Is steam not updating my copy of dayz or are the servers down for maintenance longer than usual?

Sometimes, but today may just be server maintenance.  There has been no update from the dev team that today is anything other than maintenance.

Just simply wondering. Is it always/sometimes/never the case that on wednesday when the stable version gets patched, does it always become what was the previous experimental patch? So for example, will todays update mean stable becomes 0.50. And we know what will be in it because of that? How does it work? Also, does the new experimental get released at the same time? Thanks.

Updates from Exp to Stable only occur when Exp is satisfactory and can be safely integrated.

Not all elements make the new build if deemed unreliable.

Once a month is the target, which may or may not be kept.

Devs will inform beforehand.

OK interesting, So how often do they release the experimental updates? 

Does anything ever pop up on Wednesday stable that was never in Exp? Like a new gun say?

Experimental updates go live whenever they are ready, however it was mostly on mondays lately.

The latest stable patch 0.49124972 never hit Experimental before its release, so yeah it happens, but that was a hotfix that solved server side issues. I don't think new items will be released without testing on Exp before.
