_Paragon 3 Posted April 29, 2016 Hello! And interesting mechanic in DayZ would be to spot a sniper off in the distance through a glare in his/her scope. Battlefield has this mechanic but reduces the realism by not attributing the position of the sun whilst in DayZ it could be. This would make it so a sniper would have to make better choices in terms of where to camp or otherwise getting the chance of being seen and or getting killed.
-Gews- 7443 Posted April 30, 2016 Battlefield's "scope glint" is ridiculous, so anything even remotely similar—no. One specific item sparkles in the sunlight? That seems wrong, what about everything else in the vast game world? Realistic reflectivity is not worth pursuing, and I suspect any sudden reflection would be too easily noticeable. Modern optics, hunting scope, military, etc, will have anti-reflective coatings anyways for better light transmission and minimized profile.
Rags! 1966 Posted April 30, 2016 (edited) This wouldn't really do too much for the game, as attempting to make "realistic" scope glint in a video game would probably lead to an over-exaggeration of the phenomena. I found this picture on Deviant Fart, as almost all examples of scope glint are from video games, where it is extremely overpowered for balance purposes. I understand why it might be in the game, but I don't think it would make any appreciable difference when character bodies render when things around them don't at certain distances anyway. You would have to have it be so that it takes into consideration angles of light from the sun and all that, then find a way to animate it into the game at a distance without it being to obvious, as character models sorta are already after you pass the grass and shrub render distance. This would probably be an extremely low priority task for BI to work on. Edited April 30, 2016 by Rags!
nl 986 Posted April 30, 2016 More important for me would be true directional sound so that if I am being shot at I at least know from which general direction it came. I am not opposed to some moderate scope glare but like -Gews- said it would have to be implemented for all "metallic or shiny" surfaces which then maybe could be mitigated by spray painting them.
