Proserpine 2 Posted February 6, 2020 Newish player here, playing from the UK. I think DayZ is indeed, an excellent game but it seems to me that it's a pretty damning indictment of the general thought process of the 2020 (circa) gamer/ player. I enjoy the survival element of the game, I enjoy the crafting, the infected and the gorgeous map. I enjoy the world, the simplicity of the game in its core concept... but I am beginning to HATE other players. Since I started, NUMEROUS times I have been wandering around, either in a forest or small town, minding my own business looking for apples, mushrooms, clothing to turn to rags to make rope to craft a fishing rod, bonking infected over the head with crowbars etc. I'm sure you get th- YOU ARE DEAD. Just like that, five minutes ago I was stalking the sound of a chicken as my character was getting hungry, then two players who'd clearly been following me or just got lucky jump me. Now, I admit, they didn't shoot me, but clearly one of them thought he had the biggest schlong in the game and came on over the mic, repeating over and over the 'rules' of how he wanted me to act. Putting my hands up, not moving etc. When I said I didn't know how, the other player actually told me the key. So, fair enough. I put my hands up... I then mention that I can hear a zombie close by and Mr Big Schlong says they will handle the zombie and shoot at it. Next thing I know, I hear multiple zombies coming towards us, from behind me. More bullets are fired and- YOU ARE DEAD. Now I have to ask this... why? Why go through all that (this whole thing lasted about two minutes), only to STOP SHOOTING, TURN AND AIM AT ME, and then kill me? I've been in a newbie zone before (the coast) and got roasted by another guy who had tried to copy his loadout from a war film. Fully automatic weaponry, helmet, military gear etc and was just going around shooting players. Why? As a new player, it took me SO LONG to find my bearings and my location on a map, get some gear, get a weapon and ammunition, locate food and/ or a supply of food, the same for water etc... only for this thing to always seem to happen. It's not all bad, I have met ONE person who was nice, but he ran off. Every single other player I have had ANY interaction with has been a complete and utter tool. So, now I feel if I am to survive, I have to kill everything that moves. Infected, players, chickens as well because everything else that moves in this game kills me before I even spot what's going on. My point is, I explained to Mr Big Schlong i'm new to the game... so... why kill me? Someone with a loadout like that clearly doesn't need food, weapons or ammo, so... just to be a dick? I for one, don't like playing with dicks aside from my own. Clearly, I'M the one missing something, I'M to blame here but I can't figure out what i'm doing wrong. I realise people store items by burying them (so when they respawn they have a basic loadout already setup) but I never get to the point where I have enough items to bother burying before someone ganks me. What's the general vibe in this community? Kill everyone? Or, 50/ 50 on whether you meet someone who wants to help out and team up? Or something else? I feel as though i'm working hard to survive, only to be snuffed out 'just like that' and frankly, it's making me not want to bother. Why spend hours sourcing food and items and fighting infected and looking at maps if someone's just going to take my head off EVERY SINGLE TIME.
slowfast70 12 Posted February 7, 2020 Hi, you're not alone. I suggest that you play on a server with few players first, to get to know everything and to try things out. In the beginning I was always on a server with 60 players, where I died, where I didn't even get to see the players. There are these psychopaths out there who seem to really enjoy just wiping lives out. You get more and more careful with time. I am now on a 60 slot server, but always low. I'm currently busy keeping a car for a longer period of time. Although low, two cars have already been stolen from me. I have just put together a new car and hope that my hiding place is better now. But on the server I can walk over big fields with a heavy tire without getting shot down. I don't miss these players at all, it's enough for me to know that someone could suddenly be standing in front of you. The other day I was running towards a city and I look to the right while running. There was a player standing in his shed in front of an oil barrel (it was his base). Apparently he was sorting his equipment in it. I made louder noises with my shoes. He looked up in my direction and ran back and forth. I just kept running. No shooting. This was the only encounter on the server so far. But I always find clues that other players exist when exploring the surroundings. So I stay cautious. Robzom11 109 Posted February 7, 2020 Personally this channel influenced the way i play now, it's not for everyone but i think even applying a few of these ideas will benefit or even save you. It should also help you realize what you're doing wrong. .

Alphajim 16 Posted February 7, 2020 @Proserpine I suggest you to play stealth in this game, at least in towns and bases. I know moving while crouched is slow, but you'll make less noises, be less eye-attractive and will avoid more easily the infected. Being pursued by infected in a town is a sure way to tell other players you're here. Don't hesitate to take some time to look at your environment in towns, from time to time. For big towns, try to hear for gunfight sounds, scout tall buildings / firestations or police stations as there's useually some people there. Having a high ground spot (like hills) is nice to check for other players in the area. Never rush brainlessly, especially at open areas close to cities and at fountains. And more importantly if you spot a player try to keep some safe distance, if you have to engage contact have some cover in case he would shoot you and try to have some backdoor to flee. If you have to flee, don't run in straight line and try to break from the shooter's line of sight. Don't engage a player if : You don't have any gun while he does. He seems full geared with military clothes / equipments and an assault rifle (AK / M4 / AUG) - these ones are very often here to kill on sight and feel like russian Rambo. He has a clown / halloween mask - probably a troll who will try to kill you. Don't trust a player if : He keep repeating "I'm friendly" or is constantly moving back and forth while talking. He ask your nationality (french seem to be hated in these games for example). He don't answer (even hand gestures) but rush you.

The 20% you meet who dont, make it worthwhile. you could look for a private low pop PVE server with active admins. These servers are usually run by and for groups of friends. Or you could set up your own private server, on your pc, and have it only on your lan so only you play or invite your friends to play on it.
Proserpine 2 Posted February 7, 2020 So, some really good responses and I thank you all. I've watched those videos and learnt a bit, although the 'waiting' bit it going to be tricky, not impossible but tricky as i'm always struggling with food and water. I don't really look for weapons right off the bat, I look for melee things I can use against zombies for food, especially a knife so I can kill chickens, build a fire and eat. I'm always in awe of people who say there's too much food around. That's coming from an experienced point of view surely, because as a newbie, food and water is always on my mind over weapons and ammunition. Once I have a knife, I feel a lot better because you then have everything you need to start fishing and cooking. That at least gives you something to aim for. I also like the idea of a private server, or a server where everyone is just looting and killing infected as opposed to each other. For now, i'll carry on with the game. But i'm still feeling as though luck plays heavily into it, at least for me.
Robzom11 109 Posted February 9, 2020 (edited) It's worth noting that if you're cold you will loose hunger faster, just incase you missed that. I personally love the moments where im forced to go into town for food and don't have enough time to scout, throws a curve ball into my routine, forces me to to go in blind (i sometimes miss going into a town carelessly, as you never know what will happen). I'm wondering why it's such a struggle for newer players to find food, i feel most my food as a freshie comes from houses, i mean i do die & struggle from time 2 time but once I'm set on food im good until i get too comfortable and eventually realize im low on food. It may be map knowledge allowing me & experienced players to efficiently go from town to town without starving, while new players are taking longer routes and missing nearby towns. Seeing all these new players struggle with food makes me want to go to the coast & find one and help em out lol. Also livonia is apparently alot harder to find food, i haven't touched that map yet.
