Hero Challenge

Recommended Posts

Hear ye, hear ye!

I present unto thee my hero challenge for DayZ.

Ok, theatrics aside, I’d like to put forward an idea for the community to help show both new and experienced players the more diplomatic aspect DayZ can possess.

The challenge:

Upon starting a new character, you must play that character as a hero until your inevitable demise.

This entails gearing up as much as you can, and actively seeking out fresh spawns, to fully geared players, while presenting yourself in nothing less than a friendly manner.

You must NOT have your weapon out while approaching players. Instead, you’ll have your hand up in a wave, while trying to establish communication with said player(s).

You will do your best to give Bambi’s much needed resources, if you’re able to part with items. You may escort Bambi in a hero fashion to help them gear up, if you wish.

You will not draw your weapon unless actual hostility is shown towards you. Nothing less than shots fired at you.

While performing this challenge, no masks are to be worn.

You will wear a white armband.

This challenge will not be easy, as the will to survive typically causes folks to shoot first and ask questions later.

I’m sure you’ll have some interesting experiences while performing this. If you have any moments you’d like to share, or additional thoughts on the subject, please share below.

I’ll be out there doing the same.

Good luck survivors!

Was playing last night on a random US server, playing the above style, as I usually do.

I came across a couple of fresh spawns, and brought them back from the brink.

After a bit longer I stumbled across a decked player. He was wearing a mask, though I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. As I attempted to talk to him, hand up in a wave, he raised his barrel up towards me.

At this point anyone else likely would’ve taken him out, though I tried a few more times to talk him down. After hearin him fire a few rounds at me, I pulled my m4 out and landed two shots on him before he got the better of me.

Once re-spawned, I noticed I was just south of the city I was killed in. As I headed north I bumped into another fully geared player.

This guy waved as I did. I warned him that there was a bandit just north that killed me, and I was out to get him.

No sooner after saying that, the guy dropped me water, and a loaded AK. He turned his mic on and we chatted for a bit. He decided to help me and followed me towards my last location.

Before we could get close we got the “message received” error and got kicked.. He sounded like he may have been from Western Europe.

Thank you good sir, whoever you may be, for sharing gear and attempting to help a stranger in need.

Tried this in full medical outfit and white helmet.

Got tired of it after 3 KOS in a row..

The mentality on Xbox is cod/pubg playstyle.

I'm 250+ hours in..tried friendly approaches several times, even seen people that did not see me and i switch to megaphone and shouted friendly only to get blasted with lead from a crowd.

Talk about being itchy or blood thirsty.

The challenge of the hero lies there in.

Our resolve to show the more diplomatic approach to DayZ is stronger than the mindless kos player..is it not?

Are you guys finding that Euro servers are more friendly / mature?

No, I used to think American servers were generally more hostile, but after some very positive encounters on US servers and very negative encounters on euro servers I would say that its just x down to luck. I'm in UK, but tend to play on American servers purely because there's more chance of meeting English speaking players on the rare occasion people actually use mics!

I agree that it boils down to luck.

I haven’t tried playing on any other servers, aside from US due to possible ping issues.

I remember watching a video from a PC player years ago, who tried a similar social experiment. Of course, it wasn’t an exact comparison as it goes with the humanity territory, though the results were rather close. Both US and EU had mixed encounters with friendly players.

Personally, I can say that I have had mostly positive encounters with people. It may be skewed as I usually had the upper hand in many of my encounters, though it still could’ve gone the other way pending the persons motives.

One example was when I was with two other guys in party chat. I noticed another player working their way towards us.

Quickly, I jumped into prox chat and greeted the player. After a couple of minutes I heard them say hello. After talking with them, they flat out told me that if I hadn’t said anything they would have shot me.

Well, they would’ve died before they even noticed my presence, though that’s a different story...

This game is quite a unique experience in the human interactions department. You never have the same encounter twice.

I’m not giving up on being a hero/nice guy.

Before I saw this post, I helped someone last night in Staroye. It was night time as I was about to roam to the Eastern coast and I saw his figure running towards me.

Back story...

Now, in the morning when I played before I started my day, I gave two gentleman the benefit of the doubt. I had them dead to rights as I laid in the grass while they exited Komarovo heading to Pavlovo base. So, being someone who has watched numerous DayZ interactions, I said “screw it, let’s see...”

They both put a hand up, as did I, and they first claimed friendly together. They ended up just encircling me, asked what I had rather than where I was going and still ended up sending me back to spawn. It was mostly me being naive not asking to holster their weapons and putting mine away. Is what it is, it’s only a game.

Now back to the original...

I saw his figure running towards me and bolted, with the mindset of Xbox. This player ended up running around trying to find me while I was flanking him, watching his moves. They ended up getting the attention of too many zombies and were doing their best to hightail it out of there. I came from the rear of the commotion and settled the zombies. We greeted with a couple of jumps then waves. Their microphone was not working because it was feedback. I told this person that I was determined to find them a backpack. 15 min later. Found one. Gave the dude a thumbs up and said take care. The entire time I was complaining about the Xbox community and how it needs to change.

Anyways, enough rambling.

I’m game for this idea and will start tonight!

Heros rejoice!
