Floating Spawn Points

Recommended Posts

I admit this isn't well thought out yet:

The spawn region could be relative to an area of medium loot. Once there is no loot left in a region then the spawn region would shift to an area with medium loot. This way the progression doesn't go from coast to NW.. but rather from areas of medium to high/low, and you wouldn't know which was which until you got there.

That's an interesting idea.  A couple thoughts:

Now that we have CLE, there is no more coast-to-airfield beeline.  Anything can spawn anywhere there aren't players (Though I'm certain this will be reworked several times before release).

Setting everyone on the server to spawn in a single loot-laden area could spark a panicked mini-deathmatch as they scramble to grab it all up and respawn in the same place until all the loot is gone and it starts again in a different spot.  Then again, this might only be a problem in ultra-high population servers, and it's certainly arguable that this isn't really a problem at all.  It gets you bumping into people and can increase the likelihood that groups of friends start closer to each other without implementing some silly clan spawn beacon shenanigans.

Really, the more I think about it, the more I like it.  Interested to see this discussed.

I think the CLE is pivotal in this scenario.

Currently, as a fresh spawn, you can feel pretty confident that the coast is picked clean (even with CLE because the coast is where everyone spawns), and have to move in-land, with a predictable migration pattern Coast -> NW (i.e. the point furthest away from where you spawn) given the shape of the map. A floating spawn region would make the "where" and "when" you encounter other players much less predictable as even the fresh spawns won't necessarily know at which region they'll spawn. I'd avoid using, regardless of available loot, the landmark "places of interest" areas (NWAF, VMC, Prison, etc.). But from a given spawn region, you wouldn't know if the "regions" around you were higher or lower loot regions making something as simple as "which way should I go now?" a much more interesting question.

Just a lunch time thought.

That settles it, I love this idea.  +1 canopener.

CLE really turned everything on its head, and I'm so glad for it.  Also, I thought you were talking about NWAF specifically when you mentioned 'coast -> NW' in the OP.  Got it now.

Sounds good as long as they really add all areas (except military areas, but the towns next to them could be possible).

I would really like a system to spawning rather than the completely random coast one we have now

To add on to the OP's original idea it would be really awesome (in my opinion) if on bigger servers, the respawns happened in short "waves". Where 5 or so people would get dropped off near a city/town

that has been picked to be of medium loot with CLE. Would add a feel of actual competition in my opinion and a sense of limited time whilst having to be careful while raiding buildings for initial items.

The positioning of this idea would put the wave of spawned players in a circle around the nearby town just so that hopefully people dont spawn in getting punched
