swords, smithing, furnace, melee and ragnar

Recommended Posts

To chime in again, the idea of creating more weapons is not what I'm against.  I'm against the Warcraft/Minecraft/Skyrim idea that one person with a pickax can just find untapped sources of iron in a developed country.  Most surface deposits of Iron (aside form bogiron which I'm unsure would exist or not in Chenarus) have been tapped out years ago, in a country like Chenarus, that was a member of the Soviet Union, any surface resource of something like Iron would have been gone long ago, there MIGHT be a mine or two that was active before ZDay, but I would think that would be a dangerous undertaking (Zombies in the mines, cave ins, gas buildups, poor air quality, ect ect) and not worth going in there to make a sword.

As suggested before, smelting scrap metal, or reforging items that already exist, might be a better idea.  I just don't think we should go the route of so many other games, where you can make a fully functional AK by pouring molten iron into a mold and waiting 20 seconds.  Now making crude parts/weapons out of scrap metal might be a better deal, IE make some broadheads for arrows, a metal blade (as a knife or other crafting components) or even simple car parts (and I do mean simple)

No. This is realistic, not everybody knows how to throw a weapon accurately or SMITH. It's unpractical too. These posts really annoy me sometimes. It's the 21st century. And why drive players away from military? In real life if you knew there was a military base near by in your town, why would you not go? What idiot makes poor quality makeshift non effective items? Who would just stick with melee in such a gun driven community? smh at some of these posts, the only thing i agree with on here is to make weapon shock damage higher for knifes.

When the bullets run out (And they will. Everything that goes into a modern smokeless-powder cartridge (brass, primer, smokeless powder, bullet, etc) essentially requires a global trade network. Sure, you could use blackpowder, but that would only work with certain cartridge calibers, and primers would still be a problem), you are gonna want something that is effective. Arrows with metal or glass heads are effective. Spears made from springsteel are effective.

All of the above (with the exception of the actual musket, but smiths did forge out musket barrels on an anvil. But they knew what they were doing) requires little more than a metal-working file and some time. Hell, you could make a reasonable musket with a length of reinforced metal pipe and a hot wire.

I am planning on buying a blackpowder smoothbore muzzleloader (because I can make everything I need to shoot it at home, from powder to lead shot), but I still have a bow (that I made), as well as a spear (that I also made)

Remember, this is the 21st Century, but in the case when you can't run down to the corner store to pick up more bullets (AKA Day Z. I would love it if the spawn-rate for ammunition of all kinds was severely cut back, or even stopped, just to see what would happen), you kind of want to have something for backup. Either a bayonet on your rifle, or a spear/bow/whatever-have-you that can kill things dead.

"Be Prepared" is my personal motto.

I, for one, would LOVE to have a skill system, randomized each time you re-spawn, but apparently that is heresy to many other forumgoers.

LOVE ;D nah I'm just teasing.

It seems to me that ammo is just common enough. Experimenting with massively reducing it would be interesting but it seems fine as it is for the most part. The problem is that ammo tends to spawn in big clumps. It's not difficult to go into a building and find 20 rounds for your gun at which point you might decide to just skip the rest of the town and go to NWAF or something. It'd be better if ammo spawns were much more common but we only got 1 - 5 rounds at a time. That way it's not difficult to find a little bit of ammo for your gun, but you won't be spraying all over the place since you'll probably only have a few rounds - unless you manage to loot all of Cherno by yourself of course.

Soft skills are incoming. I suppose that means that you'll get better at performing certain tasks over time - and I like that. Randomised skills would be interesting but players suicide just to get a better spawn, they'll absolutely suicide for better skills.

That knife or axe won't let you defend yourself at range, or kill a deer or person 30 yards away.

And i'm fine with like a improvised spear and shit, but some of these things would be too much space on the ol' hard drive.

This is why "just making a bow" is rather aggravating to me. In-game, all you need is a bit of string and a stick, and you have a weapon that could kill a person out to at least 50 meters.

In real life, the "improvised shortbow" would suck massive balls. It wouldn't be able to fire arrows that far, that accurately, or with that much power.

Bowmaking is an exact science, and actually requires some knowledge about physics, the wood involved, and quite a bit of time and work.

It should be changed.
