Is it too late for night time servers?

Recommended Posts

Is it too late to impliment a proper night time?  Day only servers have ruled DayZ since launch, for the most part.  When there was night time servers, and I mean real darkness not this light grey we have now, it was awesome but now due to almost every server being day only for the past 8 months or so will night time even be a point to DayZ?  I fear it will end up like 1pp servers, empty and void of life.

Your thoughts?

It's never too late. DayZ hasn't launched yet, it's still in alpha. It can never be too late in alpha as far as I am concerned. I didn't like the first implementation of night time, and I wasn't a big fan of 1pp when I first started. Now I am glad to see the sun setting and 1pp is my favorite. Players will change as time goes on.

I think when the new renderer is nailed down they will likely be able to create a better look to night time and *hopefully* people will be more willing to stick it out.

I don't mind playing on night servers from time to time but something about it is a little exhausting for lack for a better term. Maybe the lack of color? In general I find the game to be hard on your eyes sometimes in extended play sessions and perhaps the night time only makes it worse. That's just me though.

What are you talking about? I play on a couple 1PP servers that have night enabled and they are not empty.

Can you point me to these mythical lands so I can dance with the fairy folk and unicorns? :p

The way I see it, while we're testing, we need to be able to "see" what's actually going on in the game. I feel that if night time play were a large portion of the DayZ experience, it would put a hamper on development speed both directly & indirectly.

The day time is just far more optimal & playable at the moment in the game's current state. Seems as though now is not the time for development to focus around night play.

Don't get me wrong though, I very much lonngggggggg for the day where the game is focused just as much on night play as it is daytime play. I love the eerie feeling to it (before the light was nerfed), & how it can provide you with both an advantage & disadvantage. Depending on your mission/task at the time of day.

I'm not really concerned that the night time won't receive as much love as day time. I often compare the night aspect to that of ArmA 3's which I think is done really well with the lighting.

Persistence plays a HUGE roll in playing through day/night cycle IMO. I think it's things like this that the devs are prioritizing over the night itself.

My guess is that the devs will show the night time love towards the 2nd half of 2015.

I really hope you are correct but day time is like the current running speed.  People are so accustomed to it that even the slightest tweak is going to send this forum into a frenzy of rage and hate posts.  I have faith in the devs to create the monster they are making but will it cost them a large chunk of the playerbase?  Quite frankly, and this is my opinion, the majority of the current playerbase is playing DayZ for all the wrong reasons not understanding what kind of game it's going to be.

Yes you simply sort by 1PP then look for a server with people on it that is night. Several of them are private servers like http://oldschooldayz.net/index.php which has two servers on a private hive, both 1PP and they both allow for night time.

Well, yes, but all you can do is explain it to them. You are not their parent and don't need to hold their hands.

You don't think explanations have been posted for over a year now?  Heck, even the roadmap shows what they have coming up and it's only going to make the game harder(which is good).  I am not sure what you mean about holding their hands?

Night time removes the visual effects. But you can't really avoid that, its night!

People prefer 3pp and day time.  It is what it is.  I like a server that can run like a four hour cycle.  2.5 hours of day, an hour of dusk, half an hour of night.  Get a nice combination of the different setting.  Enough night to get the effect (and combined with dusk it would be cool) and the daytime to get the full effect of the game.

The original night time servers were pretty bad.  Sit in a dark room with hardly any light and you can see further than what you could on night time servers.  Add the moon and stars to the equation and it makes no sense why it was so dark.  On top of that light sources still currently clip right through walls.  That's something that the new engine is suppose to fix I've heard.  I'd love to play more night time servers once those two issues are ironed out.

That's a pretty negative viewpoint you have there, friend.

I'm not sure how it's negative?  The same posts pop up daily asking about wanting more vehicles so they don't have to run around anymore and I am 100% sure they don't get the fact that this game is not going to play like GTA where you can find vehicles laying around everywhere and freely jump in them and go.  It's been mentioned by the developers, mods and players that this first implementation of vehicles is at it's very basic.  We do not need to fix them yet, which again, they don't realize they will have to do.

Anyway, off topic there.  The original night time was not too dark unless you are playing on a dying monitor from 20 years ago.  You could see perfectly fine in the open when is was pitch black out and it only got completely black in the forests and inside buildings.  Inside the building is where the lack of proper light rendering was hindering the night time experience imo.  Not to mention they had the lighting issues with the flashlight going through walls which I do believe was fixed many months ago.

HAHAHAHA , Please me too.. I have been searching endless for a private 1st/3rdPP that has the good old pitch black night time, even if it's for a few hours. It was so much fun to use the lamps , lights , to get around.. and watching glowsticks running across a field. Every private server i found has the 24hr/DAYLIGHT logo stamp on it .. :(   I wish there were more of them around. Don't be afraid of the dark..

Obviously the new renderer will improve the visuals at night time but I don't think visuals are the reason people aren't playing after dark. However good it looks it will always be harder than daylight and as we know the majority will always go for the easy option.

I think the new zombie ai has the potential to change the night time experience, As they're infected humans not undead they still need to sleep right? Perhaps after dark the they could sleep in heaps inside buildings kind of like the I Am Legend zombies reversed. This would make looting in cities easier at night, assuming of course that they significantly bump up the zombie numbers so they become a major threat. If that idea is too much then giving them reduced sight at night will have the same effect to a lesser extent.

Nighttime makes zero sense to me at the moment, it definetely needs to be setup properly as everyone now can join a nighttime server, pull his gammar up and boom - nightvision -

it just doesnt make sense right now. a player would have to setup his video settings before he joins a server so he cant just pull his gammar up when its getting night...

It will be as in the mod. When I started playing the mod there was plenty of 1PP only servers, but they disappeared so we had to play on 3PP. Serves that doesn't have any playes will be shut down. The vast majority doesn't want nighttime so there is no big suprise they are gone. Get used to daytime  only servers.

Night time is no harder.  That makes no more sense than the 3pp versus 1pp argument that 1pp is harder.  If everyone is playing within the same set of parameters, it is no harder or easier.  What people dislike about night in many cases is that it is boring.  It adds a little ambiance, but nothing in terms of real playability.  It is cool in pieces, but as the main setting on a server, it is terrible.

Concerning Caboose's assertion that people are playing the game for the wrong reasons, wanting limited access to vehicles isn't a wrong reason.  In fact, if it is truly so close to the outbreak that fresh fruit is available, working automobiles wouldn't be all that rare.

It seems like theres a metric ton of public 3pp servers that are night time, it just the private shards and 1pp servers that may have a shortage. The way night is in dayz right now, you can make out were your going with out light almost like its a full moon. When I 1st started playing it was pitch black after while. I agree the lighting effects of fire, cem lights, lamps and flashlights are pretty cool. Fires look so bright, its pretty cool. I started log into night servers on 3pp public a few weeks ago, it almost seems like a different world.

I guess you don't remember finding fresh fruit many months ago was not all that common plus the fact that there is no need for repair whatsoever on the V3S just proves that my assertion is correct and that's what people think the game is going to be like.  Find vehicles everywhere and go vroom.  Their bubbles are really going to be burst in the coming months but the point to this thread isn't about vehicles, it'a about night time and if it's too late for them to fix it.

Having limited visibility is harder, human eyes are designed for the daytime. Obviously its the same for everyone in that specific server but just because everyone has the same handicap doesn't mean its not harder than playing a daytime server. Why would people turn their gamma and brightness up unless its easier when you can see more?

People won't play at nighttime if its pretty, they will play at nighttime if it gives them some kind of advantage.

It isn't really harder though since everyone has limited disability.

Except for those who gamma exploit

I love night.

certainly in the mod it was way more scarey, especially in the early days before people (ok me) knew about the gamma cheat. running like a headless chicken off the beach into forest, the ground is totally black. hearing other people run past you in the dark (are they other new spawns or people killing newspawns? what are the odds they have NVGs ?)... heading for stary sobor to lootup thinking it should be quieter...running with W held down by 9v battery across fields wondering why clouds aren't moving. oh must be a fence there...jump over, ah i'm moving again. my favourite dayz experience was being on server with just 5 ppl on...me+friend and 3 others. it had been quiet for an hour, we were about to log off on hill above starey when I *thought* I saw a blink about 1km south. keep looking that way for another 5 mins...another blink. get out binos...I can see 3 flashlights running around. they are extinguished as they get close to the tents...even though we had the advantage, was heart pounding stuff crawling up close to try and establish if they were heavily armed, what action we would take etc

i personally would like to see the in-game gamma/brightness removed fullstop. If people want to use those controls on their monitor...well there's nothing that can stop that from happening. Make night much darker and viewable distance reduced somewhat. Be great if night vision was established slowly over 1/2hr or so, then ruined if someone uses lamp/fire/shines headlights/flashlight in your eyes.

I share these very same concerns man. The DayZ that we're playing today will not be the DayZ that we're playing January 1st, 2016.

I hope that we do lose that specific chunk of the playerbase. It'll only draw this community into good light.
