in game sound

Recommended Posts

cant take it anymore.

this sound is so un-reliable. its grinding my gears.

i just spend 2 days murdering people to get the best everything i can find.

only to be taken out by a guy with an axe. trouble is. he made no sound. just ran right up behind me and axed me.

Karma :D

But yeah it is annoying especially when you just die suddenly, I'd like to hear what killed me. My last life or second last life a guy with a sawn off shotgun killed me from 30+ meters away. Was just instant you are dead, no noise.

He could have already shot at me by that point, who knows I only noticed him randomly then tried to escape and thought fuck it, straight line because shotguns can't shoot that fa-...must have been one of they magic shotguns.

Anyway yeah it's really annoying, and why I have no issue with third person you should be able to hear someone on the other side of a wall running around easily, third person makes up for the lack of sound in the game.

Otherwise it's almost like playing the game with a sound blocking helmet on that restricts you vision.

So they've hired the mysterious "sound guy" that supposed to redo "all" the sounds in the game.  We heard about him as a new hire, as he was getting up to speed in the office and then every mention of him and his work has vanished.  It would be great to hear from this guy, hear what his approach to sounds will be, hear what he will tackle first.  Maybe a devblog with nice video of him recording some sounds.

I'd love to hear from the devs about why sounds from across the map are randomly played and what they're doing to fix that.  I agree that sound is huge in a game like this, and it would be great to hear that status of the progress of it at present.

Rant

He probably "snuck up on you" by crawling on his belly. Something that anyboy who was ever in any army or militia knows is anything but quiet. Only in FPS is crawling "silent"

No but I would urge you not to rely on sound so much. If the guy had had a gun and shot at you from 50 meters would you be here complaining?

I do agree, however, that the "ambient" gurgle crunch thud WHAAA? nomnomnom is just IRRITATING as hell when you're trying to be eyes and ears. Especially the ambient footstep..... that one made my heart race waaay too many times.

I always knew who killed me because I've never been killed with a single headshot till now. Always took a body hit first or a salvo of shots. The other times I died falling off stairs or ladders. But a little bit of last second nervous system overload on the way to death would be a way more playable solution than this type of "happily searching the bunk beds in prison building one second, you are dead screen the next second"

This. I think the problem has to be from your side if you can't hear footsteps because that's one of the only things I have never had a problem with.

No, I've examined this with friends ingame and thought about what it's like at a real-life jogging track.  Where people jog in tracksuits, not sprint with 40 pound backpacks.

I have yet to do some real testing, but my first observation is that running is far too silent in the game. In real life, I swear you can hear joggers approaching at more than 100 meters away, depending on the ambient situation and the ground. In DayZ the range is considerably lower. Not to mention that, as I already said in another post, crawling is NOT silent at all in real life. Unless, of course, you crawl at a considerably lower speed, one that would make any motion sensor fail its' task.

The only way to move stealthily is to move slow, preferrably in an upright (standing position), since your feet are your best tool at controlling noise related to movement. Not crouched, not prone, straight up. However, this too is dependent on several factors

- Your own body weight and gear

- The type of footwear (army boots are generally harder to sneak in than track shoes)

- The type of ground (sneaking on forest = tricky, sneaking on pavement = easy, sneaking on gravel = impossible)

I'm a bit confused as to why your lecture was directed at me. Since I only pointed out how it's never been a problem for me to hear footsteps from other players in my original message.

Umm... I'm sorry if you felt... lectured.

I was in fact commenting that footsteps are too silent in the game.

thing was i was inside prison building inside jail cell picking up a stupid can of bacon, i just had to have it you know.

second i turned around i seen him hit me. like 1/4 a second then black screen. was like how the hell did he get in here without making noise on that floor, i am aware than the runway is practically silent. but the door? the hallway? i've ruled out spawning in. because who would log off in the hallway of the prison building? the hallways when im on them they make heaps of noise. no where near as much as the workshop floors that sound like your in a echo chamber.

but yeah. KARMA perhaps? i did kill quiet a few people (with guns)

Ever consider that the guy just legitimately snuck up on you? I can always hear foot steps. I track players based almost exclusively on sound (typically sit in a hot spot with sound cranked).  It hasn't failed me once. This game has pretty loud foot steps, and they're distinct based on what material they're walking on. If you're inside a wood-floor building, for example, it's impossible to NOT hear someone running around somewhere inside.

Let me get this correct. You understand sound is completely jacked up right now. Yet you continue to rely on it and are surprised that its jacked?

Try visual recon.

door? floor? from what i seen im guessing was he seen me outside, ran straight in full tit axe a swinging.

if he was sneaking how'd he open door with no sound? taking ages to sneak up on me? i was moving a lot like i always do.

i have a funny feeling he will come in here and read this thread.

Hell of a lot of people. All kinds of stupid fits into that couple of million that forms the playerbase.

blah blah blah

no instead i just hear random zombie sounds. random reload sounds. random drinking sounds. random reloading sounds. random tape sounds.

but when u need it most.

STEALTH TO UNGEARED PLAYERS WITH AN AXE who can take on a fully geared player because i relied on SOUND.

more blah blah blah

actually when I start hearing those random sounds, that's when I realise another player is nearby.

my dayz buddy came up with the theory that it only happens when you are near someone else (maybe several hundred meters, we should test it more thoroughly)..and I tend to agree.

we always hear the random sounds when we run around together (and there's other players on), only sometimes if I am playing alone (likely to be when I cross paths with other players in the popular areas), and never if I am messing about alone in the sticks somewhere.

have been having to play Dayz this last wee while using AC97 motherboard sound codec and it is a truly frigging awful experience - not even hearing a gun fired less than 10m away from me, what the fuck is that all about? never mind footsteps.

Recently I saw a thread "I took out a fully geared guy with only an axe".

The sounds ARE completely f***ed up. Especially the random ones with no real source (door creak in the wilderness, opening a coke, zombies although none is nearby).

someone told me that recently too. must spread like wildfire, (news). the ammo shuffle is someone shuffling ammo within 1km of you. <--- this hold true?

maybe same for zombie sounds? player agro within 1km? drinking/eating? same? nah?

yesterday i fired the longhorn and my buddy could only hear it when in front of me. he stood 10 m behind me and did not here anything when i shot.

i hope that not only do the bugs get fixed (whenever it makes sense) but i want some more ambient sound.

it is atumn. we have deers. sooo... ; )

some of the gunshots sounds are so terrible.

reminds me of my childhood when we used toy guns with the red stripes as ammo. "knallplaettchen" in german. did not find an english word for it.

*I* believe the source of the sounds could be from anyone anywhere on the map. It's the fact that someone (anyone) is near you, triggers the game to realise it must broadcast some player sounds to you, but they (devs) have not gotten around to filtering whose sounds to forward to you yet. i.e. you simply get everyones.

e.g. my friend has been at Berezino, I am at zelenogorsk. I say I hear someone eating/rounds combining to him on teamspeak, he instantly comes back saying it was him. shortly after I find another player in zelenogorsk...

whether this is really what's going on under the covers...who knows, but seems to match my experiences

Yes. It causes tinitus if you play DayZ too long. In my opinion what we have now can only be a cheap placeholder for some real ambient sound
