Zombies attracted to light

Recommended Posts

I have had this idea in my head for a while and thought I would share it here. With base building coming up pretty quickly I thought it would be pretty cool if zombies were attracted to light. So lets say you have a base set up with some flood lights or whatever light source we will be given, Zombies in the area would be notice it and come your way. We always see movies where people are barricaded in buildings and if one light pops on all the zombies in the area immediately go there.

This idea was just a thought but would be cool to see implemented.

This may already be in the works.

They already seem to track player voices from direct chat and most types of environmental sounds.

I believe (due to the scant DayZ lore that exists) that the infection diminishes their eyesight which gives them unique sensing characteristics.

We'll have to wait and see!

They were attracted to road flares in the mod.  I would imagine they would do something similar when they get them a bit more hashed out.  Bit of fun I liked to have was (in the mod) throwing a flare at the edge of a city at night and sniping each zombie that worked their way over to it with a silenced weapon.

I really do hope there's much more of a behavioural change in zombies (especially at night). They're alive, and in the context of the game they're the apex predator, so I wanna feel like I'm really being hunted by dangerous and intelligent creatures, rather than a horde of brain dead zombies that simply rush at you whenever they see you. (Realistically, if the infected continued that pattern of behaviour, we'd be playing Civilzation rather than DayZ.)

Being attracted to light is only a very small proportion of what I'd hope to see though. I can imagine them stalking players, staying just outside the visual range of the lights, crouching, silent, waiting patiently for an opportunity; strength in numbers, a breakaway runner or the moment the light goes out. Whatever changes that can be made to the game that effectively slows down the run-loot-shoot gameplay will be cancer to KoSers. (Those that cannot stand the game actually disrupting their schadenfreude will be quick to leave)....it makes me wonder what the effect of having a few servers dedicated to a battle royale game mode would actually do to balancing out the overall population.

They were also attracted to sound, which is why zombies at the coast/sea were always facing the ocean and shuffling around/towards the sea. At least on the Taviana map, near the village Seven that was very obvious. I mean - we all know they are attracted to gun+engine sounds, but I was happily surprised to see they reacted to other conditions, too. It also seemed like they were less responsive to humans sneaking by when it was raining. Weather + Daycycles have a lot of interesting features with respect to infected reactions. I hope we can use them in our gameplay to our advantage even more in the standalone.

The most obvious use would be to "disguise" as a zombie, similar to the beginning episode of Walking Dead where they had to cross through a bunch of zombies. That should wear off quickly though and rain should wash it off. I think this features is in Dying Light, too. Unfortunately that game is banned in Germany, fuck knows why.

About light: definitely a good idea. Let's hope night becomes more playable with the new renderer and lights more useful. I think at the moment everyone who doesn't want to be at a disadvantage just raises their gamma. I've never used a flashlight in DayZ, except to test it. Nights could be the best part of the game. Sneaky, scary, cold.
