There needs to be a logout timer - simple as.

When you hit abort it should have a 30 second (minimum, probably more) timer that starts and you can't logout before it ends.

Similarly if you alt + F4 you should stay in game for 60 seconds.

Exploiters will claim that this will result in deaths from internet kicks etc.

But that's only because they enjoy exploiting ALT + F4, two finger salute.

The truth is that it's 2012 and internet connections don't suck anymore.

And hell, even if they did, a few deaths (probably less than 1%) from kicks is better than 80% of people abusing exploits that ruin the immersion of the game.

I know rocket is working on a solution, I'm just making this thread because I really hope he goes all the way to stop this behaviour.

There will be whining, there will be crying, but there will also be more carebears dying and that, I think we can all agree is a good thing.

Agreed, server kicks are immediately effective. This solution has been around for a while, and it is getting applied, so there isn't really any more reason to worry about it. They implemented a 5 sec timer in 1.7.1 but repealed it due to issues.

My internet is pretty terrible. I get disconnected a lot from servers just over in Chicago, and I live in Indiana, if I even manage to join a game. And I can tell you, that this will result in a lot of deaths. I know that this will solve the other problem, but which would you rather have, the innocent being punished and complaining on the forums, or the guilty just continuing to enjoy the game in their own way.

Try playing with less-than average internet for a week and see how this would impact your experience.

I think an intermediate solution might be to simply kill players that log out and are bleeding or unconcious. It might not solve all the D/C problems, but a good part of it, and it is easy to do technically.

In the end, d/c ing to avoid death is not nearly the biggest exploit which needs fixing though. Its effects are negligible compared to server hopping to farm loot and for tactical repositioning.

You can't stop people from logging out/Alt+F4ing, but you could have it leave them in the game for about 30 seconds after they disconnect, and they can't join any server again until the timer is up.

Kill people who log out while bleeding? This would just make more problems because I have logged out before not aware that I was bleeding and I'm sure many other people have to.

I disconnect due to Internet issues at least twice a day and I wouldn't find this to be a problem. A 15-20second logout timer would be fine. Anything else you'll find to be ridiculously long to log out.

A- The server is at night

or

B- Something in real life needs my attention.

I can see that a lot of ppl dont play any sort of MMO, even the tradicional ones like WoW. Every MMO has this feature (even MMOs with restricted PvP like WoW).

This doesnt just effect people with interet problems. Think about this, your looting trough a city, then real life calls. You run to a house and disconnect, within that 30 seconds another player finds your character and kills him or zombies get to you.
