Katana67 2907 Posted August 25, 2014 If you switch between "ADS" and "hud DOT" while fixed on a location (like say, a point between 2 lines on a door), and you fire at both, you can see theres an obvious difference between the two. Okay well, it's viable at range. That's all I'm trying to say. I use it effectively at ranges up to 200m. Which I shouldn't be able to, in my opinion.
Bororm 1156 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) These are not my videos Here's a guy talking about it/demonstrating I think when he shoots the top of the telephone pole it's pretty representative of what I'm talking about (about 1:50), it's really easy to stay accurate on a "small" target like that, and the range he's firing at while not terribly long, I'd argue is still one where you should prefer to be ADS. Here's a kid talking about how he prefers hip fire.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhap3tsxrjw Edited August 25, 2014 by Bororm

hellcat420 212 Posted August 25, 2014 hip firing should be pretty much worthless outside 20 feet.
Katana67 2907 Posted August 25, 2014 (edited) Did you watch the video I posted of me firing a mosin from the hip at ~100 meters? No. I did see this just now, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kz8zZbMOYYM#t=53 HUD dot, being used in first and third for accurate fire at range (looks like 60-100m). And I just bagged a zombie, cold bore, with the HUD dot from the western treeline at Zelenogorsk at a range that DayZDB is telling me is 189m with an AK-101. And just repeated the same test, in-game, with the AK-101 at 100m out to 200m. Was able to hit whatever I wanted dead on, using the HUD dot. It certainly is slightly off, but not anywhere near to the point where it's significant. Man-sized targets are easy pickings. Bororm 1156 Posted August 26, 2014 AK101 seems especially good for it with the low recoil, when I was using one about a week ago I found myself preferring to aim that way on close range targets (sub 40m or so).
DerrocK (DayZ) 39 Posted August 26, 2014 1: I think there's a time and a place for hip fire in any game2: I think it's too easy to kill stuff from the hip. Even on "Veteran" mode (no crosshair), it's pretty easy, and sometimes even better than using your scope at long range. In ArmA 2, the hip-fire icon was OP as hell, in ArmA 3 it's at least a little bit more vague, but still too precise to be difficult. I didn't bother with ADSing back on the days of DayZ mod if the server was on regular. What for? you can just hipfire a guy's head 300 meters away.

It was one of the major complaints against dmrs/.50 cals, that you were perfectly functional close range as well because of the ease of just hip firing the things. I didn't particularly like dmrs, and didn't use .50 cals often as I couldn't find them regularly but there were a lot of occasions where I was using either a cz550 or m24 and ended up popping guys close up that way. I played on servers without the crosshair, but I got really comfortable with where the point of aim was.
rybec 339 Posted August 26, 2014 Let them blue tack then. The point is hip firing should not be a viable option unless you are firing at point blank range. In real life shooting from the hip is downright useless for anything past 10 feet the same should apply in real life. Red orchestra 2 achieves this by using free aim and I think forcing free aim on everyone + removing the crosshair would fix this.Insurgency does this too. I took five minutes to create a video that shows rifles shooting offcenter of the screen. You'll never be aiming 100% at the center.

Yup exactly forced free aim would improve the gameplay so much making hipfiring impossible past point blank range. Even shots at 5 feet would require aiming. St. Jimmy 1631 Posted August 26, 2014 Take the crosshair out of the game so there's no easy quick reference. It's not really hard to aim from the hip if you align your body well with the weapon or know where it's pointing especially if you do a quick look. But it still should be effective only in close ranges.DayZ's "hip" aim is already almost aimed because the weapon is rested on the shoulder and not just on the hip. You should be able to shoot some 50m shots from that position.
agentneo 337 Posted August 26, 2014 There needs to be a lot more recoil Added!!! I thought this was supposed to be a realistic game until the last couple weeks I have realised how over powered and sh*t the shooting currently is in alpha! For example- AK Or SKS- You Get LESS RECOIL if you walk slowly while in the scope...the sway without walking is HIGHER than when you walk scoped..you can get amazing accuracy by walking not standing still...So glitched....Also, the blind fire (hip fire) Is way too accurate..especially with the dot which should be removed months ago! It needs to have at least 50% more recoil and more random deviation not always on the dot like it is now! There needs to more encouragement to stop, take a knee, and aim, rather than charging around hip fire spraying. Aiming summary for me-Remove the walking bug with Ak/ Sks (makes them more accurate than standing still)Less Sway when scoped in holding breath... even after sitting for ages, far too much sway...Remove the dotAdd 50% more recoil and a much larger deviation spread for hip fire across all guns

The hip-fire reticle was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more useful than half of the weapon's ironsights, and sometimes even scopes. I refused to play DayZMOD on non-veteran servers. generalkayoss 17 Posted August 27, 2014 Hip fire in DayZ is ridiculously overpowered IMO. No recoil, no bullet spread. You're actually more accurate using the dot than aiming down sights.
Bororm 1156 Posted August 27, 2014 I encourage everyone to try it with an ak101 to experience exactly what I'm talking about, you can pretty much full auto the thing without a care in the world, keeping all shots on roughly a man sized area up to a decent distance. tootights (DayZ) 26 Posted August 27, 2014 What are people's thoughts on firing from the "hip" in DayZ (and a lesser extent arma in general)? It's been my experience that it's much easier to spray guns and be even more accurate by not aiming down sights in close range engagements and even some longer ones. This is even more true in third person (do not turn this into a third vs first person debate) I find as in general you can turn/move your character much quicker and control recoil much better. Even in first person however, the difference is clear in recoil control as well as having a much less obstructed view of your target. I notice in other people's videos a lot they fire from the hip. I actually still usually prefer ads(aim down sights), but I generally don't use assault rifles or automatics, when I do I find myself starting out using the sights and then quickly switching over in close range fights. High capacity mags confound this issue as you're able to go full auto for quite some time with little drawback. Obviously there's still a lot of occasions where aiming down sights is preferable, and it provides more accurate fire when shooting more deliberately, but in general I find full auto guns to work best hip firing. This is also something I've noticed in arma in general. Personally I think a new animation should be added for "firing from the hip" with a larger recoil penalty, but I'm curious if people even think it's an issue and what their experience is. I personally feel it makes for dull close quarters engagements that devolve into a too "accurate" spray fest. Do you generally aim down sights or find yourself hip firing? For those who play third person, do you find yourself shooting in third person quite often? It seems that hip fire is use to be more accurate than it is now. I probably shoot from the hip 50% of the time. Its effective, if you can spend a few extra rounds. I find it's most effective when walking, not winded. If i'm shooting from the hip, I'm in third person. Although, I've been using third person a lot less lately because I feel it takes away from the immerse quality of the game and actually makes combat more detached and difficult. I find that even though i can see more of my immediate surroundings, I'm not focused on my field of vision like I would be in first person.
