Simulating verbal communication with mic chat

Recommended Posts

It just occurred to me how useful our sense of hearing and the development of language is in inter human communication.

In a zombie apocalypse(real life) the first thing you do to determine if a person is friendly is to shout at him while out of sight or behind cover. You know he heard your voice and expect a response so you can behave accordingly.

"I am friendly"

"I am not friendly"

"I need help/food"

"No response"

Your response will be based upon the following postulates:

  1. You have verbally broadcasted a message
  2. The other party has heard your message and understands
  3. The other party cannot determine the source of your voice
  4. The other party replies to your message

Is there anyway the mic/voice chat system can be improved to facilitate more realistic conversation? What are the limitations and problems we face now?

Perhaps one limitation is we cannot control how loud we are speaking and hence the distance our voice reaches. Think about this, you ask are you friendly to a stranger and receive no reply. Did he hear you? Is he ignoring me? If there was a way to control how loud we want our virtual "voice"(voice levels) to reach say in 5m distance intervals in a radius around our character from 5-100+ meters, we can for sure if another person heard us, and hence to kill him or not to.

you can tell if somebody is friendly without talking, and talking usually gets you killed.

the only reason i survived my last player encounter was because i closed the door behind me; in fact, talking to the guy nearly got me axed.

also saying you're friendly 50 times will get you shot because you're saying "i can't really pvp"

It's funny you bring this up , as I usually whisper quietly into my mic when I know someone is close , they expect me to be far away because it sounds as if they can barely hear me , so they search the houses thinking my voice is being blocked out by walls... I'm really watching them from a bush next to the house he checks and it gives me ample time to run outta town (unless I feel like talking to them). But it would be nice to be able to control our voice levels somehow besides actually changing the level of our voice in real life , but I don't think it's high priority really .

I can't remember the last time I said "I'm friendly". It's so devalued and cliche'd now. I find it better to say hello, ask how someone is and if there is anything they need, preferably from a position of relative safety.

Their attitude over the next 5-10 seconds determines how the encounter is going to go.

I seem to remember someone (perhaps a dev?) talking about the possibility of whisper chat quite recently.

Yeah a whisper, shout and SHOUT! option will be useful and simple

So true. and yeah i pay more attention to the behavior of other players before making contact and especially those first few seconds after they realize someone else is there and knows where they are. If you do choose to attempt to actually interact (such as exchanging items) behavior really speaks volumes about thier intentions.

First things first before fancy settings is reliability.  You miss out on half the things people say some times, and sounds in general are probably one of the buggy aspects of the game.  They need to work on that, then maybe sliders and what not.  Although in my experience when it does work properly there is a little bit of environmental impact already and talking softer/louder does work to an extent.

The thing I noticed is that there is no more emotion inside the ingame chats. Everyone are pros at surviving and its like "meh, I just killed a deer and 10 zombies, plus some bandits, wassup?"
