Benefits and Disadvantages of Carrying Two Long Guns

Recommended Posts

So, I've been carrying 2 primaries for some time now. A Mosin with LRS and before I got my AK101, an SKS. Recently I've been debating on dropping the Mosin due to the fact that Zombies have been becoming more of a threat, therefore I have been weighing the benefits and disadvantages of carrying two primaries.

Pros:

Different Ammo types means if I run low or out of one I have the other to fall back on.

Mosin is superior for long range encounters as the AK101 (or any other semi auto rifle) is better for CQB and can hold its own out to medium range

Versatility

Cons:

Less inventory space as you are carrying two different kinds of ammunition

Have to drop your weapon whenever you have to use something that requires your hands. (Melee'ing a zombie, drinking, eating or applying first aid of some sort)

Players may perceive you as hostile seeing you run around with a weapon out all the time

I guss it comes down to; does the benefits of the two primaries for different situations outweigh the burden of constantly having to drop one on the ground to use anything else...... The big reason that I'm hesitant of dropping my Mosin in b/c I have accumulated so much ammo for it (200+ rounds) as the AK101 i have 4 full magazines plus 40 extra loose rounds (AK 101 is fully kitted too. Pristine PSO scope, pristine rail hand gaurd with pristine flash light and bipod and folding buttstock)

I guess this could all be avoided if the devs put in a (tactical)sling that would enable you to carry a primary on your back as well as hang from the front.

What do you all think?

My idea was to have 2 or maybe 3 slots on the back that can be used however you want. You could have 2 melee weapons, 2 guns, 1 and 1, gun and fishing pole, the possibilities are endless. I know this would make people more willing to carry items such as fishing pole and improvised bow.

If you feel that its getting that bad why dont you try getting a pistol, SMG or even a sawed of shotgun if your worried about running? To be honest any of these options can be a great alternative to your dilemma given. Don't get me wrong i do what you do allot to but there are even more options now in terms of stopping power now. Oh and really the shotgun got a allot better in terms of damage and accuracy it seems.

A: Pistols have a limited capacity compared to a magazine fed rifle.

B: Everytime I carried a pistol it got ruined by 1 hit froma  zombie.... I swear they're made by Fisher Price

C: I'm not a fan of their accuracy at anything past 20 meters......

D: Stopping power is lacking (shotguns and magnums are better, but shotguns accuracy and limited ammo are extremely disadvantageous. Magnums capacity is limited)

A. Iv never had problem with pistol capacity APC ammo is coming back in .48 as well as the NATO rounds so it might be worth looking into for a second time. The APC pistols seem to do the job better than allot of other guns do.

B. This has NEVER happend to me. Maybe because i don't wear holsters and also i store them in pants or other clothing within clothing to protect them. Try it, it works well believe it or not. Iv NEVER NEVER NEVER had a pistol go bad on me just from zombie hits.

D. No they fixed the shotgun its REALLY nice now and also shotgun ammo is massive. You just gotta go to normal houses and you find the buck shots rather easy.

Also im serious the MP5K is GREAT for mass close horde encounters man. You can get ACOG sights on it and stuff to if you can find them. The ammo does expend fast if you only have the 15 rounds magazines but you don't need to use the whole thing to kill an infected with just be calm when placing shots.

Benefits:

With foresight, you can choose the method of an engagement. As it is the Mosin and M4/AKM/AK101 which is the most preferable combo, you have the opportunity to provide overwatch, or lend a hand in CQC.

You feel pretty badass.

Negatives:

You will lose one of the guns when you log off.

You can never run at full speed.

It can take some time to pull out the required weapon if you need to change on the fly.

I prefer to run with a Mosin and MP5/Sawn-off/fully decked FNX.

The MP5 is only worth having if you have 2 30rd clips. The 15's are too unpredictable in whether you'll take an opponent down. The sawn-off is satisfying, but you'll want plenty of cover (like inside a house) so you can duck out and reload constantly, as it's tough to be close enough to get a OHK (with double barrel fire). The FNX will at least give you a chance in a firefight, and is the best all round sidearm, IMO.

This way you have range (Mosin), CQC (with your other weapon), and can still sprint, won't lose your second weapon, and have them all on hotkeys.

I hardly ever use a firearm to down zeds. Always melee them down (which is why i hate having to drop a weapon to pull out my melee). The last FNX I had literally broke in my hands. I pulled it out to shoot a zed and it hit me and it wouldn't fire. Melee'd him down and looked at the pistol in my inventory. Yep, ruined everything on it. Red dot, silencer, flash light... everything ruined with one hit from a zombie while it was in my hands.

Ok this part is not true Both guns stay on your body when you log out you cant just set them down you have to leave it in your hands. When you scroll down your inventory system on the right side the second weapon in your hand WILL still be in your inventory. You just have to equip it back into your main hands again to see it.

I always log out and back in with both guns on me still.

I like to carry the FNX45...but i admit it is my 3rd gun since i carry a Mosin on my back and an AKM in my hands pretty much all of the time.

Ammo space is mitigated by finding an ammo can.

I can switch between the two depending on what position my clan needs me to take, overwatch or door kicker.

The biggest problem to two-guning it is whenever you stop to eat or axe a zombie to death you drop the gun in your hands and the gun may or may not be where it fell to the ground, especially in a house it will often be found out in the front yard somehwere.

Pros:

  • different ammo types make it more likely to find usable ammo
  • you can adapt to more situations
  • you can give one of the weapons to a friend who would be unarmed otherwise
  • you can hold on to a weapon you don't have ammo/equipment for

Cons:

  • different ammo types might cause you to carry more ammo in order to use the advantages
  • lower mobility
  • you have to drop your weapon if you are about to perform a different action
  • you might not actually get to use both weapons in a fight because you don't have time to switch (especially in defensive situations)
  • people might perceive you as more hostile, also a higher chance of getting killed for your weapon

As you can see the last point of "Cons" is pretty reasonable as most of the advantages are only useful in "hostile behavior" while "friendly behavior" makes you feel the downsides to a higher degree. In my opinion if you are not into fighting a lot carrying two main weapons is generally not worth it. As a backup submachine guns, handguns or the sawnoff are probably better choices.

If the devs would add a feature like a gun sling that magic equipment slot on your back would probably disappear making smaller arms much more valuable because of their smaller size - something I would appreciate.

I find carrying two primaries is often more a hinderance than a benefit. You always look hostile and thus look like a loot piñata, you drop it everytime you do anything, and to switch requires many buttons and several precious seconds, making it highly inconvenient within a firefight.

The only time I carry two primaries is when I am holdin on to one for a friend.

On the topic of pistols, I've never had one ruined. Always keep it in the backpack. This goes for any valuable loot; the backpack is the least likely object to get damaged and thus ruined.

Wow, you learn something new everyday! I wondered why Maniac and BlackOut always had an M4 in their videos, lol.

Thanks guys, now I can keep my two favorite guns :D
