I'm angry at myself

Recommended Posts

It's amazing how I never learn. Being the nice guy who likes to avoid conflict.

I was almost next to the guy who didn't see me, with my weapon drawn. He just ran away, without noticing me, as I watched him run.

Then he stopped, I though, okay I'm just gonna move behind this corner and wait until he runs past me and on his merry way.

15 seconds later I got shot.

I think I need to somehow force myself to think that there are no friendly players in this game and that I should just shoot.

Sorry, had to vent somewhere.

Being friendly is for people who like to hang out on the coast, in Novo/Berenzino.

If they get killed they don't lose anything really, they spawn just 2 minutes away from where they died and if they find other friendlies they have their fun.

A little anger and blame towards yourself is a good first step for betterment.
But don't blame the DayZ culture. Don't blame the game. Don't even blame the person who shot you.

Blame yourself.

You didn't get shot because you were friendly or because someone else was pure evil or some such---You got shot because you exposed yourself.

Becoming a better player in any game you endeavor to play is much more about combating yourself and your own bad habits and exercising and pushing the limits of your reflexes than it is fighting another player or the game itself. You are your own enemy. Break old habits and form new more effective ones. Evolve. Adapt!

I'm not into the friendly playstyle 90% of the time but that 10% where I do behave I have rules of engagement that I follow that might help you. Your own code needs to be personalized to be effective. You will add and subtract from it as you progress and meet with both failure and success.

Never approach or talk to an armed person without watching them for awhile. And if you're geared it usually still isn't worth the risk. Never engage without a way to break line of sight. Don't let people stand to close to you. If you're alone you are the only person you can depend on---you don't have a squad for strength in numbers or even just one buddy for overwatch. You have yourself and your wits. Think about it like driving a car---instead of your eyes moving to constantly check your mirrors instead you are checking that list of details and observations you need to constantly make that keep yourself safe.

Nailed it right there man!!

yesterday was on a town on the outskirts of NEAF, passed a house that heard some munchy munchy, saw a player on a window eating kneeled down,, could have shot him but  started interacting  his voice seemed friendly, asked if i wanted anything, i open my inventory and i saw him raising his gun when on the inventory

had no time to react, he shot me instantly with his mosin, i became cripled on the ground, shot 2 rounds on my blazer when he passed around the house but was already dead in the situation....

indeed, the trick is not exposing yourself!!!

Blame yourself.

truest words ever spoken in gaming.

SO many times I see people rage quit a title because of a change, Or blame thier opponenet for 'dirty' tactics. The best players tho, can take the changes, adapt to them, and find new ways to use the mechanics at hand to thier own advantage.

I'll often get fed up with patches, nerfs, etc and abandon something for a while but normally once a cooler head prevails I try to come back to it and learn again new ways to adapt. That perspective of blaming yourself does wonders for improving your level of skill.

You probably should have tried communicating with him. No response? Terminate with extreme prejudice. Assuming the problem will "just go away" isn't going to make the situation any better.

More stealth, less standing there thinking "will he shoot me?"

If you don't have the upper hand, communication should not be your first priority. You wanna do everything you can to put less control of the situation into the stranger's hands. If you bump into them coming around a corner with no way to immediately put him down, by all means, communicate away as you bolt for cover. But putting yourself into a vulnerable position and gambling on someone's reaction is not a smart move.

Please do not be afraid to play the friendly role if you want to but you will get killed for no reason on occasion B) just like everyone else

we all play a role in this game even if your role is not playing a role. Hero/bandit/medic/psychopath...I have played them all and have fun always

Play the game the way you want to play it.

I used to ALWAYS play the nice guy. Spent a month and maybe 200 hours that way. However, for a week I got into a really bad run where everyone I'd approach or help would end up killing me, or if I was helping someone we'd both get killed while talking or something. Then I spent maybe a month or so playing the lone wolf and not talking to anyone and shooting first and asking questions later (only when there was no way to avoid). However, in the past 2 weeks I've had a lot of good interactions again, and just 2 nights ago I was in western Berezino in the parts up on the hill and I ran into 2-3 decently nice people ranging from a guy just looking for SKS ammo to another guy hiding in a corner who I ended up teaming up with for a bit to loot and look out for each other.

That's the best part about DayZ, you don't know how people are going to react, in a lot of ways it really is like what I'd imagine the apocalypse would be like. Hang in there, there are good non-KOS people out there.

Whoever wrote Blame Yourself, needs reading glasses as the OP already named the title Angry at myself, so he is probably also blaming him self alread.

People like to preach and have them selves heard.

Anyway, OP, I had the same problem. Nothing wrong with you. You think like a normal person and Dayz is not normal apocalypse game. In real apocalypse there wouldnt be KoS. Maybe planned murder but who the hell would KoS.

Ha ha this is exactly how i feel. Most of the times, i see the player, i make sure they see me, i wave. We are both fully geared, surely he wont shoo..... BANG, "you are dead". And i think next time i wont be so friendly, i take one step as a fresh spawn, BANG "you are dead".

Maybe you're right.

but 10 years after the apocalypse as i'm somewhat certain the timeline is supposed to be, I think people would be defending their territories pretty heavily.

See someone you don't know:

threat to

life

food & territories

infection spreading.

+ fear, +animalism +starvation... sadism and psychoses aside, i'd expect it to be very dog eat dog, definitely not utopian as some may expect.
