GPU Upgrade Advice

Howdy folks,

I have a rather old rig but it still runs like a champ in most games that I frequently play (i7 860 @ 4.2GHz, 16 GB RAM, HD5870 @ 1050/1300, 1TB SSD, 650w Corsair PSU). I know the IvyBridge platform is easily surpassed now days but I'm not ready to shell out another 1500.00 bucks right now.  I feel with the clocks I am running on the CPU, a new GPU will bring things back to life.  After being on .60 a bit, I really enjoyed the increased frames with higher settings.  Going back to .59 is rough.

I was thinking about a R380 4GB.  Seems to be the best bang for the buck but I thought I would ask for some other suggestions first.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

That new Geforce 1070 that comes out in june is looking good to me.. Just over $350 for 8gb.

Hmm, I've not heard about that card until you brought it up.  Both the 70 and 80 look like they are going to be crazy good and the low power requirements kinda blow my mind.  I am a Radeon guy but this almost looks too good to be true!

 

 

Anyone else?

AMD is launching new products (with significantly newer technology) at the end of this month, you should definitely wait.

You mention nvidia and someone else mentions amd.. and that turns it into a war?

Just get whichever card has better performance/cost ratio when they are out. Bless benchmarks.

Well, AMD's drivers are CPU-demanding, this one is too slow for any higd-end AMD card, go for Nvidia.

i wouldn't say drivers are CPU demanding, Nvidia technology (game works) is used in many games nowerdays. and Nvidia drivers are usually better optimised for that reason.

 

on topic:

wait until both AMD and Nvidia have released their new models, and then get whats suits your needs the best. maybe even older models (980, 980Ti or R9 Nano). they should go down in price soon.
