How is games like Planetside 2 able to have thousands of players at the same time?

Recommended Posts

I never understood exactly why the Arma engines run poorly quite often, even on great PC's. Especially in towns and inside buildings, i have yet to find out what it is. One minute i have what looks like 50-60 fps, and then next it gets reduced to 5-10, just looking in a certain direction, and not necessarily at a huge drawdistance/large town etc. I even tried high fps cfg's, with all settings on the lowest. Helps a little, but not as much as you would want.

I mean even Arma 2 doesn't run great. Modern PC's should absolutely kill that game, but they don't. I tried playing DayZ Overpoch. My god, being in any sort of town reduces my game to a slideshow.

Anyone got any tips and tricks to getting this game to run better while inside towns? I tried messing with configs and settings. Maybe someone knows something i dont? My specs aren't great, but this was a high end rig in 2010. Should be OK to run this game, and i am for the most part. But getting into firefights in towns is just not viable for me, comming from games like CS 1.6 where you roll with 100 fps at all times.

My specs:

i7 950 @ 3.0 ghz

EVGA GTX 580 SC 1,5 GB

12 GB RAM

Would running the game from my SSD i have for windows help anything? I know it just makes things load faster, and doesnt really affect performance, but maybe it could help with something other than loadtimes.

Funny you should mention Frames Per Second, because I was watching a video from TotalBiscuit on Dead Rising 3 and how many games are now capping their FPS to a max of 30.

As to CS verses ARMA, these are 2 totally different games with a whole different game architecture, CS being a "twitch 1st Person Shooter" and ARMA being a simulation/shooter,  that said.

I don't think anyone who has played CS has looked at the sun shining through the clouds and said "that looks pwetty", because it isn't and you would get your brain popped.

So everything in CS is optimized to enable a better FPS and therefore uses low poly models and low resolution textures and emphasizing more towards bringing a higher performance than a pretty game like ARMA and DayZ that is able to engulf you into a more realistic looking environment.

Back to your problem, there are several videos out there on YT that offer solutions on how to improve your FPS in DayZ and then we are expecting then game will improve FPS during further development.

snip

The ssd wont gain you any FPS (well unless there is fault in you hdd and its so slow its bottlenecking the game as its constantly loading from you hdd ) it will just help with load times and it will also with pop in textures as it will load them much faster as you move around. If you suffer stutters where the fps is constant but you get tiny little pauses in game even though fps is high enough it should be smooth an ssd will help with this.

Have you tried lowering scene complexity right down in your cfg ( it will make the game a bit uglier )?

Your not going to like my last answer and thats overclock your cpu the problem with the games performance client side is its very cpu demanding and not well multithreaded ( when i ever i monitor it it really only uses 1 core with jumps here and there onto a second core. So it may sound crazy but a guy using that new pentium dual core which overclocks like a madman will get a smoother run than you will with your quad core with a pretty slow clock..

Or wait for them to optimize the game it is still alpha and from there talk of changing renderer etc it seems like there really going to try go the extra mile to get it running smoother(plus they want it to run on a PS4...

I see, I'm sorry for the missunderstanding - it seemed to me that you meant to call the OP troll and this invoked my reaction :)

The persecution complex is strong in this one...

Hi guys, after playing some of my other games I wondered something. How come games like Planetside 2 can have thousands of players in the same server, while Dayz can only have 40 without serious performance issues? Is it possible to use these optimizations/technology in DayZ, making it so we could have more players, zombies, animals, etc? obviously we would only want like 80-100 players, but could this be used to increase zombie/animal's numbers? Simply wondering. Thanks.

You must be new to SOE.  Just because Planetside 2 can have many players on the servers at once, doesn't mean they're good games or run efficiently with all those players.  SOE is garbage, save yourself the TIME (since yes it will be "free"), and avoid anything SOE puts out.

In an alternate reality I typed those exact words and you quoted me in agreement.
