 😃

Last time I checked, headshots do not count on animals. On some animals there were strange weak spots.
