We call it debug you're off the playable map to the north or west.

People used to build camps and hide vehicles out there, there was a fix to make stuff stored out there despawn way back, not sure where that's at in the current game.

It's infinite, it just renders/generates more as you move in.

Yeah, I always carry a compass but orienteering gets harder the farther you get from landmarks to verify your actual location.

On the upside the 200sqkm+ of playable map is one of the biggest ones out there.
