Yep.  Go for a swim to get to the mainland.

Be forewarned you'll get soaked and that may lead to a cold status, which can turn in to hypothermia and kill you.

So be prepared to start a fire (or sprint for a long time) to warm up and dry out.

edit: spoiler because spolier

A rough spawn there man. swimming is pretty slow. As said you'll get wet and cold so keep moving or start a fire. I advise against using a heat pack. I had used one and whenever it ran out I got hypothermia instantly and couldn't get warm no matter what and died.

^don't accept the heat pack advice given above. Heat packs are actually a wonderful, quick, and convenient way to get warmer if you are unable to stop and sit next to a fire.

But yes, if you happen to spawn on an island, look around in a building or two for some goods before departing off for the water. When you reach land you will be soaked and cold, but it shouldn't be a problem unless it's raining or something like that.

I only gave the advice because of my experience. Of course dayZ has its bugs so maybe it happened just this once because of (insert reason here).

Chucking some apples on a fire then transferring them into pockets once they get red appears to drastically speed up the warming process :)

Cool tip, didn't know that one.

I use canned goods the same way and recently found you can put a full pumpkin on a stick and heat it repeatedly without damaging it not only being able to carry a whole pumpkin on your back with the stick slot but also use it as a personal heater.

You can do any of these thing before you get in the water and you will not loose as much heat to start with and be able to hit the beach running and put off warming up instead of having to do it out in the open.
