Dev Stream 13/09/2014 Discussion

Recommended Posts

Since this is supposed to be a weekly stream, why not put on a topic where we can discuss stuff adressed in the stream.

Link to the stream: http://www.twitch.tv/dayz/b/568207539

THIS SUMMARY ISNT COMPLETE YET!

Some points that have been adressed:

Dynamic Loot spawn

The devs are working on a general dynamic loot and event spawn system ( already utilized by the chopper crash sites ) to make loot spawn at randomly generated places on server init and during server lifetime to make looting more dynamic, as opposed to "Item X spawns at location Y". Things like that should in the end be controllable by server owners. The information about loot spawning also will be a part of the loading screen, so mislieading server names ( "high loot, 1 h restart, much military" )  will be revealed.

Renderer replacement

"Our target is to make it start to pay off in Q1 2015". However, this is a long term goal, and still a long way to go, since its a very major improvement to the engine. Watch the status reports for updates.

Sound bugs / random sounds / lag issues

The devs are aware of the problem and found ways to reproduce those bugs. Most of them are related to server-side performance. That is why you encounter less random sounds / gunshots missing on a relatively fresh server or on low player count. Server side optimiziation is one of the next goals ( and will eventually come with a higher player cap, steadily increased in small portions, with 100-player-servers as the goal, no ETA tho. ) Also, lag issues in firefights are connected with that, like when you shoot a player, the server doenst register that, player kills you and eventually dies to your shot from 3 seconds ago -> messed up priorities under load.

VR / Oculus Rift support

Not before 1.0, initial release of the game.

Expanded Character customization "Sims style"

Hicks isnt sure if that is possible with the current engine. Might be adressed after 1.0.

Seasons

Different seasons throughout the year are definitely upon the teams wishlist. However, its not within the scope of the final release, but - again depending on the engine - something they could add after the inital final release.

Items/Guns

Items and guns need a lot more work than just the model. Expect more weapons to be added during beta, since they are no game changing content.

Compagnion pets

Horses and dogs and such have been discussed internally, but are not in development yet. Don't expect it during alpha.

New Zombie looks and animations

WIP and currently implemented, current experimental build has already got some new zombie animations.

Barricading / base building

Hicks: We don't really have plans to support building a two-story house in the forests. He emphasizes the difference between barricading existing structures and improvised base-building that would fit into a post-apocalyptic world. However, Hicks speaks about every method to store things ( like locking a door ) will bring a counter-measure with it, such as lock picking, so some sort of balance is provided.

Minor stuff:

- dynamic events should not happen in some players network bubble.

- LMG's might be added later, but rather likely to spawn on dynamic loot spawns hive-wide to provide scarcity and a reason to search for that very one item ( same for the possible SVD and rare weapon attachements )

DISCLAIMER:

4AM here now, and i am at 01.07.40 into the stream, feel free to add what has been adressed too, but i really need to go to bed now.

Thanks for the notes. I'd love some rare badass LMG's with even more rare attachments. Give me a reason to scour for loot (and not just one reason).

I'm not surprised the plans for base-building and barricading aren't very ambitious, I think it's clearly a long ways off - zombies don't even recognize walls or floors yet! :P

Excited for the new renderer. Should look way better and provide better optimization - can't lose.

Hmm if thats true im wondering if we will get a better array of sniper guns once the SVD pops up? Even some more high tech guns of war and grenade launchers.

By high tech i mean more modernized guns with thermal and stuff like that.

Good stuff there, but doesn't sound like they were very enthusiastic about a new pistol holster.

If you are watching this, its probably better to just listen like a podcast and not watch... He doesn't really do anything eventful / worth watching.

Glad Septic remembered to ask Hicks about the mud and face painting conversations we had. I think it would be pretty cool to walk down to a pond and use mud to add camo or war paint, like in the Predator and Commando movies heh. M1NDR also suggested we could use cow patties if you're in the wide open fields lol. Maybe even use ash from a fire pit. Just something to help add to the character customization so everyone's face doesn't look the same.

After seeing Hicks kill himself intentionally several times just to get a better spawn, i felt it was fitting to ask about suicide and how we haven't heard anything since the first trailer. Hicks said it has been discussed and it's more than likely going to happen but it's just not priority right now which is certainly understandable, I just wanted to hear from him on it. I believe he said its probably something we would see in Beta. He also mentioned we would need a gun to commit suicide which I don't really fully agree with. IMO we should be able to do it with any sharp or blunt melee weapon like an axe, hammer, screw driver, knife, etc. I understand why he would want to limit it to firearms as you would need to do an animation for each weapon but it would be nice if they didn't make it just about a gun.

The animations actually exist for sharp 1h objects already.  Also pooping, but I think they've scrapped that idea.

I didn't find the stream very informative.  Little tidbits that have been covered but nothing terribly interesting.

Nice! Never seen that video and damn pooping really was in the game files! :D

I wouldn't look for these streams to be the leading edge for new additions or plans for the game. They will use the status report for that since it's a more formal means of media than a livestream. This is just another way to keep everyone up to date and be more engaged with the community. I just wished the maturity was a little better in the twitch chat but it's expected. Glad the mods jumped in quick with the ASCII dick bombing :|

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong I think the streams are a good thing and a nice addition.  I just didn't find any of the questions/answers particularly interesting this time around.

And yeah, some one posted that video on the forum not too long ago.  Besides the pistol suicide from the official trailer, I hadn't seen the other animations before either.  Kinda interesting!  Hopefully we can suicide with a screwdriver at some point =P
