You need a barrel, nails and the leather sack to change it's color to "black". (It's more brown than black really...)

Put the sack and nails in the barrel, close it and dye it. Voilà.

Nails? Why nails? I may not be the most experience individual when it comes to dyes and such, but that just doesn't seem right.

Dissoluting nails with vinegar will produce excellent leather dye, especially if you want to dye leather black.

It's because nails are zinc-coated. Zinc is actually used for dying stuff, so they did some good reasearch.

Oak trees are easy to find though, if you don't have nails. They are almost everywhere on the map and you can also use birch bark. Just use a knife next to the trees and "cut off bark". I just made a "black" leather bag myself, works flawlessly. The only leather that doesn't work tanning - at least not for me - is the fox pelt. Tanning takes some time, after it's done you can open the barrel again.

Birch bark however results in the leather to be of tan color. In other words it wont do jackshit if you didnt dye it otherwise beforehand.

It has to be Oak bark from the trees that (at least in 58 stable) used to give the option to get bark two times. Also in 58 the barks had no individual names, it was always called "Bark" regardless of which tree you gathered it from, but it still had different effects.
