It's not possible.

If you want one, you'll have to rent it from one of the providers.

Okay- sorry for the noob question but this has been bugging me:

Let's say that there's a private server I go to and it spends more time down than up... who do I contact about that? Are all game files hosted at the server you rent from and if so what inputs on the part of the server "renter" can make the difference between a reliable server and an unreliable one?

So the server I'm looking at is a Vilayer server- it drops for hours at a time (and for the love of god please don't tell me it's the normal reset- we've been through this)... I don't intend to complain but I want to be able to tell SOMEONE that the thing isn't working the way it should. Do I tell devs here? I saw a thread at one point but noticed it was made last year and tapered off...

Waiting for host is not a client error, its because the server you are trying to connect to has crashed. This has been happening alot since the patch before crimbo, i have to restart my server regular otherwise it shows being full for days on end.

The best way to check a server to see if it actully has crashed/froze is to look on gametracker, check the ip/server if players shows as being on the server longer than 4 hours then its deffo frozen up. Ive check a few servers recently just to make sure this aint just happening to mine and ive found many servers full of players showing 14hrs +.

I see here that this guy mentions he has to "restart my server regularly" so does this mean it's on his computer, routed through Vilayer as a "master" server? This is what has caused some of my confusion understanding the relationship between the client, host / renter, provider and BI.

Do I notify Vilayer? Is there some way I can figure out who the renter is- or does that not even matter?

Or do I just walk away and find another server?

I ask this here since the op wasn't aware of the server situation- and though I understand they have to be rented I'm having a hard time understanding how it's actually setup between BI, vilayer (in this case) and the person paying the bills,

Thanks in advance for your patience.

Best bet is to ask around in the game (and die a few times) to find the admin's name, and contact him through Steam.

How renting a game works: It's like any internet account, at bottom line. The game you rent is on a distant server - you are paying to rent that game running on that server. So it's like your own web page, anyone can see it but only you can change it. you don't keep it at home on your PC (sorry, I dont mean to sound dumb ENO75, just trying to make it clear).

From home you call up your account and put in your password stuff, and you see an interface that permits you to change certain things in the game you've rented. Really it works the same as paying a bill on the web or having your own forum or website.. What you see on your screen is just your special connection to a distant server.

Everyone knows what you can and can not do when you log on to your "administrator" account (-"the rules"-). So you can play the game which is on the server like any other player, but you can also - for instance - use your "admin" special status to change the description line, or restart the server (restart the game software in fact), and you can put in the messages that appear when anyone logs in to play, and a couple of other things. You just have "special access" to space on a server, because it's you that pays for it.

So BI do not know who has rented a server from a server provider - the server providers know.

Some admins put their name, or put some contact info in the on-screen messages that come up when a player logs in - for instance the address of the clan website.

Some don't bother, which is why you see lines like "second message of the day" - because the guy renting the game has not filled in all the message lines, and just left the default messages.

I am sure server providers will NOT tell you anything about one of their clients. Also the server providers responses to e-mails are firstly automatic, they only have a few employees (they like to sound like big companies but they are not massive employers, I swear) and they do not spend a lot of time reading e-mails. They will normally have 1 PR person to deal with incoming e-mails that cant be 100% automated, and he'll maybe have other responsibilities too. So it's very unlikely they would pass on a message, except in unusual circumstances.

- so (unless anyone has a better idea) Best bet is to ask around in the game (and die a few times) to find the admin's moniker, and contact him through Steam.

ok sorry for this boring explanation, which Is not technical at all. Hope it gives you the idea of it anyway..

hey - maybe finding the admins name could be a kind of quest? instead of looking for AKs ?

Thanks in advance for your patience.

All DayZ SA hosted servers are provided from specified Game Server Providers (GSP's) this includes Vilayer, Fragnet etc.  One rents the server from the GSP and is given access to run the server on a monthly bill to the GSP.  The server owner may do limited things to the server kick, ban, restart etc but does not have actual files to the server as they are protected asset's which is why only selected GSP's may offer rentals for the server.  In the past and present for Arma games you have been able to run a server off your PC for missions etc aswell as whatever it could handle, this was much easier before gamespy went down.  Now things like port forwarding etc are required to run your own server off your pc for games like Arma 3.  Now seeing that DayZ is protected one can only host a server through a GSP vs on their own machine or a dedicated server.  The individual who rents a server has access to make changes via an Admin Control Panel (ACP) which is provided by the GSP as a perk to hosting a server.  ACP's are accessed through the chosen providers main site via log in and password.  If you enjoy a server and want to stay in contact with the administrator's/owners watch the message of the day (MOTD) for information regarding who is in charge, not all servers admins do this but most do.  It might say things like a main website and or teamspeak to get in contact with the operators of the server.  As for everyother type of hosting i.e. from my own pc this is not available as the files are not open to the public at this point in time.

Hope this helps,

Thanks guys- that is EXTREMELY detailed and VERY helpful in my overall understanding. I never mind having it dumbed down to the lowest common denominator since that's usually where I sit. So thanks to both of you and hopefully that adds some clarity for others who are wondering.
