Should I keep trying or just wait for the beta?

Hello all,

This is my first time signing up for a forum so i might be doing something wrong already, PLEASE FORGIVE ME. Anyways, I cant make up my mind on what I should do about my PC. I bought it just for gaming. it runs most games on high settings no problem.  Here are my specs:

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium-64bit

Processor: AMD FX-8120 Eight-Core processor  (8 CPU's) ~3.1GHz

Memory: 8192MB RAM

Display: AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series

Now, ARMA 2 & ARMA 3 both have terrible frame rates and just cannot run even with the lowest settings. I've read that it could be because the game developers didnt optimize the game and it only uses 4 of the 8 cores on the processor. Do I just need to get different parts for my computer? Is AMD a bad brand? Is it cause DayZ is in ALPHA? WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!???!?

P.S. I am still able to play DayZ standalone, but only on the lowest settings.( I WANT THE BEST GRAPHICS DAMNIT!!)

You have done better than many people that have hundreds of posts already. Welcome to the Forum..

Though DayZ is still in Alpha you should not be getting bad framerates while playing vanilla ARMA 2 / ARMA 3. Please note, however:

if you have mods installed for either of those two, the performance isn't really something you can affect, as it's completely down to the optimisation of thos mods. And most mods / mission are horribly optimised.

Have you tried googling either of these?

  • ARMA 2 FPS GUIDE
  • ARMA 3 FPS GUIDE

They're all essentially the same, but they immensely help. Same applies for DayZ.

Something is wrong on your end I believe.

If you have to ask the question you should wait for full release.

Recent article about cores, not relevant but an interesting read...

I've spent more hours messing around with graphics settings/config files in bis games than I have beating other games. I think you should be able to run the games but you'll probably have to research the best settings for your machine.

I'm running AMD components and after a bit of research and tweaking I get 30-50 fps. Fps will dip if I go into cherno, elektro or zelenogorsk but not by much, I found that turing off shadows and turning down clouds had giving me a bit of a fps boost.

Is AMD a bad company? Personally I have had better luck with them over Intel chips and such, it all boils down to personal preference. Dayz isn't fully optimized yet, things will change. Maybe Im just lucky with the parts I am using but I also added a 4gig video card to my system to try and boost performance. So far Dayz is the only game that has had minimal performance boost from adding that card

This is an very interesting article, thanks.

Some observations:

"The bottleneck beyond four cores is almost always the graphics, not CPU." I would say that this is true, however DayZ is the exception. And, as the article points out, all cores are not created equal.

"If you’re wondering about AMD’s chips, if anything it’s all simply worse. AMD’s cores are weaker than Intel’s and as things stand they’re tough to recommend for anything but a very, very low-budget gaming box." True again ... as an AMD and an Intel owner I can confirm this, without reservation. The old hot rod adage applies here, Speed costs money, how fast can you afford to go?

"... a demo designed to show DX12’s new multi-threading prowess at its very best. And it shows zero benefit beyond four cores." Personally, I would be reluctant to make too many assumptions, as DX12 is still alpha code. However, if DX12 were only able to make use of four cores for my games, that would be dramatically better that where we are now. So, if my game would happily run on four cores I would still have a couple of cores left over for the one hundred, or so Windows processes that run, nearly constantly, in the background. Without a doubt, you are better off with an extra core, or two, if you stream while gaming or would like to game while a video renders in the background.

With all of the settings adjusted to low, or off, DayZ will not make much use of your GPU, instead it will rely on the CPU to do most of the grunt work. This configuration will give you poor FPS and horrible graphics. This is a problem for AMD processors, in particular, and they will not be able to keep up under that load. With a suitable GPU, you can  adjust the quality of the textures, objects and terrain to high, or very high and this will offload some of the work onto the GPU, make the game look better and likely increase your FPS.

Some of the guides do a better job than others, of explaining which settings are CPU intensive and which are GPU intensive. I would suggest that you study them to see where you need to be conservative and where you can be a little more aggressive. Most of them will also make suggestions on how to adjust the draw distance and shadow distance. These are pretty critical adjustments on an AMD box and it will take some time to come up with a compromise that you can live with.

As freethink says, it may take hours of tinkering to come up with a combination that will work for you, because every PC is a little different. If your primary interest is PVP in Cherno, you may still be unhappy with your frame rate, no matter what you do. I tend to hang out in the interior of the map and I usually get between 25-45FPS on my AMD machine. The larger towns, like Severograd are challenging, but I don't spend a lot of time in big towns, so it's not that big of an issue for me. Your mileage may vary.

you can try overclocking your CPU. 3.1 GHZ is too low for DayZ, especially with AMD.
