"But, in reality..."

Recommended Posts

I really dislike when people reference reality, "Yeah, but in reality...
That's thinking in the wrong direction. I don't think for the most part, people know what they're talking about when they reference reality. That is too strong of a comparison for a video game, no matter how realistic of a simulator it is. And is easily abused by people trying to make a point, most likely just to justify something they want.

This rifle is so many pounds. It needs to be cocked after every shot. It take these two types of ammo. The default barrel/mechanisms make it fire slightly up and to the right.
Ok.
But, then you say: "Well, the real version of this rifle can have these scopes, can take another type of ammo, can blow a hole through your neck from 100m."
Well, now that we're referencing reality to make your point, how about the rest: It's known to get dirt inside it very easily. The pins holding the barrel disintegrates after extended use, and needs to be changed. This weapon was only manufactured in small amounts, was discontinued years ago, was banned from Russia due to politics, and didn't sell well in the black market.

Any sense of true reality is a design and player nightmare. it's a game where you need a clean cloth of proper thickness and of proper length, you'd need to spin it around your arm/leg/foot/shoulder/head manually. You'd have to tie it and hope it doesn't fall off. it's a game where some pumps in town have fresh water, some have muddy water, and some have no water. It's a game where you go unconscious from pain trying to put a splint on yourself, and then when you get it on, you can't go nowhere without crawling/hobbling around, and possibly causing more pain. And you have to keep it clean, or you'll get gangrene. And the leg doesn't return to normal for a year or more.
It's the bendy arm from Trespasser

Inspired by reality, based in reality, all yes.
But when they're making the game, they should be concentrating on immersion and simulation, how real world elements are playable in the game. Not on exactly how the real world works.

Before you make a comparison to reality, please think of the game from a designer's/player's point of view.
Looking up real world application on google is easy. Having it in the game as a useful usable element that adds to the experience, is balanced, and doesn't unnecessary bog down players, and works properly, is the hard part.

It's an easy trap to fall into, ive done the same thing myself.

However we all dont want to get on one side or the other.

Well your always going to have this especially with a game thats trying to simulate reality to the best it can. And if it does not all get put in than im sure modders will add much more to the realism aspect of the game that allot of the game designers have left out for the time being.

Id welcome all the trials of realism put with weapons, etc if they could pull it off. Iv said before not every scope would be 100% accurate. You would have to probably make some adjustments in order for shit to work right on your old as hell weapon thats probably been abused by previous owners throughout the area in game.

Gun should NEVER be balanced in this game due to the fact of progression on specific weapons being better than others. Maybe balanced in certain situations but never truly so to speak balanced from a real world perspective. But in terms of head shots all guns should be equal in this respect on that part of damage. And it is to an extent.

This is very true.

e.g. the A.C.E. mod for ArmA 2.

I agree. I mean balance in the sense that most of the bullets in the game would kill someone in one hit, if treated "realistically". Someone with a Repeater or a pistol needs to have at least a small chance verse someone with an AK in a battle. If the AK worked on real world logic, one bullet would tear someone's flesh open.

That and a lot of people have a warped/misunderstood definition of "reality."

Funny that people have so linked reality to immersion. Some of the most immersive games I've played (Fallout, TES, ME, etc.) have all been insanely unrealistic.

Some people want it to be an anti-game, where "fun" isn't really applicable. Some people want it to be a survival game that is fun. That's the real disparity here.

In reality, the game has to have a balance of both. The minority think that their anti-game should become a reality, but that is just bad for business and bad for DayZ as a whole. DayZ has always been about risk vs reward and player interaction. We saw a peak of what the anti-game would be like, and it is full of KoS and little group interaction, because people could not afford to share or afford to interact, it was too risky considering how low loot was. It created an "every man for himself" situation which is as far away from DayZ as you can get (unless you are a bandit.)

This is where you get the realistic vs immersion argument. There are extremes on both sides, but you have to find a balance, or the essence of DayZ will be ruined.

But when they're making the game, they should be concentrating on immersion and simulation, how real world elements are playable in the game. Not on exactly how the real world works.

One thing most people completely forget is that they are playing a computer game, and in that game they are not playing computer games. This in itself already creates a huge gap between what is real and what is not real.

For example, practically anyone can shoot someone in a computer game. In the real world most people have a hard time hitting a still target 200 meter away with any firearm, but in a computer game it's quite easy. Furthermore, if it would be a combat situation, many would be too scared to shoot at all. They would just run or freeze. So playing the game we are already pretty far from how the real world works, and especially how we would really work in a post apocalyptic world filled with zombies etc.

Another thing is in a post apocalyptic zombie world no one gives a shit if you cry about zombies being too difficult because they can ruin your M65 jacket, for which you spent three hours to find by scouting different helicrash sites. And definitely there are no devs who you could turn to with your complaints. Most of the time it would be boring but ongoing work, continuation of pretty much hopeless day-to-day living without computer games. Not very cool and not much fun - which are the things we like to have in computer games. So, referring to the real world realism when talking about computer game is in a way absurd. Still, it makes some sense, because no one wants an AK to shoot rainbows to the sky, but bullets at assaulting zombie. Or another player.
