Bororm 1156 Posted October 11, 2015 (edited) It's funny that ragdolls were some big deal that they wanted to implement, that they're popular in games to begin with. I'm not much of a fan of them in any game, and while for the most part they are a lot less ridiculous in DayZ SA than many other games, they still create more issues than benefits. I personally feel ragdolls never look right. Most games end up with bodies in weird pretzel positions, clipping issues abound. They also never follow realistic physics, and end up creating something that feels incredibly "floaty" or insubstantial. In arma 2, when you killed some one it felt "solid" for lack of a better term. It felt like you were hitting a physical object. The big problems arise when things like bodies sliding happens. I'll admit this thread is sparked because I killed a guy today, who slid under a tree. I chopped down the tree and was still unable to loot him. This happens a lot. The fact that bodies slide down hills like slip and slides is ridiculous. The way bodies go completely rigid with their glasses and guns popping off (while certainly comical) before crumpling is ridiculous. Because ragdolls are primarily clientside, another issue is bodies being in different locations for different people. As well as the actual body being in one place server side, and another on your client, resulting in the inability to loot some bodies on slopes. Often you access their inventory down a hill, but because their body server side is up the hill, you are unable to remove gear from it, as you are too far away. (some times if you move around a bit you can get close enough to the source, but not always) I just think ragdolls hardly offer anything and more often than not ruin any immersion much more so than canned animations. Of course they are here to stay I'm sure, but I hope we see improvements. Edited October 12, 2015 by Bororm
Valdenburg 200 Posted October 11, 2015 I agree with you that they should have waited longer until implementing this feature. Especially because of the fact that they simulate this client side. However i hope like you that the ragdoll issues getting ironed out, hopefullly even more "solid" then in arma2.
infiltrator 275 Posted October 12, 2015 I do a lot of fighting around Mishikino and I just give up on looting anyone I kill at the mountain slopes. He'll slide down 400 meters and even if I follow him I'll never get to loot him anyway. The bodies and terrain shouldn't be lubricated 100% of the time.
scriptfactory 620 Posted October 12, 2015 I don't like ragdoll animations in any game since that is not what death looks like. I think I remember them being added to SA as a proof-of-concept for the physics system.I personally feel they should be removed until they are server-driven as they don't benefit gameplay at the moment and they make looting enemy bodies difficult or impossible. So the lifeless crumpling of a non-functioning hunk of flesh is "not what death looks like"? I'm pretty sure that's what death looks like.

People don't turn into jelly and slide across the ground... Less this: https://youtu.be/7USlcp02vQ8?t=54sMore this (still not realistic): p.s. I am a US Army vet (91-B/W Medical Specialist). I worked in a hospital (BAMC) for two years and then was sent to a rapid deployment unit so I do have some "experience" with dead bodies. Go search on LiveLeak if you want to see what it really looks like...

Just as long as they could stop the sliding.

BeefBacon 1185 Posted October 12, 2015 I like it when games mix ragdoll physics with death animations. It looks really good when done right, like they fall to their knees and then when they're about to faceplant on the ground they ragdoll. Doesn't always look right, mind. I also like games (though I can't think of many) that make ragdolls quite rigid to begin with and then loosen the limbs so they fall more naturally rather than acting like some sort of dropped puppet... like some sort of... rag... doll? I have to agree that DayZ ragdolls are shit. They should have waited to implement them. It also affects gameplay, as some have already mentioned, in that corpses have a tendency to slide down hills. It also means it's very easy to see when you have killed (rather than knocked unconscious) a player as they tend to sort of collapse and flop rather than play an animation. Sort of makes double tapping and caution around corpses a bit redundant.

If I'd throw a grenade at your leg, I bet you're leap 6 times before landing (not rly) Edited October 16, 2015 by StanleyWasHappy
