Change the contents of 1st Aid Kits

Recommended Posts

So, the description for 1st Aid Kits in-game state that states "looks like the kind of kit people would have in their homes. Purchased complete".

Nowhere do I know of a store that contains blood bags kits, IV start kits, or syringes. Even having Water Treatment Tabs in there is kind of a stretch

So, I propose 1st Aid Kits be changed to include the following

  • Band-Aids (like 20): most store-bought 1st Aid Kits will contain a LOT of Band-Aids, or similar "compression bandages". These would be good for minor cuts, scrapes, and blisters
  • Bandages and dressings (like 4): these are the gauze pads (prepackaged squares) and the actual gauze wraps (the in-game "bandages") that are used to stop major bleeding, and must be combined together in order to be effective
  • ACE Bandage (like 1): Used as a splint.
  • Low-grade painkillers, and assorted medication (antihistamines, electrolyte tablets, etc). My 1st Aid kit, that I  use for wilderness survival, came with a bunch of these. Good for minor pain (AKA from minor cuts/scrapes and sprains, not broken limbs or bullet wounds), allergic reactions, and dehydration
  • Triple-Antibiotic ointment: My best friend. In an actual wilderness survival situation, it is actually rather difficult to keep wounds 100% clean, and as such, you are almost guaranteed to develop an infection if you are "out there" long enough (which, in Day Z, we are) So, before bandaging up a cut/scrape (which is what AAA is used for, "stronger" infections would require oral, or even injected/IV antibiotics), you smear some AAA cream on there to prevent infection.
  • Either hand sanitizer, or a small bar of soap: I actually carry both. You clean your hands before cooking, after....-ahem- "eliminating waste", or when examining wounds (as well as washing the wound site) .Lessens the chances of infection even further, and hand sanitizer can be used to start fires in a pinch

So, there we have a much more complete and useful 1st Aid Kit, without the implausibilities of having syringes or IV start kits in a store-bought item. Things like oral antibiotics and Water Treatment Tablets should be rare and highly-sought-after, not found in every 1st Aid Kit.

Agreed. I don't know why I carry medkits, really. I only ever keep rags/bandages in there.

If we're getting this deep into first aid, I'd like a system similar to MGS3: Snake Eater's.  The menu could even be built into the vizualizer in your inventory menu.  Press a button, and the image shifts like an x-ray scan to reveal the different injuries in various locations on your body.  Drag and drop supplies on the individual afflictions.

We could do with multiple sized kits, too.  2-slot for simple things like small bandages, the current 4-slot for a basic kit, and a larger 6 slot you might find with EMT members, hospitals, or ambulances.

The complexity is good, I think.  Nice suggestion.

  • Band-Aids (like 20): Couldn't agree more, if anything I'd say have them at a random amount instead (say like between 10 and 50)
  • Bandages and dressings (like 4): Personally I think we should stick to the wrap bandages but have an optional larger "Gauze" type bandage that can be used more often (compared to the "regular" bandage's 4 uses, the larger one could provide 8 uses)
  • ACE Bandage (like 1): Agreed, we need more splints which are not just made from rags and sticks.
  • Low-grade painkillers, and assorted medication (antihistamines, electrolyte tablets, etc). - Caffiene Tablets to provide an energy boost, Ibuprofen/Paracetamol/Asprin  as the low case painkillers
  • Triple-Antibiotic ointment: Also agree, need something that you need to apply to a wound, even if you were to apply it "after" applying a bandage (such as is the case when you need to bandage during a firefight and cant apply ointment first hand)
  • Either hand sanitizer, or a small bar of soap: Or a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide, will sting like hell but will certainly clear the wound area of infection.

I think there defiantly needs to be more styles of first aid kit as well a variety of medical supplies, there are also alot of medical items currently that don't do anything. The injection vials, painkillers and Syringe's currently serve no real purpose.

Some other stuff I think we could do for in terms of medical supplies:

  • Anti-Septic Wipes - Used to clean a wound prior to treatment, reduces infection chance
  • Poultice - A home-made bandage that can be used to stem infection.
  • Anti-Septic Bandage - A bandage which has anti-septic qualities and prevents infection, rarer than regular bandages.
  • Tourniquet - Can be home-made or found in Hospitals, can be used in moments of severe bleeding.
  • Triangular bandage - Can be used as a regular bandage or applied to arm injuries (as a makeshift sling)
  • Military Field Dressing - Military field dressing that can be found at Military Locations, often performs a similar role to the Anti-Septic Bandage but can be used more than once.

Also think we need more in terms of first aid kit variety, some examples:

  • Personal First Aid Kit - Appears as a small white case or a green pouch, pocket size this 2x1 container holds 4 spaces for medical items. Stores primarily two bandages and some plasters.

  • Soft Bag First Aid Kit - The current first aid kit we have now, holds 6 medical items.

  • Hard Case First Aid Kit - A hard plastic green case that holds 8 slots for medical items. Takes a 3x3 slot in the inventory.

  • Doctors Bag - Found in Medical Clinics and Hospitals, rarely found in residential locations, appears as a leather bound case, holds only 8 items like the hardcase but spawns rarer medical loot such as Saline/Blood Bags, IV Start Kits and Morphine.

  • Trauma Kit - Only found in hospitals, a Trauma bag belonging to paramedic's. This bag holds 16 medical items and will spawn the rarer medical loot such as Saline Bags, Defibs, Blood Bags, IV Start Kits, Epi-Pen and Morphine in addition to regular medical items. It could also function as a backpack.

  • Military Field Medical Kit - A military issue medical bag that holds 20 medical items but takes alot of inventory space (equivelant to a backpack). Again spawns rarer medical loot such as Blood Bag, Saline Bags, IV Start Kits, Epi-Pen, Defib and Morphine. Can be worn as a backpack as well.

In actuality, the gauze wrap (the in-game "Bandage") isn't going to do much to stop bleeding: it is too thin and weak

"Bandages" are made up of two pieces;  a "dressing", which is the part that applies pressure to the wound to promote clotting and therefore, stop the bleeding, and the "bandage wrap", which holds the dressing in place to the wound. The two pretty much have to be used together.

I suppose your right, although just having a much larger roll of bandage which can be used more often seems as another solution to a popular medical item. Afterall if one large roll of bandage that can be used 8 times at once, it will make a fantastic item to find, especially when your a storage nut like myself where every little bit of space counts.

I just replace the contents anyway. First aid kit is a great place to keep your splints, auto-injectors, alcohol, thermometer, etc. That the blood transfusion equipment is in there bundled does a lot to enable people to use that functionality.
