New graphic renderer - graphics improvements?

Recommended Posts

With the news that Dayz will be having a new graphic renderer to cater for the console release, what do people think that Dayz needs, visually compared to what we have at the moment?

To be honest, I could live with the current state of the visuals, if the performance was sorted out in big towns / cities, it gets very choppy even on my modest rig, however I would hope that the following things get looked at;

  • General performance improvements, particularly in big towns + cities

  • Improvements to landscape textures. Some of the ground and building texture works is very good, however there are some textures which could really use some improvement. The runway texture at the airfield looks pretty bad and low res. Some of the grassy textures again could be improved upon. The distance textures for some of the fields and land, look really low-res. I hope these could be improved.

  • Blood squirts (when shot etc) could do with some improvements.

  • Distance vegetation; The distance at which long vegetation is drawn needs to be increased and locked down. Someone hiding in bushes shouldn’t be penalized because on another person’s screen these aren’t drawn because they have options turned down or because they are too far away to have them drawn yet.

  • Trees; some of the trees could look better. I think the pines look nice, however some of the other trees don’t look all that great, particularly the lighter brown trees. The distance trees look quite poor too (though I read that these are being worked on at the moment?)

It would be interesting to know exactly what level of graphical detail BI think would be “acceptable” for PS4 customers, since graphically, console games tend to look better and have more work put into how they “look”. If PC gamers will also profit from this then great.

lol console games look like crap compared to their pc counterparts.  A newer graphics card will easily beat out any xb1 or ps4. Its much easier to code for pc as well, the hard part will be coding for the ps4 and xb1.

What im wondering is how they will set up the controllers for consoles. I really need a keyboard and mouse for dayz to be playable.

The renderer "swap" was announced way before PS4 release was, so its not news tbh.

The main reason they want to disconnect the renderer from the simulation, and eventually update it, is to control what is being rendered on the screen.

Right now, everything is being rendered, and i mean everything!

The axe 1km away inside a building is being rendered, the chair behind the wall 500m away is being rendered.

This is why performance is bad in towns, it is rendering every little object in the entire city, as soon as you look at it.

That is the main purpose of the diconnection of the renderer :)

Performance and optimisation.

Just had to lower settings to reduce lag in city, while Dayz only uses around 50% of available GPU and CPU power.

I would like to see interiors being a bit more proportional with the player model/zombies. Things like chairs, tables, hospital beds are too small. Hell, even some halls and stairs look like shit. That big new building they made in that huge north city you can notice this very well, imagine if there was a fire in that building and people would have to use the stairs.. it barely fits one person.

The outside looks amazing, really. But the interiors are so bad... It breaks the imersion every time I get inside some building, looks like I'm in a dool house. I'll pay to see how this will look on ps4 lol. Compare to any other game there is nowadays and even older games like Silent Hill 1/2, they had proportional interiors.

I hear you on the interiors, the lack of any lighting doesn't help.

What I would like to see is more obvious signs of a zombie apocalypse. Burning buildings, downed phone lines, tipped over cars / trucks, more blood splattered over stuff and so forth.

Is this still a dx9 engine?

DX11 doesn't like my videocard that much :( Using a GTX 570 SC, and even right now in WoW I have to go back to DX9 for it to not crash and burn every 30 mins.

That said, I am looking forward to the rendering changes so towns aren't so choppy, and hopefully DX11 will be somewhat stable on my card when it is eventually used in DayZ.

Just like to throw this in. i5 2500k 4.5ghz, 8gb ram, and oc'd gtx670. I practically get the same fps in some areas on very high settings and very low settings, going from 60-70 fps down to 40 (even on very low) which doesn't make any sense at all. All "effect" settings are off.

I assume the SA will receive future optimization and performance tweaks,  however getting this performance now with hardly any zombies worries me. I notice when I look into some forests or wooded areas, and some small towns,  my fps just tanks regardless of settings.
