wolf spawn xml

Recommended Posts

Hi there my lovely brains trust!    I am having issues with finding any information at all on the wolf spawn xml.

so my problem is that (I newbie and uneducated in coding at all) I am unaware of/cant' find what the different spawn areas for the wolves are.

so they are WATER   REST   HUNTING GROUND

what do each area actually do?   got me frustrated to say the least

 thanks everyone

mum

ps. or if you know where it is, a page that actually explains it lol

I won't be able to help much, since I barely touched the wolf_territories.xml myself, but I'll do some wild guessing:

As far as I understand the coordinates define areas around which they will roam, and the Water/Rest/HuntingGround defines what they do in each zone. Herbivores will wander between drinking at water sources, resting in fields or walking around grazing (and making noise) depending on the type. As for wolves I believe they will instantly aggro on any player, zombie or animal coming in range, hence we never see them drinking or resting since they're coming for our throats long before we see them...

The spawn event is controlled from events.xml ("AnimalWolf") so here you can increase the amount of flocks spawned at any time (<nominal>) and/or the amount of wolves in a flock (min/max). As for where they spawn I suppose it is randomised for each defined territory, picking either of the coordinates listed for the territory. Hopefully someone else here knows better!

This is an interesting thread.  Been slain by a pack of wolves 4 my last 5 deaths.  Would really enjoy hearing someone expound on these Water/Rest/Hunting Ground designations.

ok I think I have figured it out  (maybe lol)    water rest and hunting grounds are I think as follows.  water   means they can activate randomly and without player presence, rest means that the wolf spawn is activated by players in the zone and hunting grounds are the area on influence (activation areas) other than the previous two.  so each area of a wolf spawn has 4 - 5 water /rest spawns with another 4-6 hunting grounds.

but to expand on why I wanted to know this info, it's because we are making our server winter for 1 week a month with wolf zones being added onto for simulation of them roaming more into the "populated" areas of the map.    also hoping it scares the crap outta players when they are happily walking through a "safe" area and hear wolves howling hehehehe

Have you also figured out what player behavior activates them? I have roamed more than enough wolf areas but I'm still a bit unsure if it's just presence or some specific behavior(s), is it tied to time of day etc.? I'm sure that being loud does it, however; there were also occasions when I heard them howl but they did not charge after me. Made me think that there are other players in the area, at least I did not see them chase zombies or other animals. Also, when there are more players together, do they follow just one of the them? It seems to me that is the case.

I have noticed more of my wolf encounters occur when the sun goes down at dusk and early night-fall. I've been attacked standing during midday while looking at my inventory and I've been attacked jogging. I don't believe player behavior triggers them, however, it seems more likely that the type of terrain the player is on, and worn footwear affect the variability of a wolf spawn due to the noise generated by player movement. I'm only speculating. Once, I spawned wolves out West, sprinted to a shed, shut all doors, and they passed by howling. They never found me that night, but maybe it would have been different in the day.
